African-Americans drowning in wave of illegal immigration
Houston Chronicle ^ | February 2, 2003 | TERRY ANDERSON

Posted on 02/02/2003 8:55:55 AM PST by Dog Gone

THE black community has made great strides in the last few decades. Racism has certainly not been eradicated, but it is no longer accepted with a wink and a nod as it once was. We are proud to see Secretary of State Colin Powell, even when we do not agree with everything he does. The same with Condoleezza Rice, the president's national security adviser, and many others.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that in some regions we black folks are so overwhelmed by the huge numbers of immigrants that we are being displaced in our schools, jobs and neighborhoods.

That may seem a harsh thing for a black person to say against brown people, but I don't see it that way. I am an American, proud of both my nation and my race. What I see in my community of South Central Los Angeles -- where I have lived nearly all my life -- is thousands of Mexicans who care nothing about our traditions and culture, and only want to impose their way on us. That's not immigration, that is invasion.

It is sad what has happened in my neighborhood. This was a respectable, blue-collar area of hard-working black folks living in their bungalows and going to their jobs. In just a couple decades it has become almost entirely Mexican. They live several families to a three-bedroom house and keep chickens in the yard, but the city doesn't care about the zoning violations or the noise of having so many crowded into a small space.

According to the Census Bureau, nearby Watts is now 60 percent Hispanic, and it was previously the black community on the West Coast. No longer.

The immigration situation is really hard on our young people. A 17-year-old kid on my street couldn't get a job at McDonald's because he didn't speak Spanish. Another young neighbor boy was thrown into a bilingual classroom at age 8 and was forced to listen to Spanish all day long. His six-hour school day was turned into three hours. When his mother asked for an English-only class, she was told "there are none."

Would you believe that I, a black man, have been called a racist many times for speaking up against this invasion? I have a radio program on the subject and therefore hear from a lot of people, even some in Mexico.

When they call me a racist, I put this question to them: What if a hundred thousand Vietnamese were suddenly dropped into Guadalajara? And what if those newcomers didn't speak Spanish, and further insisted that their children be taught in Vietnamese? What would you think if they were happy to work for half the normal wages for any job they could get, thereby putting thousands of your local Guadalajarans out of work? Would it be racist to say there was a problem?

When people of good will and good sense hear the situation put that way, nearly all understand and respect my viewpoint.

Now if only they would listen in Washington. America's political leaders are the problem. They have been selling out this great nation for real and imaginary political benefits while ignoring the dangers. Even after Sept. 11, nothing has been done to plug up our borders. Another terrorist attack could be 10 times worse, and it would likely happen because Congress and the president learned nothing about the need to keep the nation's borders secure.

If I sound angry, you hear right. Like other Americans, I want immigration to be legal, controlled and reduced. But as a black American, I see that the burden my people must carry is heavier than for many others. I am sure that if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were alive, he would understand the fundamental unfairness to the black community of allowing more immigration than the nation can handle.

What traditions are the author talking about? Ebonics, reparations, silly-assed kwanzaa? Getting into a university just because you're black? The author has a hard sell here.

I do agree with him - we have a deadly serious illegal immigration problem. Deporting ALL illegal aliens should be the number one priority of the governemnt, even ahead of taking care of iraq. Illegal aliens, most of which are mexicans, are taking FAR, FAR more than they produce. They get free medical care at the local hospital er. Their kids get free education. They get welfare. The state with the most of them, california, is the state that has the highest budget deficit. They take jobs that citizens should have, ESPECIALLY WHEN THESE CITIZENS ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS IN A RECESSION!

** My reaction to Mr. Anderson's concerns is "Hey! That's life. It's happened to many groups, ethnic or otherwise, over the span of history, and it's going to happen some more. Deal with it."**

Hey, why should Terry have to "deal with it", why should anyone have to "deal with it"?? This is a very serious problem that our government is neglecting. Are you saying that we are required to live with this problem? Since when? From your post I can see you have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about what is taking place in our city of LA.

My reaction to Mr. Anderson's concerns is "Hey! That's life. It's happened to many groups, ethnic or otherwise, over the span of history, and it's going to happen some more. Deal with it."

Translation: don't deal with it.

The reason why I say that is because Mr. Anderson is in fact dealing with it. He is recognizing the problem and advocating a solution -- ie, controlled and legal immigration. So when you say 'deal with it' you really mean that you don't like that solution -- or any solution, for that matter. What you want to do is muddy up the waters of the discussion so that nothing will get done.

Wonder where you were when the Germans invaded the Poles?

READING THIS I feel very helpless like there is no stopping the ruination of my country ,I am waiting for the mexicans to declare southern cal a new nation ,they will soon want their own laws and want to govern themselves, I suppose that this is ok with the author but it is not ok with most AMERICANS ,we will fight to keep this nation whole ,I know the authors are gloading now but that wont last forever, sooner or later the rest of the country will come to the aid of california and when it happens it wont be pretty.

Good article. Very insightful... Something conservatives have been yelling and screaming about (and been labeled racist for) for years...

What goes around, comes around, eh?

Where does THAT attitude come from? I agree with rdb-- "But one would think that Americans of all stripes would stand together on this issue." Where's the unity? This ain't about "It's happened to many groups, ethnic or otherwise, over the span of history", it's about preserving the state of the union. The kid couldn't get a job in his own durned American neighborhood because he didn't speak Spanish. What a load of bull. How would you like it if that happened to you? It's downright meanspirited to sit back and say "well you had it coming" just on account of the likes of the Rear-ends Jackson and Sharpton et al. This is everybody's problem, dudes and dudettes.

I have no problem with immigrants as long as they pay their taxes like the rest of all God's children. Okay, let me be excruciatingly explicit: I have no problem with Mexican immigrants per se. Illegals, deadbeats, criminals, welfare hustlers, and Persistent Non-Assimilaters (e.g., not bothering to learn English) is where I have a problem. We got enough of them already.

The issue is criminality, not skin color.

Anderson hasn't yet figured that out.

His "Vietnamese" example is disgusting. Vietnamese people have assimlated gratefully into American culture.

"Hispanic" illegals cannot and will not. Ever.

Let me see.

African-Americans are always victims.

White Americans are “oppressing” black people, therefore they deserve to be discriminated against through quotas, set-asides and AA.

Korean-Americans are “oppressing” black people, therefore they deserve to have their property destroyed, just like it happened during the OJ riots in LA.

Jewish Americans are “oppressing” black people, therefore they deserve vile verbal and physical attacks, such as Jesse Jackson calling NY “hymie town”, or the riot that let eight people dead at the behest of “Rev” Sharpton

Now it’s the Hispanic Americans' turn. This concern about "illegal" immigration would be valid if it was coming for a community known for law-abiding citizens.

Last time I checked, black people were a small minority in America but commit the majority of crimes in this country.

What about removing the rafter in your eye first?

I don't buy the premise of the article, that somehow these neighborhoods are being "run down" by Hispanic immigrants

Very revealing. Still didn't answer my question, though.

The issue is criminality, not skin color.

And that's what I'm talking about. That is MY whole argument for tightening the border. I don't care if folks are brown green or purple-- like I said above, if they come in here the legal way and pay taxes and speak some form of English like all the rest of us, I got nothin' against 'em.

(Damn. I know exactly what I want to say, but the thoughts are moving alot faster than the actual word processing...)

It seems that some folks are trying to talk about a "black invasion", analogous to a "Mexican invasion". The latter concept is, quite frankly, valid in many cases. The former concept is, quite frankly, grotesquely ludicrous and does not deserve to be dwelt on. Thus, the idea that blacks are getting their "come-uppance" by being ousted from the number-one-minority spot, is severely flawed.

THUS--- Okay now I really did lose my train of thought... Somebody else take the soapbox...

I've become more interested in all this Latino pickle lately-- seeking employment in New Mexico, where I understand close to 50% of the population is Hispanic... Since about all the Spanish I remember is besemeculo, I reckon I best brush up a little... (On second thought, that may be about all I need...)

is there a way for us to quantify exactly which corporations/companies use illegals?

We could do some company *profiling*. Start out with construction companies of any sort; highways, homes, buildings, etc. Just go through your local yellow pages and look at the larger companies. The INS could have a field day raiding any one of them.

Branch out to resturants, again just using the yellow pages. The larger chain restaurants certainly employ illegals. But you do have the problem of getting the INS to act. Afterall, the only thing of interest to them is bomb-making terrorists, and illegal Mexican and Central Americans don't usually fall into that group.

Everybody knows that there are millions of illegals all over the U.S., particularly in the southwestern states, and nothing has or is being done about it. We've switched to a bilingual society just to accomodate our illegal Mexicans. They don't need to learn English, we are rewarded in job opportunities for learning to speak Spanish. We have their wretched el Presidente Fox, telling us to be very nice to his people that are here ILLEGALLY and should have only the right of being repatriated back home. Viva La Reconquista! Ole!
