Man Fatally Shot While Beating Dog With Shotgun
Police: Weapon Must Have Discharged As Man Beat His Shar-Pei

WINCHESTER, Va. -- A man was shot fatally while trying to beat his dog to death with a shotgun, Winchester police said.

Police say the man called his wife at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill it.

Police say the wife Raymond Poore Jr. found him covered with dog bites and suffering from a shotgun wound to his abdomen. He died later at Winchester Medical Center.

Police say the shotgun must have gone off while Poore was using it to beat the 30-pound Shar-Pei. The stock of the weapon was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.

A Winchester animal control officer took custody of the dog. There's no word on how badly it was injured.

This is what our friend's cat looks like. Yes, Maine Coons are large- - this one weighs about 17 pounds. Every ounce is a delight!

I don't know anything about Manx cats except for their lack of a tail. Yours sounds adorable.

I really hate to say that a certain breed of dog is just 'born bad', but those Shar-Peis are the meanest damned dogs in the world.

I had a girlfriend who owned one, and though she swore the dog loved me it would make grumbling sounds like a demon from Hell if I dared to get up and go to the kitchen for a drink of water. You couldn't even pick up your own property around it without that dog thinking you were stealing. Take off your shoes and put them on the floor, and they become the dog's property forever. You wouldn't dare try to get your shoe back from a Shar-Pei.

When my girl and I would lay on the couch together watching TV, her Shar-Pei insisted on sitting on my chest and licking me in the face with it's big black tongue. If I tried to move away, it would growl in it's demon voice inches from my face until I remained motionless so that it could completely coat my face and head with dog spit. I was always too scared to move. It was like getting your face licked by a great white shark. My girlfriend would just laugh and laugh while I remained completely helpless.

"Oohh, look. He LOVES you!"

They're twice the size of Pit Bulls. Completely fearless dogs. They'd attack Godzilla. They could probably kill any other dog in the world in a fight.

That's why you and the cat get along!

I found that cats can be very friendly and always in your face or just the opposite- - - aloof. Your folks' cat seems like a combination of both.

... Which leads me to believe that dog grabbed the shotgun away from it's owner and aimed in.

That was no accident on behalf of the deceased owner.

I'm sure no time is a good time to die, but if the dog bit you once, you make the call to your wife (Why??? for validation?), then decide to beat the dog first, then accidentally shoot yourself ( still LOL about this ), I imagine he got all those bites AFTER he hit the ground. "Ohhhhhh I'm bleeding and dog's biting me" he thinks, as he fades into the black.I forwarded this story and I'm STILL LOL at some peoples lack of common sense.

It might be the height of stupidity to use a loaded gun as a baseball bat, but perhaps his mental acuity was affected because of the attack by a family pet.

He may be the son of someone I knew from a technical discussion list. If so, his father of the same name, worked at Las Alamos and was a real decent person. He had two sons, who would be about the age of this man, who lived back east, and he and his wife would visit them often.

When they passed through Atlanta, we would have lunch. My friend died two years ago, and I don't know how to contact his widow to see if this was their son.

Stupid action, stupid accident, but what a loss for some family.

That is awfully weird, isn't it? I mean, if he hadn't called his wife to explain, it would be very hard to figure out what had happened, wouldn't it?

I wonder if the wife murdered hubby and then cooked up this bizarro story for the police?

told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill it.

Then why didn't he SHOOT THE DOG. Duh. Stupid guy. You have to wonder if there was something else he wanted - to make that dog suffer... which to me is pretty childish.

I don't know that he deserved to be shot - maybe wounded/bitten. But the rest of your observations I agree with. He almost certainly was a sadistic B......

"...found him covered with dog bites and suffering from a shotgun wound..."

I sure hope none of those bites prove to be post-mortem.

(that would be wasted effort....)

…covered with dog bites and suffering from a shotgun wound…
