People in the News

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton will debut with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra on the March 25 program "Let Freedom Ring," a celebration of the American spirit that pays tribute to the seven Columbia astronauts.

Clinton will narrate Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait," which includes excerpts from speeches by Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The orchestra will perform Gustav Holst's "Jupiter," the fourth movement of Holst's seven-movement suite "The Planets," to honor the astronauts who died when the space shuttle Columbia broke apart before landing on Feb. 1.

Foreman native Lawrence Hamilton, star of Broadway's "Ragtime," will make a special appearance in a program that also includes George Gershwin's "American in Paris."

The one-night-only performance will benefit the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation.

Tickets start at $30 and go on sale Feb. 24 through the ASO box office.

Re the landmark: Yes, it was a Black historical landmark, but wouldn't the Presidential Library of the First Black President also be a Black historical landmark?

Say what? Lincoln Portrait (composed in 1941) includes quotes from Lincoln only - hence the title Lincoln Potrait. They better not be mucking around with one of my favorite Copland compositions. I hope this is a mistake.

Clinton will narrate Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait,"

How inappropriate. Had Copeland written a piece called "Fanfare for the Crooked Prez", then maybe Clinton would be the logical choice to narrate.

What a joke, when the Clinton's win America loses. Will there be any additions to the Lincoln Portrait from Sheryl Crowe? Or maybe Susan Saradon?

You forgot Cooter on the washboard, his old lady on the spoons, and Altus fanning the flies off everyone.

I hate Clinton and I hate that he is having anything at all to do with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra...which is an exceptional orchestra led by the renown David Itkin. Sorry, no spoons...I get sick of the put downs and stereotypes but it only gives people an idea of how small your own mind is.

Arkansas is a beautiful state and a great place to visit. It's unfortunate the the Sinkmeister claimed my favorite place to visit, Hot Springs, as one of his home towns.

Hey folks, there's sewage everywhere. And the putdown of Arkansas is unjustified. Try it and see.

I agree on not putting down Arkansas. Putting down Clinton isn't even a challenge. He should have been from Mississippi, scratch that. He should been from France.

No offense intended. Our local classical stations do not often (read:ever) play selections from the ASO.

Eight years of the monstrous Clinton Regime has perhaps poisoned my mind as regards Arkansan culture. So, mia culpa. As a reasonable person of no small mind, I am persuaded to seek out any evidence of intelligent life in Little Rock or the Ozarks, or anywhere else you would care to direct me.
