Islamic militants threaten Kashmir women with death if they don't quit their jobs

NEW DELHI, India - An Islamic fundamentalist group has threatened to kill Muslim women in a northern Indian state if they don't give up their jobs, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The Harkat-ul Jehad-e-Islami group put up posters warning that Muslim women in Jammu-Kashmir state who do not quit their government jobs by Saturday will be put to death, The Statesman newspaper said.

Posters on the walls of the Shahdara Sharief Mosque in Rajauri also ordered all families to marry off their daughters who are over 15 years old, and directed women not to bathe in rivers and ponds or step outside their homes alone.

Many homes in the region do not have indoor bathrooms, and women traditionally bathe in rivers when they do the laundry.

"Women should bathe at home," the posters said. "Whenever they go out, they should wear veils. They should never travel alone."

Women who do not comply with the orders will be killed, the posters said.

Rajauri is 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu-Kashmir, where more than a dozen Islamic militant groups have fought since December 1989 for the region's independence from mostly Hindu India or its merger with Muslim-dominated Pakistan.

India accuses Pakistan of helping the militants. Pakistan says it supports their cause but denies giving them material aid. More than 61,000 people have died since the insurgency began.

Muslim women in Jammu-Kashmir, India's only Muslim majority state, have traditionally not worn head-to-toe burqas, and higher education for women is common.

Two weeks ago, the Islamic fundamentalist group Al-Badr warned women they had until Jan. 15 to quit police jobs, and said girls and women should not go to school.

Another militant organization, Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Jabbar, had put up posters in the same area two months ago telling women they had to wear burqas.

The militant groups also oppose the sale of liquor in Indian-controlled Kashmir and forced dozens of shops to shut down in 1990.

Militants killed two villagers Monday night in Sumbarh village, 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Jammu, police in the city said.

The militants allegedly raided the village and shot the two after identifying them as members of the Village Defense Committee, a group of volunteers who are given arms by the government to assist the fight against militancy.

No group has claimed responsibility.

This reminds me so strongly of the old Soviet notion of "mir." For public Western consumption, that meant "peace." But in Russian, it means approximately the same thing as Islam: "submission."

Here's one little encouraging 'incident'....

Official sources said a group of three terrorists attacked the house of a former SPO Irfan Ahmed son of Mohd Bashir at village Fazlabad in Surankote tehsil in Poonch district at 2230 hours last night. While two terrorists stood outside the house, another entered inside and fired a volley of shots on Irfan Ahmed killing him on spot.

SPO’s family members including his brother Mohd Rafiq overpowered the terrorist. However, two terrorists waiting outside managed to rescue their colleague. In the scuffle, the family members snatched one AK-47 rifle, five magazines and 17 rounds from the fleeing terrorist.

Security forces and police rushed to the spot early today and started a search operation in the area. According to sources, family of the slain SPO has identified one of the terrorists, who was stated to be a local. Body of the former SPO was buried this afternoon in his native town.

Wow, where are all of those muslim men that so love islam and tell us how well their women are treated here on FreeRepublic? They would not want to live in a truely islamic state because of the lack of freedoms never seeing that their lack of freedoms comes from islam.
