Record for NoIndoctrination.org entry #8.

University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Oct. 7, 2002
  http://www.ucsb.edu CA
Course: Soc 1: Introduction to Sociology
Course Catalog Description: Basic Concepts and issues in the study of human society. The structures and processes of human conduct, social organization, and social change.
  Professor: Margaret George-Cramer
Required? Yes, for my major or minor
  Lecture Bias: Excessive
Comments: When I signed up for this class, I was under the impression that I would be learning the basics of sociology as the course description indicated. I quickly got the impression that I would not be learning such a thing at all. The entire course seemed more like an introduction to victimology to me. The course began with the Marxian and Durkheimian models of social stratification and then progressed into 10 weeks of anti-capitalist, anti-globalization rhetoric. We were shown several theories on globalization that portrayed Western civilization as almost demonic, heartless, and ruthless beasts that enslave the world for financial gain. When I asked whether there were other models of globalism that did not progress such ideas, the professor threw an angry glare my way and said there are no other models. She then added that even if there were, it would be unconscionable to mention them when there was so much oppression and exploitation going on. On another occasion, Professor George-Cramer presented slides on the recent protests in Seattle during the meeting of the World Trade Organization. She showed images of police in riot gear pushing back a group of protesters. She turned to the class and asked something like; "does this look like a democracy to you?" As if to imply that the police were trying to silence protesters. In another slide, she displayed a Starbucks with broken windows that had been vandalized by the protesters. She quickly stated that there were a few occasions such as this one and then brushed it off as a minor incidence. Although the protesters had clearly violated their right to march and picket non-violently by destroying local businesses, she still presented it as though the police were acting wrongfully in their effort to maintain order and that the protesters freedom of speech was being silenced. In no less than three different lectures, the professor showed video's on sweatshop exploitation, but never showed any videos on organizations that make it a point to maintain high standards of working conditions for their employees. I also felt that throughout the course, the professor took extra effort to push Marx's ideas on the class while brushing aside other ideas including the ones presented in the text. She spent no time discussing the Symbolic Interactionist view or Social Darwinism or any other important sociological framework for that matter. In every case in which I attempted to politely disagree with her point, I was met with a smug remark and on one occasion was later ridiculed for asking any such question as the one I posed. Although I do not recall what that particular question was about I feel that I was respectful and polite in the way in which I phrased it. Finally, one of the questions on the multiple choice final for the class asked: "What system is based on the division and exploitation of classes?" The answer to the question was capitalism, and in order to receive a good grade on the test I was forced to select that answer although I did not agree. What angered me the most about this experience was that at no time during this "Introduction to Sociology" class did I learn anything about group interactions, interpersonal interactions, or social constructions of society beyond those that progressed Marxist ideas and anti-capitalist notions.
  Discussion Bias: N/A
Comments: The T.A. for the course only showed up three times out of the ten times the section met and of those three times two of them were reviews for the midterm and final. Although I attempted to talk to him about the bias I felt was being presented in lecture, he quickly responded that he did not feel that she was teaching in a biased way and said she was less biased than most teachers in the department.
  Readings Bias: Noticeable
Comments: Although the reading presented several views and ideas, it still clearly pushed more the left oriented ones than the others.
  General Comments: N/A

Yes, I also mock hyphened names.

Apparently, Ms. George-Cramer couldn't decide which Seinfeld character she preferred, so she used both of her favolrites. Probably will be changing her first name to Elaine.

"What system is based on the division and exploitation of classes?"

What system is based on the fiction that human beings will abandon all self-interest and will work their little red butts off for the common good, while singing Kumbaya, in perfect harmony?

(answer) Socialism. I will also accept Marxism or Communism.

How do I nominate a professor? I am aware of some here at our local college who made sure that the university paid good moeny to have their hero, Micheal Moore, speak to the students.

Go to the link at the top for the website, read the rules, and do a write up. Hopefully, the offending teacher will be guilty of more than a Michael Moore invite.

Please pass the no indoctrination website on to friends.

Well, besides the anti-Bush tirade she gives her students every class and how she organizes very anti-war (read: anti-American) rally here in town.

That is perfect. Get on the website and get writing! We can then send it to her, her colleagues, the administration, and the local newspaper. Print and and post it around campus. You also need to mail talk show host Larry Elder at sage@larryelder.com. He is collecting this info for a book he is doing.

I think it is tragic that these women live such pathetic lives. It is obvious that these women have nothing but contempt for anything masculine. They have rejected an entire gender of the human species, the gender to which they owe every freedom they enjoy. She is a tortured soul.

"Say hello to her. I sent an e-mail directing her to this post."

I'll tell her you send your love.

This situation would simply be sad, if it were not for the potential damage that women like that might have on young impressionable minds, especially female.

Sometimes I wonder what kind of parent would allow their child to be subjected to that type of neurotic. Somewhere at the heart of her pathology is a hatred for her father.

This has been going on a long time.

Yet, to be honest, it began in elementary school back in the 80’s
