Sandy Koufax- Apology Not Enough from Dodgers Over 'Gay' Article

Sandy Koufax will sever his 48 year ties with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers over a ballclub parent owned article that appeared in the New York Post that said a 'Hall of Fame Dodger player' was gay.

The Dodgers had offered a formal apology to the all star in return for his particiaption in club activites

Koufax was the DiMaggio of his generation: pure class. I watched his perfect game on TV and saw a no-hitter and a 18-strikeout game in person.

The thing I remember about Sandy Koufax was a game against the Giants in Candlestick Park. The Giants had all kinds of right-handed power in their lineup and had been crushing the ball for about two weeks before then, and the light-hitting Dodgers were said to be running into a juggernaut.

Koufax beat them 11-1 on three hits, not one of which was hit hard -- two infield singles and a blooper to the outfield. Willie Mays said he's never seen a more dominant pitcher in any game than Koufax was in that one. Most awesome pitching performance I've ever seen.

That's what I remember about Sandy Koufax.

If I were Koufax, I'd never associate with the Dodgers again (at least for so long as they are owned by News Corp).

The worst thing to happen to the Dodgers was to be sold to Rupert Murdock. They went from being a unique organization under the O'Malley family to just another team.

Better to fight back than take it, even if it means greater publicity. Unfortunately, we see fewer and fewer personal stands being taken today when the media is involved. Like appeasing an aggressor, they are more emboldened with each outrage gone by unremarked.

The greatest threat facing America is not Iraq (although it is time to act there)--it is (i) a "news" media that demands political correctness, willingly slants current events and promotes a divisive culture and (ii) an entertainment media that glorifies violence, competes with the salacious and offers unadulterated crap like "Joe Millionaire". There has always been a bigger payoff pandering to our baser instincts (just ask the internet porn industry), and I shudder to think how low the entertainment media will sink.

Good for Sandy Koufax.

Right. DiMaggio tried to nail every chick in every town during every season during his entire career. He got the JFK treatment from the press, so never a word was ever leaked. Does that make him a bad guy? No, of course not; but please, let's not deify him.

Doesn't matter whether he's gay. He hasn't imposed his private life on the public gay or straight, so the media have no right to impose on him. He's no longer a public person.

19" pitching mound and distant fences or not, he was sublime from 1961-66 and an awesome raw talent from 1955-60. He played 12 years for the Dodgers. During that time, they won four world titles, six NL titles (losing a seventh in a playoff with the Braves), finished second or better 10 times and in the first division 11 out of 12 seasons. It doesn't hurt your chances when your ace is going 25-5 with 11 shutouts, 20+ complete games, 300 strike outs, 300 innings pitched and an ERA under 2. Plus he won a World Series game, breaking the strikeout record as the Dodgers swept. That was in '63.

My Dad wrote a book about Sandy Koufax back in the early 70's. My Dad respected him more than anyone he'd ever written about. Above all Koufax was a VERY private man. That's probably why this was so upsetting to him.

Not to bring psychology into this discussion (because I don't know anything about it) but over the Christmas holidays I read a book titled, "Double Take - Politically Incorrect Limericks" by some body named Jaggero (don't know if he knows anything about psychology either); it's a funny as heck and cheap book that makes some interesting observations about sports (in general) and baseball players (in particular).
