No, it's not the same. When other waves of immigrants came in, true, they often displaced the previous group of poor immigrants, who then moved up in neighborhoods and worked even harder, but all of the groups were coming in at a rate and with an interest that allowed them to assimilate far more than the Hispanics do in southern California.
Maybe if you don't live here, you have no idea of the extent of the problem. It is not only a problem for the black community, though the poorer parts of the city are affected most.
There is this horrible myth that the illegals are here to do the work that no one else will do. Nothing could be more of a lie. In any homogeneous country where there is minimal immigration, that country's citizens enjoy having entry level and menial jobs for their teens and elderly to do. I lived in Switzerland for nine years and saw how proud the elderly Swiss were, sweeping the streets or waiting on tables, taking their work seriously and doing a good job of it. All sorts of entry-level jobs were done by students interning while in high school or tech school.
There will always be Americans and legal immigrants willing to watch babies, clean windows, or flip burgers. We do not NEED illegals for anything.

We have never had a period in our history like the last 35 years when standards of living for large groups of americans went down. There has also never been a state in american history that had such a high percentage of the foreign born in it as california today.

All previous ethnic groups have learned the English language and American ways and assimilated.
Until the present Hispanic population has assimilated at least as well as the Irish or Italians, we need to completely seal the Southern Border. Afterwards, we need to have limited immigration and guest worker programs, but continue to do whatever is necessary to stop all illegal infiltration.

Hey, why should Terry have to "deal with it", why should anyone have to "deal with it"?? This is a very serious problem that our government is neglecting. Are you saying that we are required to live with this problem? Since when? From your post I can see you have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about what is taking place in our city of LA.
Translation: don't deal with it.
The reason why I say that is because Mr. Anderson is in fact dealing with it. He is recognizing the problem and advocating a solution -- ie, controlled and legal immigration. So when you say 'deal with it' you really mean that you don't like that solution -- or any solution, for that matter. What you want to do is muddy up the waters of the discussion so that nothing will get done.

We see a lot from this mindset; mostly from those who are either making money by selling out their countrymen, or whose ox hasn't yet been gored.
The American way to "Deal with it" is to vote out traitors and vote in some Americans who abide by their oath and properly represent their constituents.
Failing that, the next step in the American way is outlined in the first several paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence.
If there has been civilization that has benefited from a mix of ethnic groups, I haven't come across it. Either one group is subservient to the other or there is constant civil strife and unrest.
A nation has an identity made from that of each person. When it loses that identity it does not survive, and much of the time, violently. If members of great groups identity themselves by their sole allegiance to their ethnic source obviously they don't identify as Americans.
It's true that America was built by immigrants, but those immigrants became Americans, willing to defend her and make their children fully American, and they had enough respect for her to apply for citizenship with all the hours study that made necessary. The big majority of the ones coming here now do not, and have no intention to.
The dominant motive now is greed and individual survival without regard to the well being of others. When any group with this kind of attitude gains political muscle, look to your own security.
I certainly hope you can "deal with" that, my dear. As a woman, if indeed you are a woman, your security rests in the stability of your nation.
