Hungary: U.S. Military Violated Airspace

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) - U.S. military aircraft violated Hungarian sovereignty last month by using the country's airspace for unauthorized purposes, the defense minister said Saturday.

The incident occurred Feb. 20 when six helicopters and a tanker aircraft belonging to the U.S. armed forces flew over Hungary on their way to a military base in Romania, Defense Minister Ferenc Juhasz said at a meeting of parliament's defense committee.

Hungary had only permitted the United States to use its airspace in connection with the Enduring Freedom operation in Afghanistan. But the Feb. 20 flights were for other, unspecified purposes.

Juhasz said the United States informed him Friday afternoon that a mix-up had occurred and the seven aircraft in question had not flown to Afghanistan.

``The United States apologized for the incident,'' Juhasz said.

The government sent a ``strongly worded'' reply asking U.S. authorities to avoid similar mistakes in the future, Juhasz said.

So what's this DH bellyaching about?

Have some goulash, Juhasz.

you don't have to be a commie to not like unauthorized planes flying over your air space - it is like a friend walking in your house without an invite or even knocking on your door.

The [Hungarian] government sent a ``strongly worded'' reply asking U.S. authorities to avoid similar mistakes in the future, Juhasz said.

Perhaps the U.S. can send its own "strongly worded reply" by deporting both Zsa-Zsa Gabor AND Ariana Huffington immediately.

Not a very smart time to be complaining. We're making a list, checking it twice, gonna find out who's naughty and nice. Santa Claus is coming to town (after the war is over).

This is to respond to your response from the other thread on this subject. I had already explained that my response was a joke. Some people, sadly, have NO sense of humor and are in need of an enema.

So, because I really like what I had said in the other thread, I'll repeat it: USA to Hungary: whatcha gonna do 'bout it, dude? throw a temper tantrum?

Its a joke, people. I think its rather funny. I like it. And if you don't think its funny, fair enough.

No, it more like when your neighbor's kid climbs over your fence to retrieve a ball. Shame on them.

"Touchy, touchy, aren't we now, Hungary?"

When I was in high school (1960) I did a report on the Hungarian revolution of 1956. I learned that U.S. had encouraged freedom fighters and promised support if they would revolt. That support never came. I imagine they remember this.

I think there is more to this article than meets the eye (though I haven't figured out what it is...). We have been transiting Hungarian airspace for years in support of the Balkans missions, and for a time operated an army airfield at Kaposjulak (outside of Kaposvar) where Blackhawks, Chinooks, and Apaches ranged all over southern Hungary. Also, heavy transport traffic (C130, C141, C5A) in and out of Budapest, and Taszar. Can't imagine why this (on the surface) would rankle the Hu MOD...

There must be a reason... I suspect someone wants the world to know the US did something on February 20 that would take six helicopters and a tanker aircraft to accomplish, and it involves Romania.
