Rumors leave lives in limbo Experts say Peterson case shows risks of premature judgment.

In the search for a missing Modesto woman, about the only thing police will say publicly is that her disappearance on Christmas Eve is suspicious and they suspect foul play. And her husband isn't a suspect. Yet Scott Peterson, a 30-year-old fertilizer salesman, finds himself immersed in a swirl of suspicion that began soon after the day he said he last saw his pregnant wife, 27-year-old Laci Peterson.

You don't know one thing about this story; take my advice, don't try to politicize this one. You're in WAY over your head on this one.

Buy a clue.

Ok what the heck its Saturday afternoon. I'll buy a clue.
So how again did he make her disappear, what is the reason besides she was having a baby and that would be a pain in his butt what with a girlfriend and all and of course all that insurance money, and of course I want just the facts. Not some made up BS!

He's the most logical suspect and it's unreasonable to assume people would 1) not be interested in such a case, 2) not suspect the husband when he can't produce evidence that eliminates himself as a suspect, or 3) that the 24/7 cable news networks would simply walk away from a story with such interest. Tongues have always wagged as they will, but the chief complaint seems to be #3 - the 24/7 media, which would logically include cable news networks, radio talk formats and internet blog sites like this one, that have also been the source of vexation to the Democrats.
People have the right to be judgmental and to speak about their opinions even if no evidence is produced to charge or convict a defendant. They have the right not to treat OJ as exonerated by the Not Guilty verdict. How exactly would that Declaration of Innocence work in the case of OJ, or of Gary Conduit, or in lesser charges, Torricelli?
Privacy isn't an enumerated right, although decent people will grant it within reasonable bounds, all the while wanting to hear further details on mentally tagged stories.
BTW, anyone hear anything about what kind of Christmas presents he bought for her?

There are people who have been following this case from the very beginning; they actually know what they are talking about.

Nobody is going to take the time to catch you up.

Richard Jewell

Yeah, the reasoning behind the "case" against him always escaped me.

And you chose to repeat rumors here and blame Laci for her probable murder? And your relation to sweet calm Scott is.........???????????

That's what I heard broadcast on the radio from people who claimed to have grown up with her. They certainly seemed to know about her (schools attended, classes they'd taken together, where she lived, friends they'd had in common, trips they'd taken, etc.) Do you have information to the contrary?

The reason it was brought up in the first place is bacause the host of the show didn't understand why her family seemed so protective of Scott at the time. The callers explained why her family liked him so much. I suppose they could have been making things up, but they certainly sounded believable.

I find it interesting that every other bit of information has dribbled out, but this little piece seems to get overlooked. It's either an accurate description or it is not - shouldn't be too hard to verify either way. It could also help explain what happened - assuming you actually want to find out what happened.

I also find it interesting that if someone from her past killed her (other than Scott), that somehow constitutes blaming Laci for her probable murder.

Oh, I have no relation to sweet calm Scott.

I wonder if she had any druggie ex-boyfriends that were released from prison recently, or something along those lines.

I know she had a lieing, cheating husband that was still making phone calls to his gf after his wife and baby went missing, acting like nothing was wrong. Told her he was going to spend Christmas with his family in Mass. and then go to Europe. He let his family, including his very sick mother defend him to the world while he makes calls to his girlfriend/s.

Ever since the McMartin case out here in L.A. 18 years ago, I've been very, very reluctant to jump on one of these media-driven bandwagons.

For those who may not remember, the McMartins ran a day-care center in Manhattan Beach, CA. (within 3 or 4 miles from my home). They were accused of heinous acts of child abuse. The tales many of the kids told were lurid, wild and sordid. Mrs. Peggy McMartin Buckey and her son were charged. Raymond, who spent five years in jail before raising bail, and his mother, who spent nearly two years in jail and lost the family-owned school in Manhattan Beach, were eventually ACQUITTED after a 30-MONTH trial.

The verdict represented something of an embarrassment not only for the prosecution but also for some in the news media, particularly KABC-TV, which first reported the accusations, "20 / 20," the ABC News program, as well as the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers that gave full credibility to the police in trumpeting the charges in 1984.

The KABC reporter who first disclosed the McMartin accusations, Wayne Satz, later entered into a romantic relationship with Kee MacFarlane, the social worker at the Children's Institute International. MacFarlane interviewed scores of the children and elicited the charges of child molesting from them, Satz said management and ABC counsel were aware of his relationship with MacFarlane and "saw no impropriety." The prosecuting attorney and the LA Times reporter covering the case later got engaged. But all denied any conflict of interest. (But they expect the public to never forget that we are always supposed to swallow whatever the media feeds us without question. Yeah, right.)

In the end, it was proven that the social workers and child psychologists essentially told the kids what to say. There never was any abuse at that school.

CONSERVATIVES, IN PARTICULAR, SHOULD NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THIS FACT: Government and the media are allies — very often against the people whose interests they are supposed to serve. Their combined power can ruin anyone, anytime, under any circumstances, no matter how innocent the individual might be. They can ruin you, me, anyone. Instead of jumping on these bandwagons, we Conservatives, of all people, should be demanding that police departments do their jobs in developing solid evidence in these cases.

You'll have something to add when Ann Coulter writes a column about it and then you'll know what you think.

ok so you don't want to play!

Parting thought and its my own opinion if he did it this is how she died.
.......
When anhydrous ammonia — legally used as a fertilizer — hits the skin, it inflicts a painful, freezing burn.

A third of Riffell’s body was burned. The moisture-eating gas burned his throat, lungs and eyes. The burns on his left arm and back were the most severe, said his doctor, Dr. Kenneth Larson of the St. John’s Burn Unit. They penetrated all the way through his skin.

Agree the media can be excessive, plainly wrong, and politically motivated and wreak dire personal consequences on the target, but conservatives and libertarians should also be wary that the same political influence might be at work in a "Declaration of Innocence". Who and how would the criteria be constructed to determine that a suspect who is not charged or not convicted is judged to be innocent? Sometimes all we know is that the empirical evidence did not overwhelmingly support the charge or the conviction, not that the suspect was actually innocent.

PS to my #30:

There is no doubt in my mind that OJ Simpson is guilty of double murder, because the evidence was overwhelming even though a racist jury in the criminal case decided to give him a pass. He was, however, found liable in the civil trial.

Although I suspect that one of the two adults in the house the night JonBenet Ramsey died killed her, I am open to other possibilities. We have seen in a number of subsequent cases that strangers will come into a house with adults present and steal a child.

I suspect that Chandra Levy was killed by the same man who attacked at least two other women in that park. Condit, for all his faults, did nothing illegal insofar as the known evidence shows. He didn't even do anything as bad as Bill Clinton did, because Chandra did not work in Condit's office. The known evidence clearly shows that they were both consenting adults, and that Chandra knew he was married, but entered into a relationship with him anyway.

In the Peterson case, it is certainly reasonable to suspect Scott. But until the police can come up with enough evidence to charge him, the possibility remains open that he was not involved in whatever happened to his wife.
