Pardon my ignorance, but isn't the shuttle supposed to circle in the direction of the earth's rotation? And isn't the target landing spot some place in California? But they were reentering over Texas? I think there's something I'm not quite understanding. Target landing in FL.

You might be thinking of Edwards Air Force base in the desert outside of Los Angeles....
Usually, they land in Orlando -- Texas is a little beyond where they enter the atmosphere -- West to East pathway (look at the radar of the debris field).
