Mayor Michael Bloomberg was roundly booed by relatives of the NYPD’s newest members at their graduation ceremony Tuesday, a week after he promised no police layoffs but said he’d reconsider if the union doesn’t agree to increased productivity.

Crisp rows of more than 2,100 new officers filled the floor of Madison Square Garden as about 10,000 of their friends and relatives applauded, shouted their names and then loudly booed and heckled Bloomberg both times he was introduced.

“Most people cheered. There were a handful of people who weren’t thrilled,” Bloomberg said later. “You can’t worry about that.”

Bloomberg's a fool. He demanded increased productivity from the NYPD and NYFD when the teacher's union agreed to begin covering the school cafeteria again. I wrote a letter to the New York Post at the time this all first came out, but it was never published.

Basically, I blasted him for comparing what a police officer and fireman do in a day, to the job that teachers perform. I pointed out the differences between them: Police officers and firemen already work long hours. They are on call 24-hours a day, have to work various shifts and most holidays. They are required to get involved when they come upon a crime being perpetrated, even if they are off-duty. They can be called into duty at a moment's notice and work most weekends. They are held to a higher standard than are teachers, and don't have the option of having the summer off. I find it ludicrous that this liberal Democrat who pretends to be a Republican, actually thinks that there isn't more that these heroes in uniform can do to earn their salary. When was the last time a teacher was on call 24 hours a day, worked a weekend, a holiday, got stuck working a double shift because of staff shortages? Like I said, Bloomberg is a jerk, and those people who booed him should get a medal in my mind's eye.

"Increased productivity" = more tickets and fines.

This is evidence of what most metro police departments have become: Little more than tax collectors for a corrupt state.

And to think we could've had a REAL Republican convert (by ideas and not by $$) that could've been Mayor, Herman Badillo (and the first NYC Hispanic Mayor to boot).

Bloomberg is a total political idiot. His plans for NYC consist of banning smoking like a Hitlerite, raising massive taxes, and attacking the city police.

Can Guiliani run again? How can one man have put NY back on the S--t list again? Has he done anything good and how about the crime rate, has it gone up?

Is there any way to impeach a sitting mayor of NYC? How did they get rid of Jimmy Walker?

Yes, he can if he wants to. I have a feeling he's going to gun for Upchuck Schumer's Senate seat though.

Remind NYC cops that Republican convention ’04 will be needing to hire many of them for private security work.
