SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Trekking to the top of Mt. Hamilton, some 4,000 feet above the Silicon Valley, amateur astronomer Rick Baldridge took still photos and video footage on Feb. 1 of what he thought would be an uneventful re-entry flyover by the space shuttle Columbia.

I would be interested in seeing the film he took of previous shuttle landings.

Call me intellectually lazy or overly visually oriented or whatever, but these "I have pictures!" stories with no pictures are beginning to get a little old.

This is a very credible guy. I think he gives as accurate account as I've read to date. There have got to be pieces of shuttle west of Texas. The problem is going to be finding them.

I agree. NASA must release ALL the pictures they have to the public.

If he saw anything, it's a tile, IMO.

The video in question has been on news programs in the Bay Area since the day after this event occurred.

NASA is not going to release any photos until they thoroughly review and assess their authenticity and evaluate accordingly; ie, don't hold your breath waiting for the photos. In due time, they'll be released.

You could be right, or he may have seen more. Sounds like the foam-hitting-the-tile theory has gone by the wayside. I'm hoping they will be able to tell if 'something else' hit the shuttle at that time. I don't know what the something else would be, but with all the video and pictures, you'd think someone captured it.

It sounds like there's a ring of truth to his statements, and actions, to me.

Saturday a.m., I started following one of the threads about the loss of communications with the shuttle. A TX FReeper came on very early in the thread to report what he had heard over his home. Though I didn't recognize his screen name, there was the same ring of truth in his reporting.

I would still like to see a comparable photo from a previous shuttle re-entry. Otherwise the man has no credibility.

I am not certain, but I believe I read that this was NOT the usual trajectory for a landing.

You are correct.....and probably to "try" to lessen the stress to the left wing....which, when the truth comes out(if it does), was not in pristine condition....

Well not necessarily, stuff that fell off would be in almost the same "orbit" as the shuttle itself, so it might not have fallen all that much short of where the rest did. Texas is a big state too, and the track took it right up over the panhandle which is a good long way from the main debris field in east central Texas.

I just heard on the radio, KTSA in San Antonio, (heard it twice now) that they've found what they think is a wing somewhere near Ft. Worth, which would be 80-100 miles farther "back" along the ground track than anything else found to that point, but still` nearly 400 miles from the approximate place where they ground track would have crossed into Texas.

It only took 3 hours for a relative/loon I know to claim it was sabotage because an Israeli was aboard, and it was by firing lasers from our U-3 (not, not U-2) planes. So, with that in mind, I'd love to see the photos.

I have been searching for a good map overlay of the path from CA to TX and have not been able to find anything outside of TX. We have been told it flew over SF Bay area and then over Las Vegas then on to So. NM executing two turning maneuvers to slow the craft. The path was not in a straight line like in TX. So this stuff would be spread all over our area too, unbeknownst to all. Has anyone seen a link that shows the actual official ground track???

There was no indication in the story he was a publicity hound, and most such slimeballs are too lazy to hike up a mountain to perpetrate a fraud.

So if things were visibly falling off the shuttle at that point, where did the trouble actually start? The earlier things started to go bad, the more the question becomes: what did NASA know, and when did they know it?

I believe the very first reports were for citizens in the Ft. Worth area to be aware that debris could be falling in their area.

My only point is that since he's said he witnessed previous re entries I would like to see comparable photos. He also stated that he did not see the break apart with his eyes and it was only when he had the film developed that the anomaly appeared. If he didn't take pictures of the previous re-entries he has nothing to base his opinion upon, even tho he may very well be correct in when the shuttle began to break up.

But the "something else" had two weeks in which to hit the shuttle and breach the thermal protection system. There are millions of bits of debris in low Earth orbit, with an RMS velocity (with respect to the Shuttle) of around 25,000 mph. A small screw or bit of rubber could take out a couple of contiguous tiles without anyone noticing.

STS-107 MCC Status Report #25
Friday, February 7, 2003 7 p.m. CST
Mission Control Center, Houston, Texas

The independent board charged with determining what caused the destruction of Columbia met with NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston. Space Shuttle Program Manager Ron Dittemore flew to the External Tank manufacturer in Michoud, La. to discuss processing of the tank with engineers. Recovery teams continued to search for debris.

Dittemore told an afternoon briefing that a small portion of the reinforced carbon-carbon insulation of the leading edge of one of the Shuttle's wings was found in the Fort Worth, Texas area. It measures approximately 26-27 inches in length and 18 inches wide. It has not been determined whether it is from the left or right wing. The magnitude of the search for shuttle debris has expanded, with more than 1200 people involved in the recovery effort, including 220 from NASA and 800 National Guardsmen.

The investigation is entering a new phase, now that the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB), chaired by retired Navy Admiral Harold Gehman, Jr., has taken over the inquiry.

"This will be a long, painstaking process," Dittemore said of the investigation. "But I am proud of this (Shuttle Program) team. They have risen to the occasion."

Administrator O'Keefe echoed those statements when he met with employees at the JSC, praising them for their dedication during a time of grief, while vowing that the space program would emerge from the accident stronger than ever.

The CAIB will be based near JSC. The CAIB Charter is available on the Internet at: http://www.nasa.gov/columbia/board_documents.pdf

In his afternoon briefing, Dittemore presented charts showing the sequential shutdown of sensors during the final minutes of Columbia's flight as the orbiter encountered a problem as yet undefined. He also revealed a fuzzy photo taken by Air Force cameras as Columbia flew overhead. Dittemore discounted earlier press reports, which interpreted the damage, as premature. He said, " It is not clear to me that this photo reveals anything significant at this point." -more- -2-

While data analysis continued, the residents of the International Space Station completed their unloading of a Russian Progress resupply ship today and conducted a variety of biomedical experiments. Expedition 6 Commander Ken Bowersox, Flight Engineer Nikolai Budarin and NASA ISS Science Officer Don Pettit are in their 76th day in space, their 74th day on board the complex.

With shuttle missions on indefinite hold, NASA managers are discussing whether adjustments are needed to the late April launch of a new Russian Soyuz TMA spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It would be manned by a "taxi" crew that delivers the craft used for assured crew return to the Station and returns to Earth in the Soyuz currently at the station. Potential options are being looked at in concert with the International Partners to keep the Station manned, safe, and productive.

While there are no plans to remove the Station crew during the Shuttle recovery period, discussions are ongoing to ensure proper manning and supplies until Shuttles fly again. Another Progress cargo vehicle is scheduled for launch the Station in June to maintain a robust supply of food, fuel, and maintenance components.

The Progress at the Station may use its engines early next week to boost the Station, two nautical miles at its apogee and 10 nautical miles at its perigee, to place the station at the correct altitude for the late April Soyuz launch. A decision will be made Monday when the boost will occur.

On Tuesday, the Expedition 6 crew will field questions from reporters during a news conference from the Station beginning at 9:34 a.m. EST. The news conference will be broadcast on NASA Television with two-way question and answer capability from reporters at NASA centers.

The next STS-107 Accident Response briefings will be on Monday from NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The time has not yet been determined. It will also be on NASA TV, with multi-center question and answer capability.
