Man Fatally Shot While Beating Dog With Shotgun
Police: Weapon Must Have Discharged As Man Beat His Shar-Pei

WINCHESTER, Va. -- A man was shot fatally while trying to beat his dog to death with a shotgun, Winchester police said.

Police say the man called his wife at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill it.

Police say the wife Raymond Poore Jr. found him covered with dog bites and suffering from a shotgun wound to his abdomen. He died later at Winchester Medical Center.

Police say the shotgun must have gone off while Poore was using it to beat the 30-pound Shar-Pei. The stock of the weapon was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.

A Winchester animal control officer took custody of the dog. There's no word on how badly it was injured.

I think I heard Dari Alexander on Fox say before reporting this story… "in a case of cosmic justice", or something like that. I concur.

Reading between the lines, the ex-man probably deserved to be bitten in self-defense to begin with.

The wife came home about 6 p.m. and found her husband unconscious, with a number of dog bites and scratches. She called an ambulance, and emergency medical personnel discovered that Poole had been shot in the abdomen. He was pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center.

She found him in a blood of his own Poole...

Psst. Dtel. You do know what kind of dog that is, don't you? It's a Chinese fighting dog - i.e. a Chinese "pit bull". Don't let anyone know that, or they'll give that jerk a medal for beating the poor thing and trying to kill it.

Because of their face shape, Shar-peis snort a lot. They also snore louder than most humans, but that's another story. Unless you know 'peis, it's easy to think that the dog is just massively hostile when all it's doing is sighing through the rolls and folds on its face. In all likelihood, your girlfriend was right. If the dog didn't like you, he wouldn't have made such a submissive gesture as face licking (which, in doggie-speak, is equivalent to saying, "I'm a helpless puppy, regurgitate food so I can eat").

I've never seen a 'pei that was twice the size of a pitbull personally, but they are much braver than they are smart. They're also weird looking dogs, with weird looks, weird sounds, weird smells, and weird habits. Certainly an acquired taste. We love ours, but he took quite a bit of getting used to at first.
