DOG SHOW BREEDS CONTEMPT

No sooner had I walked backstage at Madison Square Garden yesterday when I was brushed aside by a beautifully groomed, purebred bitch who possessed the manners of a mongrel.

She was a dog owner.

"A- -hole!" the high-strung biped ranted, just loud enough to drive a sensitive cocker spaniel to the kibble.

We had a basset a few years back (Dewey Defeats Truman) and my daughter misses him terribly. While he was not the brightest light in the house, he definately was the most entertaining. He would chase a flashlight beam around. We were very excited when the basset took best in show and will be rooting for him tonight.

"Why not a springer spaniel?"

Well, the kid was more attracted to the Engie (Cocker, that is). They're smaller, don't take up as much of the bed (grin), and people stop dead in their tracks when they see her. She's blue roan, and they can't figure out what she is right away. We refer to her as the "mystery spaniel".

We've got good friends with Springers. They're great dogs.

According to Dave Letterman, The French Poodle and German Shepherd withdrew from the competition...

LOL, he must have great writers.

The late night shows have been ragging on the French and Germans something fierce. Even Saturday Night Live did a funny skit lampooning the UN Security Council. It's good to see at least some entertainment figures sticking up for the good old USA.

Not if a Westie sees it first!

"...when does the terrier group show?"

Answer: Yesterday. It was won by Mick, a famous (in the dog show world) Kerry Blue who is the favorite to win Best in Show. He won the big English show, Crufts, and he won the AKC Invitational last month. Considered one of the greatest show dogs ever. A beautiful fellow, indeed, although I did really like the Smooth Fox Terrier who finished 3rd in the group last night.

I've owned Newfoundlands most of my life, so I'm rooting for this unbelievably impressive example to take the big prize. They're the greatest dogs in the world, imo.

Having gone the dog show route with my German Wirehaired Pointers for some years, I agree with you that the AKC is a crock. Dog shows are about human egos, not about "improvement of the breed." In fact, many breeds have been seriously harmed by the way dog shows divorce a dog's original function from its appearance.

This is not an actual picture of my lttle Sheltie, Sandie, but so close it's his twin.

We've had one mongrel (17 years) and two Shelties (Brodie died at 15).

None are/were show dogs just 20 pounds or so of love, love, love and chew, chew, chew.

Each of them trained my wife and I to be good dog owners.

Look at those feet! Bigger than my hands.

Grooming aside, he just doesn't look right to me. Are they really supposed to be so stubby? I thought newfs were a tall breed.

They're also bred for appearance at the expense of health. AKC German Shepherds can no longer be used as search and rescue dogs, due to a hip deformity which has been bred in for appearance. As a result, search and rescue German Shepherds must be imported from Europe, where this sort of idiocy hasn't completely overrun the world of dog breding.

The AKC rakes in money for providing papers to breeders of dogs of unknown parentage, with the full knowledge that the sellers of these dogs will use the AKC papers to convince buyers to pay several hundred dollars more for the dog than they would pay for the same dog without these papers. The AKC is knowingly aiding and abetting fraud.

Moderately funny movie.

I disagree. I thought it was a riot.

Yes but, it was a classic example of a movie that could have been just as funny without the sexual crudeness that so defines our age. I just find "doggie style" jokes and the rest so adolescent I can't enjoy the movies, TV shows, radio shows, advertisements that are so filled with them.

I can well believe it!! Great name for a basset!

Have you considered replacing him with a rescue basset? The basset "look" is attracts many unsuspecting people who are not prepared to live with a big dog on short legs. If nothing else, you and your daughter will certainly enjoy visiting this site for basset lovers.

We have considered it but she is heading off to college in August and we also have a Jack Russell. I don't think I can handle two high energy dogs (for those of you who do not know, bassets can be very active dogs). We do miss him though. I had no idea how fast those short legged dogs can be.

I visited the daily drool and it is now bookmarked. Thanks

When I see that kind of dog, I always think of Karen Killilea and her dog. I wonder if she or any family member still have Newfs.
