A womanizer who supported unfettered access to abortion. Why doesn't that surprise me?
To: aculeus
Wow!
Can't wait to see the major coverage of these revelations on NBC, CBS and ABC </sarcasm>.

There is a conservative law professor at a prominent university who has a long-standing habit of referring to William O. Douglas as "William Zero Douglas."

Great post, thanks

Posner should be on the short list for SC nomination.
I do disagree though and do believe John Marshall to be a genius.

Bump for an outstanding review by an important legal scholar.
Douglas sounds a whole lot like Bill Clinton in this portrait. This is a book I have to read.

It is becoming more and more apparent that to be an icon or a titan of the left requires a person to get their morals, character, and integrity from a cesspool.

Posner is too smart, too widely published, too independent and too quirky to ever be nominated, although he clearly towers over anyone nominated in the last 10 years by either party (and anyone likely to be nominated by W).

long read bump

Douglas...became a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission and before long its chairman. His two years as chairman brought notable successes in efforts to regulate the stock exchanges and made him a hero of the second New Deal. FYI Of the 10 worst stock market crashes in the 20th century fully 1/2 took place under FDR, the New Deal, and presumedly (Judge) Douglas. To wit:
#1) 4/17/30 - 7/8/31
294.07->41.22 -88%
#2) 3/10/37 - 3/31/38
194.40->98.95 -49.1%
#4) 9/31/29 - 11/13/29
381.17->198.69 -47.9%
#8) 9/12/39 - 4/28/42
155.92->92.92 -40.4%
#10) 9/7/32 - 2/27/33
79.93->50.16 37.2%
The winds of time are continually shearing away the gilt of FDR's legacy.

FYI Of the 10 worst stock market crashes in the 20th century fully 1/2 took place under FDR, the New Deal, and presumedly (Judge) Douglas.Actually, 3 of those 5 crashes you listed above (#1,4, and 10) occurred under Republican President Herbert Hoover.
FDR was awful, also, of course. Generally speaking, both Democrat and Republican Presidents are awful. There are few good Presidents; America is a great country in spite of the Democrat and Republican Parties, not because of them.

Don't count him out. His colleague on the UofC faculty, Richard Epstein, is also brilliant and would be a welcome addition to the Court.
