Georgia Anti-Gun HB197 Update
Citizens for Safe Government email alert ^ | 2/10/2003 | Citizens for Safe Government

Posted on 02/11/2003 3:27:06 AM PST by from occupied ga

Atlanta, Monday, February 10) -- If you are one of the many gun owners who flooded the Georgia House Judiciary Committee members with phone calls today, you are a hero, a least for one day.

Heavy pressure from Georgia gun owners forced an unprecedented delay in consideration of the HB197 Stealth Triggerlock Bill earlier today.

A so-called "victory cruise" for anti-gunners controlling the House Judiciary Committee bogged down as Representatives faced off over the Massey Self-Defense Amendment to exempt gun owners who want to keep their guns unlocked so they are ready for self-defense.

A veteran lobbyist with more than 22 years of statehouse experience said he'd never seen the bosses stood up like this. After hours of wrangling, the committee was forced to adjourn until 2:00 pm Tuesday, when debate will resume. A showdown vote on HB197 is expected in committee late Tuesday.

Good job gun owners. Keep the pressure on. CSG plans to have a full report (with action items) on the wire to you by mid-morning Tuesday.

As expected, the anti-gunners were lying (WHAT A SURPRISE!) when they said this bill had nothing to do with gun control. If they weren't lying they would have had no objections to Massey's amendment. If you called down there yesterday Thank you Thank you

Just more proof that gun control is based in lies and deception ,but we all knew that anyway didn't we.

I hope those anti-gunners never figure out that gun control is political suicide!

Unfortunately it depends on the district. In Decatur (large black population, and home of Emory Univ) gun control is highly desirable for some strange reason. Moo Moo Oliver and SS Benefield are both from Decatur as was Brady's point man (now in the US Kongress) David Scott.

Unfortunately not a victory yet, just a lull in the battle.

Flyer pinged me to a similar article yesterday calling for GA FReepers to call the state house. (Thank-you Flyer!) Unfortunately, due to work, I didn't get the ping until after 2 p.m., when it was too late to do anything.

If someone could keep .45MAN and myself updated on future actions to be taken to keep this abomination from passing, it would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone have information about links to GA House web sites that have copies of pending legislation?

I'd like to read the bill (plus any analysis that's out there) before I 'pull the trigger' so to speak.

It used to be that most of that material could only be had by physically going down to the capitol. They *like* keeping us in the dark.

The legislative site is http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2003_04/leg/legislation.htm HOWEVER This only has the initial version of the bill and the committee versions are often kept secret.

See post #9 here for Warren Massey's analysis of the bill.

Thanks for this.

I've sent the following e-mail to MM Oliver (she's my Rep...UGH).

Dear Mrs. Oliver:

I am a Decatur voter and one of your constituents.

I am writing to express my strong opposition to HB 197 in its current form.

It is an unwarranted intrusion into my right to defend my family and my property.

I strongly urge you to support Warren Massey's Self-Defense amendment. Without this explicit modification the legislation is fatally flawed.

Thank you for you attention to my concerns.

Regards,

I'm certain this falls on deaf ears.

Yes and no. Yes in that that fat sow, Oliver won't change her vote to support Massey. No in that it let's her and her ilk know that they can't get away with it unopposed.

I'm so ashamed! We have been working on getting a bill passed to get oversite on the eminent domain powers of the electric companies here and we almost completely missed this other major violation of our rights.

Thank you FReepers, we'll be at the State House tomorrow with our bill and we will also stick our noses into this one too.

Again thanks FreeRepublic.
