GA Gun Control Bill SB1 Current status (Republican Sell Out - again)

(Atlanta, Wednesday, February 26) -- A crucial hearing on the SB1 Stealth Triggerlock substitute in the Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee has been delayed to 1:30 pm Thu. Feb. 27 due to heavy calling from people opposed to the bill.

Political bosses don't like to admit it, but they know public pressure can affect the outcome of a close vote. They often hold up a day or two to let legislators settle back in line before pushing on.

"Gun owners and concerned citizens did a great job yesterday in turning up the heat on Chairman Charlie Tanksley (R-Marietta) and the members of the committee," said CSG Legislative Director Bill Phillips.

"Senate bosses want SB1 moved, but they face a backlash from angry voters if they try to run over people like former Gov. Roy Barnes (D-Mableton) did."

CSG is a non-partisan organization, but many members who voted Republican last election are disappointed Mr. Tanksley isn't using his power to bottle up this dangerous legislation belonging to Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor (D-Atlanta).

"If he won't do the right thing, what's the point of him being a Chairman?" Mr. Phillips asked. "At least when the Democrats had power, they knew how to use it." Under Mr. Taylor, Republican bills rarely saw the light of day, even if they were good. This one isn't.

You did a great job in turning up the heat on Mr. Tanksley and the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. But don't get overconfident. Sen. Tanksley is a slippery politician who served four years in the Floor Leaders office for former Gov. Roy Barnes, and he knows lots of tricks.

You've earned an extra day before the committee showdown on SB1--make good use of it. Only by increasing the pressure on Mr. Tanksley and the committee members, can you help stop the SB1 substitute Stealth Triggerlock bill. If you haven't called yet, please do so immediately. If you've already called, call again to a different committee member this time.

This over-reaching legislation means you can be charged, arrested, and taken to jail, not because a child is actually injured, but just because some official imagines it might be possible for a child to get hurt. Anti-gunners are bent on using it as a stealth triggerlock scheme to make you lock away your guns so they're not ready for self-defense.

ACTION ITEMS

  1. (a) If you voted Republican last election, contact the office of Senate Judiciary Chairman Charlie Tanksley and ask why he's pushing Democrat Party boss Mark Taylor's SB1 by Sen. Meyer von Bremen when there are already 23 bills by Republicans backed up in the Committee waiting for action. Ask for Mr. Taylor's bill to be moved to the back of the line, or better yet: bottled up for good.

    (b) If you didn't vote Republican last election, just leave a message for Mr. Tanksley saying "No" to the SB1 substitute Stealth Triggerlock bill in his committee.

*Charlie Tanksley (R-Marietta) Capitol office: 404-656-0150; fax: 404-651-6767
    district office: 770-424-1500; e-mail: charlie@browningtanksley.com

  2. Contact at least one of the senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee. If your own state senator isn't on the list, pick one at random. Contact their office and leave a message saying "No" to the SB1 substitute.
Contact the office of at least one senator on the Senate Judiciary Committee: Mr. Tanksley and senators marked with (*) voted for former Gov. Roy Barnes' SB385 Emergency Gun Confiscation bill last year which is now the law. (Mr. Reed voted for it in the House last year as a State Rep.)
  3. Many legislators don't pay any attention to e-mail, so if you use e-mail, make sure you also phone or fax the office of the chairman and at least one member of the committee.
  4. (Extra Credit) Committee member Sen. Faye Smith (D-Milledgeville) is in stable condition recovering at the Medical Center of Central Georgia from emergency surgery Monday for a brain aneurysm. A retired educator, Ms. Smith always treated gun owners with respect, and was generally mindful of the gun rights of people in Middle Georgia. Well-wishers can leave a message at her district office by calling 478-445-1385.
  5. Forward this alert to everybody you know who values their freedom and liberty.

Typical Republican sell out to the anti-gunners. CSG legislative affairs coordinator Bill Phillips has done an analysis of just who is putting the money up to drive this thing. Arthur Blank of Home Depot is one of the ultra rich statists driving this thing. I'll try to get to posting it later. I'm pretty busy right now.

Please keep those calls to your so-called "representatives" coming. The liberal elitist big money interests in Atlanta (including Arthur Blank of Home Depot fame) really want you to be disarmed. The Republican bosses smell big contributions from Blank and his accomplices if they can move this one through, so look for them to betray the constitution for a few dollars in their pockets if we let them get away with it.
