Why the Peterson story resonates: We can relate

Why the Peterson story resonates: We can relate

BEE STAFF WRITER

Modesto's Laci Peterson has been missing for a month. Through the holidays and now into late January, the case has saddened and captivated Modesto and the nation, perhaps more so because this seemingly happy woman, 27 and expecting her first child, disappeared on Christmas Eve, when the world turns its attention to another birth.

The police search spiraled out from East La Loma Park, where it was believed that Peterson had gone to walk her golden retriever on the morning of Dec. 24.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers searched from the foothills to the Berkeley Marina and from Sacra- mento to Merced. Thousands of people worked out of a volunteer search center for weeks.

More than 3,000 tips have come in. Psychics and other observers far and wide are offering theories. The media is covering every angle, putting a lot of attention on Peterson's husband, Scott, 30, who was the last person to report seeing his wife.

But while the mystery is being debated in public, it is being investigated in private.

Thursday, Police Chief Roy Wasden said leads are being followed, but he would not discuss details. Nor would police spokesman Doug Ridenour.

"We are not doing any interviews about the Peterson case," the detective said. "We are trying to get to the next phase of this investigation."

He would not say what that phase is.

Outside law enforcement officials know what the Modesto Police Department is going through.

"When you have a high-profile case, it's a double-edged sword," said Sgt. Joe Gentile, spokesman for the Police Department in Washington, D.C.

He handled most of the media relations during the search for Chandra Levy, the 24-year-old Modestan who disappeared in the spring of 2001 after completing an internship with the federal Bureau of Prisons.

"You want to get information out on any case, but when it becomes so high profile, you get a lot of calls that have no relevance," he said. "You can't discard any calls because the caller could have some relevant information to the case and not know it."

Going through the tips

In the Levy case, two investigators were assigned to go through the hundreds of tips received

every day from around the country, Gentile said.

Similarly, Ridenour said, Modesto investigators are going through all the tips in the Peterson case, including the hundreds from people claiming to have psychic abilities.

Police are staying as mum about the tips as they are about the investigation.

"There's so much outside

media attention and inspection that it makes their jobs that much more difficult," said Jeanette Sereno, an attorney and an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice at California State University, Stanislaus.

Reporters will dig and try to

report information that could lead the public to believe that someone is innocent or guilty of a crime. If bad information gets out, it can be used as ammunition against the prosecution.

"Any misstep can foul up the investigation and jeopardize prosecution," Sereno said. "It seems they have been prudent and are doing the right thing in keeping information from reporters."

She said the media want police to provide answers so they can tell a story.

"But the police department doesn't find answers; they find evidence," she said. "It's the district attorney's office that provides the answers, and they do that in a court of law."

She said there are no instant answers such as the ones seen on the CBS television shows "CSI" and "CSI: Miami," programs that fictionalize the work of forensic investigators.

In real life, evidence can take weeks, sometimes months to process.

"It's amazing to see them enter fingerprints on these television shows, and they get instant matches on their computer screens," Sereno said. "But across the nation, there are different standards for fingerprints, from the number of points used for a match to how they are stored."

In other words, the public needs to be patient.

Statistics on missing people

State Department of Justice statistics from 2001 show that more than half of the adults reported missing in California returned on their own.

The state tallied 32,742 missing person reports that year, and accounted for the majority as follows: 19,004 (58 percent) came back and law enforcement located 8,768 (27 percent).

Officials said 1,376 people (4 percent) had left voluntarily, and 283 were found dead (less than 1 percent).

Chief Wasden has said that as time passes, usually between 72 and 96 hours into a search, "you switch from looking for an injured, live person. For much of our search, when we're looking in places underwater, we're looking for a body."

Did you see Greta's interview of the National Enquirer reporter last night? He claimed that the police have identified other girl friends of Scott Peterson, one of which may be a close friend of Laci's. He also brought up questions about the Peterson's finances and mentioned a $25,000 golf club membership. Although a home, a couple of vehicles, and a boat are reasonable items, the membership fee sounds a bit steep for a fertilizer salesman.

Rocha Family Breaks Silence

Rocha Family Breaks Silence

POSTED: 8:25 a.m. PST January 23, 2003
UPDATED: 11:32 a.m. PST January 23, 2003

The family of Laci Peterson broke their week-long silence Wednesday night, talking about the missing woman's case for the first time publicly since a series of stunning revelations came to light.

Laci's relatives had been interviewed by America's Most Wanted -- for an episode to be aired this week -- before it was revealed to them that her husband, Scott, was having an affair and had taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy out on her.

Since that meeting with investigators a week ago, a deep rift has developed between the families involved in the case. The Rocha family -- Laci's relatives -- asked to have their segment re-shot, which it was on Wednesday.

While they did not talk with reporters as they left the interview, one family member has broken her silence.

Kathy Rocha said the family felt betrayed when they were told about Scott's actions.

"I think our whole side of the family would like to talk to Scott," Rocha said. "We have a lot of questions--I think we just hung our head (when told about what was uncovered) and it just kind felt like a stab in the back. We don't have good feelings right now and we hope something proves us wrong."

Scott Peterson has repeatedly denied the police allegations.

At the same time when the Rocha were meeting with America's Most Wanted, Peterson's family was meeting in San Diego -- the city where Scott grew up. They were reportedly planning out strategy for a one-day search effort in the Southern California city for this weekend.

Meanwhile, Modesto police said they know who broke into the Peterson house over the weekend. They have refused to identify the suspect and no charges have been filed. The items taken have been returned.

It's been a little more than four weeks since Laci disappeared from her Modesto home on Christmas Eve day. At the time, Scott Peterson has told authorities he was on a day fishing trip to the Berkeley Marina in the Bay Area.

When he arrived home, his wife -- who was more than eight months pregnant -- had vanished.

While Peterson was traveling to the southland, work continued at a state crime lab near Modesto.

John Yoshida, a member of the crime lab staff, told KTVU Wednesday that "a lot of evidence" had already been processed in the case and returned to the Modesto police.

"We have processed a lot of things," he said. "And as the case changes, we change our priorities. We continue to get evidence in all the time."

Yoshida said the latest advances in forensic medicine have changed the way cases like Laci Peterson's are handled by police.

There is a video clip of the family with update from Thursday with Ted Rowlands.

This may have been posted yesterday.. sorry..

If they were registered voters, I'll bet a search of the county voting records will reveal them to be Democrats.

From Rusty's post:

National Enquirer is reporting in their new issue, dated Feb 4th:
National Enquirer Feb. 4, 2003 Highlights by John South

1. Police are investagating reports of a bizarre secret life of reckless spending and multiple girlfriends, including one of his wife's best friends.

2. A source close to the case has dropped a new bombshell, Scott has been calling the girlfriend since Laci's disappearence telling her he was in Europe. She is described as a tall blonde in her late twenties.( no pictures)

3.The girlfriend was so angry with Scott that she agreed to tape Scott's phone calls.

4. Laci's father Dennis Rocha was the only family member to suspect Scott from the beginning. Telling a friend "I know in my heart he had something to do with my daughter's disappearence." Laci's dad never trusted Scott and thought he was a skirt chaser.

5. Two years ago the couple filed for Bankruptcy. Since then they have run up new bills as high as $100,000, including a $25,000 membership Scott bought at the town's most exclusive golf club.

6. Laci was convicted of felony assult as a juvenile. Laci, coldcocked another girl in a fight over a boy. The girl needed medical attention.

7. After cops briefed Laci's family last week about the girlfriend, Laci's familly turned against Scott, he was shocked that they told him to leave the volunteer center. Scott thought they would continue to support him.

My heavens, y'all are on top of things around here! No, I don't have anything to add to Rusty's extensive list. I do have a thought about the recent break in at the Peterson home. It could have been the friend of Laci's with whom Scott is purported to have had an affair. Maybe she was trying to cover a detail or item that would suggest they had a relationship. If her identity had been discovered by police, she may have confessed the affair to LEO.

Thanks for the ping.

I've been thinking that Scott KNEW Laci was dead by simply reading his note he put up at the Search Center.

He's not telepathic, is he? LOL.

I find it odd that the police won't release the name of the burglar. Someone might be able to link the burglar to Laci or it might jog someone's memory.

Although Scott is supposed to have several girlfriends, no names have been presented. His father maintained yesterday on TV that it's all lies. However, I have yet to hear Scott deny this -- as any innocent person would.

On Cnn this morning with Paula Zahn, Brad Salzman, the guy who heads up the volunteer center had some not nice things to say about Scott. He said after the volunteer effort closed last weekend in LA, Scott Peterson packed his things in his car and left. Not a word to Brad, not a thank you, not anything. Brad said he worked hard on the efforts and now it makes him wonder as to the motives of Scott setting up the one day search effort. He feels Scott just wanted to make a show for the cameras.

No, it's just that he has such a close bond, emotionally speaking, he got this "feeling" that his beloved wife was dead.

My opinion it was someone in Laci's family trying to retrieve some valuable. Probably was afraid Scott would sell whatever it was. Or possibly they were searching for Laci's wedding and engagement ring....

I'm assuming that right after the "dissapearance" he called and told gf he was in Europe. When she saw him on TV, she bought a clue.
