The captain said morale was so low that younger soldiers are speaking openly about surrendering — before the first shot has been fired.

Sounds like the French have already been there!

"The captain said morale was so low that younger soldiers are speaking openly about surrendering — before the first shot has been fired."

This is of course by design - so as to save the lives of the human shields surrounding Baghdad.

Very courageous - reminds me of the French.

Thanks for posting this. I saw it at Drudge, under the article about Russia threatening a veto....

One bright spot in a grim week. Hope the poor buggers all have the sense to make and hide their white flags while they can.

"Four days later, Gen. Tommy Franks, the commander of any U.S. invasion of Iraq, told the Associated Press' Robert Burns: "There may come a day when [Mr. Rumsfeld] asks me: 'Are you satisfied that you have enough?' And I will tell you truthfully he has not asked me that question."

WHA!!

I guess being made a figurehead can piss a hillbilly off huh? Next time do what the...oh wait a minute...there wont be a next time.

Darn, I thought the bombing had started. I thought it said "Iraqi Soldiers Defecating".

Sounds like the French Foreign Legion's training is paying great dividends. Maybe the French are our ally after all.

US forces could broadcast 'how to surrender' videos in Iraq featuring French military specialists.

Morale is low in the Iraqi army and many soldiers are preparing white flags of surrender, we are told by someone in northern Iraq who recently interviewed two defectors from Saddam Hussein's army.

I knew it all along that the reason the French are so against overthrowing Saddam that it would be found out that they were selling arms to Saddam.

This may be the reason saddam has pulled them back closer to Bagdad. It did not make sense at first.

I was going to say they could pull their underwear and use that for a surrender flag but it would likely be brown after the bombing starts.

His perceived enemies were not invited, including us and Washington Post reporter Tom Ricks. Most of the other regular Pentagon scribes attended the soiree,

Not percived, but a fact.

Cogratulations to Gertz and Scarborough (for not being invited to Rummy's little tea party), for being inside without being "insiders".

Iraq's military readiness can be equated to that of the USSR, at any point following WWII. A land of empty scabbards, missiles without warheads (assuming there were any cabable of flying), morale in the cellar, and big, loud talk. Oh, and lest I forget, myriads of people in the West who are (were) overwrought by the threat posed by these dictatorial wienies.

My personal guess is that we'll be using a lot less ammunition this time attacking Iraq. Knock out command and control infrastructure, capture Iraqi oilfield control centers (we've probably already done that thanks to Special Forces), and Saddam Hussein will be a goner within week since most of his military will have surrendered by then.

....most soldiers were hiding their white flags,"

Those white flags probably say "Made in France" on them.

Radio Iraq......

Even more puzzling than its name is Radio Tikrit's evolving message. When it started up, the station railed against the U.S. and Britain as "ravens of evil," mimicked news reports on Iraqi media and featured a talk titled "Before It's Too Late" that urged Iraqis to prepare to battle America.

Gradually, though, antagonism toward Washington softened and praise of the Baghdad regime soured into criticism.

By last week, the station had completed a 180-degree turn. It denounced the Iraqi leader as a "tyrant" and lambasted his family, according to BBC Monitoring, a service that transcribes, translates and analyzes foreign broadcasts. The "Before It's Too Late" slot featured a letter from an "honorable officer of the Republican Guard" urging fellow officers to abandon the Iraqi dictator: "You would be fools not to realize the extent of popular wrath that awaits you if you do not leave this gang and flee."

So what did Gertz and Scarborough do to tick Rummy off?
