"It's interesting to observe Mr Daschle aligning with the marxist "anti-war" protestors." ~ The Toad

He's not worried. He won't offend 1/2 the country. http://www.rense.com/general5/mandate.htm

Marxist/Socialists are the base of the DemocRAT party. UN supporters are the base of the DemocRAT party. If they want their power back, they have to cater to their base.

There is only one major political party that has a reputation for defending the Constitution, being tough on crime and for a strong national defense. I don't even need to name it. Everyone knows which one it is. If people want to stay safe and free -- they had better keep that party in power.

France and the Democrats think that Bush has assumed all along that he would get U.N. cover and has not been prepared to go without it -- they think he's been bluffing, because his actions (acceding to delay after delay and last chance after last chance) has made it look like he was bluffing.

I've been reading quite a few of your posts the past day or so about this entire situation. And, with all due respect, Scott-from-the-Left-Coast, I do not agree that this has been the reality for President Bush. I don't think he "assumed" anything at all in this matter; I don't think he's taken anything for granted. Call me simple-minded, naive, or whatever--call me a "useful idiot" of the President--but I have always believed that President Bush would go this route against Iraq ALONE, if need be. I firmly believe that after all is said and done, President Bush has been committed to getting rid of a very real, very dangerous threat to world peace/stability...even if it means political suicide. And the same for Tony Blair. It's so obvious they have so much to lose politically, yet they still hold strong, they still hold steady, they have not waivered one bit. I truly believe given this man's faith, given the incredible burden of having to decide whether or not to send American troops into battle, given his respect for the value of life, I think THE VERY LAST THING HE WANTS TO DO IS SEND AMERICANS, BRITS, AND OTHER ALLIES TO WAR AT THE RISK OF TREMENDOUS LOSS OF LIFE.

This is not a poker game with President Bush; he's too decent of a human being to play politic with the lives of so many Americans, Brits, Iraqis, et al. in the balance....I don't get the sense whatsoever that this Administration is, or thinks it is, boxed in. I just think he has been willing to wait, to hold out as absolutely as long as possible, in the hopes that the unavoidable could be avoided...just IMHO...

Bush had better ditch the U.N. right now and attack -- change the equation quickly -- or he's dead meat, politically. The problem is, I don't think this was his plan at all, I'm not so sure he was prepared to go without U.N. cover. We'll see.

Scott, rest easy. Bush has no choice but to tell the UN to stuff it, and to then do what must be done. For one thing, he (and the US) will be a total laughingstock if he doesn't. This is serious stuff - his credibility as the US president and the country's credibility would be destroyed, and this would dramatically increase the danger level in international affairs. What do you think that North Korea would do if we chicken out in Iraq now? How many other terror-supporting nations will learn the lesson that the US is a paper tiger? If W messes this up, we can expect to have one or more American cities turned into mushroom clouds within the next 2 or 3 years. Second, and less importantly for the country, Bush would be a guaranteed loser in the next election.

Caving in is something that will only happen to Saddam's bunker. GWB is deadly serious - he means what he says. Iraq is dead meat unless they start dragging out LOTS of weapons to public squares, NOW. Last night was the offer of the last chance - and Iraq probably has less than 10 days to accept that offer.

I honestly believe George W. Bush doens't give one flip whether this works for him politically.

He's doing what he thinks is right to protect this nation.

Now after the european weanies, commies and peaceniks have beat up on Bush, its time for the dems to pile on. Dems are scared of national security issues and only attack when they have political cover. They're cowards.

I'm not yet convinced he's decided to go without U.N. acquiescence, even though I think it is political death for him if he doesn't attack now.

Then, like the French, the Germans and Iraq, you haven't been listening.

Sure bothers me for a member or members of the United States Senate can not back their President when the nation is having a face off with the world. Seems to me that they are giving aid and comfort to the enemy and should be held accountable.

"opposition to President Bush’s policy"

The operative words for the Demorats these days. It's going to be fun watching them try and recover after Iraq is liberated.

Let's see...how can I put this without coming across as being indifferent to another attack on an American city...

Bush winning the next election IS JUST AS IMPORTANT FOR THE COUNTRY, as the impact of another attack. He, his administration, the Republicans, Conservatives, etc., are the roadblock in place, holding the liberal, socialist, anti-American (dare I say...), Democrat leadership (Clintons, Dashle, Leahy, Schumer, McAuliffe, and all the other lying, weaseling, sneaky, slithering, slimy obstructionists) from taking this constitutional republic down the road to total demise!

Bothers me too, tremendously (...can't tell you how angered I am about their obstruction in the Senate with the Estrada nomination...I'll save that for another thread) -- but this is no surprise coming from the likes of the current democrat party leadership. They have pursued every opportunity to obstruct this President; they cannot stand him...and I believe it's that they CANNOT STAND HIM, personally...not just his politics. They are so incensed over the 2000 election; incensed that they are no longer in control (although you wouldn't know it by what's been happening in the Senate). They don't even bother trying to hide their bias any more, nor their disrespect, their repugnance, their disdain for this President. I have to give President Bush great credit for just being able to stand in the same room with some of these despicable human beings....and I include MOST of the so-called "mainstream" media in with this despicable bunch!

Those countries, as well as I, have indeed been listening. The problem is that is all they (or I) have had to do is listen. After a certain point more words, however cleverly phrased, don't help. Only action will change this equation, and while the President has used many words (all of them containing caveats like "if necessary" or "if Saddam fails to take advantage of this last chance"), he has not demonstrated his will with action. They think the President is bluffing. Why do you think they've hardened their position recently?

We've all listened as he's continued to allow himself to be strung along, as he's acquiesced to delay after delay, as he's been handed unexpected defeats diplomatically (Turkey).

I don't know if he's bluffing or not -- I wouldn't presume to know his mind -- but I do know that from his opponent's standpoint he looks like he's bluffing. And that encourages them to harden their positions and dare him to action that they think he's not prepared to take.

I believe the President wanted the U.N. to make itself relevant again, what with things like N.Korea looming and the Iran nuclear advent looming. What has happened in the intervening weeks since Powell went for #1441 resolution has been the delibereate build up of our forces. we are just about ready to go in. A little know piece of data for you folks: our military has a new biochemical protection suit that is being shipped to our troops, as we discuss this! By March 17, Saddam will be on our hit list and by March 19 he will be a bad footnote in history ... that's if soemone doesn't feed to him a few lead pellets before March 17.
