The first time I heard that term used was in the Internet Oracle (formerly the Usenet Oracle and the rec.humor.oracle newsgroup) humor archives in the late '80s. A zot! is a non-answer from the Oracle to your question and is supposed to be reserved for only the most stupid questions (like the picture above, it involves the massive discharge of electricity and the questioner being fried to a crisp). I've zotted people before on some occasions when I was being incarnated as the Oracle, but I always felt bad about it. I don't know where the term was used before that.

You owe the Oracle an hour of time in a search engine reading FAQs. There are probably dozens if not hundreds of web pages that describe what a Zot! is.
