Jordan asked its ally Washington

Ally? Since when?

Or is the state government in Olympia up to something we should know about.

Hm. On the one hand, this might get us in good stead with a non-Jewish middle eastern state, and might even get us on good paper with their citizenry.

OTOH, maybe if they didn't have this, they then couldn't afford to sit the fight out and would have to go on the offensive.

Pardon? An air defence {sic} system?

Is that the much touted French war fighting system where a drone fires a wide area weapon that knocks down fences? Are they they still focused on the Siegfried and Maginot Lines of WWI?

"Jordan asked Washington on Thursday to sell it an air defense system..."

Dear King Abdullah;

Thank you for your kind letter of last (date) and we wish you and Queen Rania all the best in these difficult times.

As to your specific request for the latest air defense system, we appreciate your favorable opinion of American technology, but we must regretfully decline the request at this time.

Our military plans may include brief over flights of Jordanian airspace and we do not wish to encounter air defenses which may be difficult to defeat. Not that we in any way imply that a staunch ally such as Jordan would ever intentionally fire, but sometimes low level troops cannot resist pushing shiny red buttons out of curiosity.

We will keep your letter on file and may revisit the issue at some later date.

Yours in friendship,
G.W. Bush, President (call me B Man)

Kingdom seeks European anti-missile system - officials

AMMAN (AP) - Jordan has turned to Europe for an anti-missile system after
Russian delays on a deal to help the Kingdom defend its airspace in the
event of a US-led war on Iraq, officials said Tuesday.

The Kingdom negotiated with Russia last year to acquire the S-300
surface-to-air missile system. Russia had initially suggested that the
system would be installed in February at the latest, but recently said
delivery was not possible before the end of the year.

Minister of State for Political Affairs and Minister of Information Mohammad
Adwan acknowledged efforts were under way for improved defence capabilities.
"We are reviewing all options to protect our citizens, land and airspace,"
he told the Associated Press.

Other officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Jordan has reached
advanced talks on an anti-missile battery system to be deployed in various
parts of the Kingdom.

They suggested German and Dutch arms firms as likely suppliers, but declined
to provide other details or reveal information on the financial terms of the
deal.

Jordanian airspace was violated in the 1991 Gulf War, when Iraq launched 39
Scud missiles against Israel. None of the Scuds exploded over Jordan.

Wedged between Israel to its west and Iraq to its east, the Kingdom is keen
to secure its air defence before a possible showdown on Baghdad.

The United States and Britain accuse Iraq of hiding weapons of mass
destruction, including chemical and biological warheads, and have threatened
to go to war "to force Iraq to disarm." Iraq has denied the charges.

On Thursday, His Majesty King Abdullah warned that chances to avert a US-led
war on Iraq have "become slim," despite tenacious efforts with unspecified
world countries for a diplomatic solution to the looming crisis.

Jordan has rejected a US offer for upgraded Patriot batteries.

Yoo-hoo, Saddam! Jordan's defences are a little slim right now. Thinking about redrawing your borders? Well then, come on over. Hint hint wink wink.

[That little Hashemite king would just love to fight off Saddam (with a little help from Uncle Sam)... all the way to Baghdad. Can you say "Hashemite Iraq"?]

This is baloney...

Jordan knows we are NOT about to hand them any of our technology, so then they can merely ask the French (who would hand over an A-Bomb as well) without any pangs of "guilt."

No sale.

If they want to allow our troops to go there and install and man some of our systems for their protection, no problem. After all, if Iraq is going to fire at Israel, they pretty much have to fire over Jordan.

But we should not be selling air defense technology to any muslim country. Especially when Jordan recently announced no support for the Iraq war at all.

Why does Jordan need an air defense system? Don't get me wrong...from the beginning, I've been behind King Abdullah's plan to get together a coalition of Arab countries to fight terrorism...but is Jordan telling us that the plan has ultimately failed because some Arab leaders may possibly be just paying LIP SERVICE to the idea...but are really just furthering their personal agendas?

Ask for a quid pro quo over use of their airspace. If they say okay, then the deal should be done.

They are definitely sticking their necks out for us and need protection.

When they want something, we're an ally. When we want something, we're Zionists. If they want more from us than a warm pitcher of spit, we get the right to stage as many troops through Jordan as we want. He's a despot. He can fire on the Arab street like his father did in 1970 if he's concerned about losing his throne.

I dont think we should sell them, we should provide them with the man power and expertise at a cost to them. They should stay under our control. We have supplied too much already to those who have turned on us.
