Has anyone read Robin Moore's book "The Hunt for Bin Laden"?

Has anyone read this book yet, or other works by Robin Moore? He is famous for The Green Berets, which I haven't read.

My wife and I heard him interviewed on Imus this morning, and we both as a result wanted to buy the book. Anyone have any insight into his work?

I think he also wrote the French Connection, or the book from which it was based.

The guy on Imus was not Robin Moore, it was a guy named Jack Idema (sp?) who is engaged in the promotion of the book. I have it on very good authority that this guy Idema is not and was not active SF at the time that the events depicted in the book occurred. I am also given to understand that this guy Idema (sp?) has had, shall we say, a "checkered" past.

None is this proves one way or another the quality or the accuracy of the book, but my sources say that you shouldn't believe much, if anything, this guy Idema (sp?) says.

I heard that guy this AM on Imus too. I thought he sounded a little shady. I know some stuff about SF and it seemed like to me that the guy had been out of circulation for awhile. He definitely is still not active. If so he'd be cpurt martialed for some of the "secrets" he was blabing. Who knows...I'm sure the book is very informative and an interesting read.

Your instincts are right on the money with regard to the guy on the radio...I guess the book will have to stand or fall on its own merits.

I heard the last part of this interview and thought the guy sounded credible. But I heard Imus call him both Moore and Idema, so I was confused. He had been over in Afghanistan from what I understand. I noticed that he contradicted a lot of what Ijaz has been saying (not by name, just by substance). I have questions about both of these men; this is helpful. Thanks for posting.

My recollection of the Imus info:

The guy tried to reup and was denied due to age. He winds up with "another government agancy" (wouldn't say which one) and working with the Northern Alliance. He told a good story of Rumsfeld giving the folks 10 days to get boots on the ground and only SFs could respond. He told how successful they were with a free hand.

Good stories, no way for me to validate.

Oh sh*t, you're right! No wonder he sounded so young! Robin Moore was born in 1925! Hmmm. Who is this Jack guy? Now I am really confused! Thanks though.

His name is Keith “Jack” Idema. Apparantly the book is based on his experiences.

Did he happen to mention anything about "Jawbreaker"? This was a codeword for the Special Operations Group that was in Afghanistan soon after 9/11. Their leader was "Gary" who was retiring but then went to Afghanistan to set up plans with the Northern Alliance. See the article called "America's Shadow Warriors", NY Times, 3/3/03 by Der Spiegel for lots of info; maybe some of it relates to this guy. For other info, try to watch "Covert Operations" on Discovery Channel. Very interesting re-enactment of the early days in Afghanistan before the bombing started. You know they all use aliases so it is difficult to connect them to actual people, but the work they do is incredible.

I've read two books by him. The Green Berets, and a book on the Rhodesian civil war. He has an ideological bias but is a good writer and is fairly accurate. I'll probably read his latest book when it comes paperback.
