The Republican Party of Texas Platform has been MUCH in the news of late because it is a CONSERVATIVE document and, as such, VERY controversial. I thought it would be an instructive exercise, for those of us who wish to do so here, to go through it plank by plank and see where we stand on these issues. Pursuant to that, I will post ONE plank of the Platform, every few days and anyone who wishes to can state their views as to that particular part of the platform.
Today, under the heading Strengthening The Economy Of Texas And America we find the following plank :
Right-to-Work - An individual should have the freedom to work in the job he/she desires without being forced to join or pay dues to any organization. The Texas Right-to-Work Law, while providing this freedom, also has provided a good climate for industrial expansion, higher employment, and a stable management-labor relationship. To this end, the Party applauds the Texas Right-to-Work Law and encourages our legislators to call for a referendum to make this law a constitutional amendment. We encourage the adoption of a National Right-to-Work Act providing the same kind of protection from labor unions as is enjoyed by Texans under the State Right-to-Work laws.

I have decided to score myself by assigning a score of between 0 and 10 points to each of the planks! 10 means I agree with EVERYTHING in it. 0 means I agree with NOTHING in it.
10 more points brings my running score to this point to 1166 of a possible 1280.

Joining a union should always be voluntary.
And you should definitely do so, if you're incompetent and want to make it difficult for your employer to get rid of you.

Missing something regarding Beck amendment. I assume this is in another plank.
10 points. If I find out Beck amendment is not referenced elsewhere, then 9 points. For now, 10. 1073/1280 (0.838)

I just got the word yesterday that my job is relocating to Houston.
As I work in a closed shop state the right to work issue is a very big topic with the union. They are scared stiff that their membership is going to take a big hit.
My thought is that the competition for membership should force the union work for their dues rather than just sit back and let the cash roll in.
Although I will admit that with this whole surplus/relocation that my company has gone through the union has actually worked their butts off and suprised me.
By the way, I'm looking forward to Floyd's, crawdads and beer!

I for the Right-to-Work laws. Keep in mind though it includes a right-to-fire without cause as well.

Where you coming from? If you are coming from points North and East please leave the cold and snow behind... LOL
I think the plank was written with the most pro-liberal, pro-democrat, and anti-Beck amendment people in mind. My limited experience with unions is that the smaller they are, the more employee friendly they are.

We're coming down from the Kansas City area. We'd be happy to bring a couple of feet of snow with us!
Actually it's been drier than anything up here. Heard this morning that we've only received 5.7" of snow up here this year, generally we get quite a bit more.
Now we're just waiting for the company to let us know when they want us down there. May not be until next fall.
I've been pretty anti union for my time here, but the union's performance in this surplus/relocation has been pretty good. I think the right to work issue is going to make them more competitive and more willing to show value for the dues.

You will like Houston...
No state income tax. Property taxes may be a little higher here, but I used to live in Chicago where we had high property taxes AND a state income tax. Now that stinks.
No gambling (except for the lottery) (YET). Houston looking into make the Astrodome a slot house. Unlikely to happen soon.

I'm referring to the Law here in Texas. It is what I was told some years ago from the Texas Workforce Commission. There is also a book out as well. Dealing with this issue - basically stating you should have a Employment contract to protect yourself-(rather or not you belong to a Union-which I don't - and have no need to belong). :o)

I lived in Houston for 6 years........summers are hell, no doubt about it and the city sort of re-defines the word sprawl. But it is a great city to conduct business, both large and small, with a great can-do attitude by a large and diverse work force.
If you like seafood, check out Pappadeaux's......good as any you will find anywhere (and i mean anywhere). They also have sister restaurants that specialize in Italian, Tex-Mex, and they also have a high end steak house in town.
