MOSELEY-BRAUN: Presidents' Day Plans

Ex-Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) accepted invitations 1/28 to speak in Des Moines 2/15, NH 2/16 and SC 2/17 at events sponsored by American Women Presidents.

In an interview, Moseley-Braun said: "If I were to do this, it would make sense for me to come to Iowa. To talk about issues is what I like best. That's what motivates me about the whole set of challenges that a national campaign would represent. I just hope down the road we'll have a chance to discuss them in greater detail."

IA Dems "said they would welcome Moseley-Braun" to the field. But "some admit they know little" about her. IA state Rep. Deborah Perry (D): "I think as a woman I would encourage Moseley-Braun to run."

Last week Moseley-Braun discussed a potential bid with Dem organizer Pete D'Alessandro, who managed ex-Sen. Bill Bradley's (D) '00 caucus bid. D'Alessandro "said the ethics questions would get little reaction" outside of IL. D'Alessandro: "When I ask people what they know about it, no one has any specifics." Des Moines Dem activist John Campbell "said he would consider her equal to all other candidates" but added: "I don't think America's ready for a black woman president" (Beaumont, Des Moines Register, 1/29).

American Women Presidents pres. Mosemarie Boyd: "We are very excited that Ambassador Carol Moseley-Braun is looking at running for U.S. president in 2004 and will attend our upcoming Presidents' Day events. ... We're working with state political party officials as well as others in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and around the nation to host events in all three states. .. We hope you can join us" (release, 1/28).

Also from HOTLINE:

SHARPTON: Four Ways To Look At This Candidacy

Providence Journal's Terzian writes on the "four ways of looking at" Rev. Al Sharpton's WH bid.

The first "is to observe that" parties "deserve the candidates they get." No one "has played the race card as shrewdly and successfully" as Sharpton, and today's Dem Party "is his natural home."

The second way of looking at it: "Sharpton might well attract significant numbers of black Democrats in certain crucial" primaries. A man "who has never held public office" could well "be transformed into the most powerful black Democrat in America."

The third way: "With his jump suits, medallions, bigoted pronouncements, flowing John C. Calhoun locks and historic attachment to the Tawana Brawley hoax, Republicans could not seek a more suitable opponent than the Reverend Sharpton."

More Terzian: "Nor, for that matter, could journalists ask for more. ... A lot of circus comes with the bread, and presidential politics can be awfully entertaining. That's the fourth way to look at his candidacy" (1/29).

Note to all:

It's not "President's (or Presidents') Day."

The Federal holiday is still officially George Washington's Birthday.

First Al and now Carol, is it possible to actually feel SORRY for our esteemed opposition party? What I really want is the Tylenol concession at DNC HQ!

This could be bad news. Funny, but still bad. She might actually drain votes from Sharpton and cut down his number of delegates - and her own. No, we have to pray that she stays out and that black Dems unite behind one strong black candidate (Sharpton) who can, in turn, frustrate and intimidate and blackmail and otherwise annoy the pasty, limp-wristed white leftists with a chance. Also: don't underestimate a black dem in the primaries. Jesse did quite well. Today's News

She might actually drain votes from Sharpton and cut down his number of delegates - and her own.

But, if she could be convinced to join forces for a Sharpton/Moseley Braun ticket, we could have the opposition ticket of our dreams.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how this can be accomplished?

Just workin' with what I was given -- MOSELEY-BRAUN: Presidents' Day Plans is the original title from National Journal.

Too true, given that the high point of her career was leading the Macarena at the democrat convention in '96.

Well, I'm afraid you'll have to bite the bullet this time around. We need to throw our support behind Carol, and see if we can push her off the cliff (metaphorically speaking, of course).

I agree with your sentiments. I'd much prefer Washington's Birthday, but the tides of political correctness are drowning all the good holidays.

Yes . . . you're right. We're going to need to corral her until at least the summer of '04.

Anyone here have experience herding cats?

Yes...she agrees NOT to run on her own in exchange for Sharpton's consideration as the Veep candidate, when he wins the nomination. Sharpton's offering it already to everybody anyway.

Sharpton goes on to win either second or third place in every primary and a close second on Super Tuesday. After the primaries, he is a close second in delegates to Joe Loserman. As the other white leftists all drop out one by one, they throw their support to Sharpton, because they all hate each other by now and need to pander to their own black constituents back home. Sharpton goes over the top at the convention and chooses Braun for veep...Dream Ticket!

Well now, let's not be too hasty. Why, just this morning I told myself, "Self, why don't you run for president?" I'm still waiting for an answer.
