Peggy Noonan: Oh Happy Day
Opinion Journal ^ | 03/10/03 | Peggy Noonan

Edited on 04/23/2004 12:05:23 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

It's a beat-up little suburban single-story house in a Third World place far away. Faded blue paint on the outside, broken bicycle on a cracked cement walkway, rusty fence. You wouldn't think twice if you drove by. It wasn't interestingly decrepit or antique, just modern, cheap and fallen down.

Peggy can make me cry like no other writer. She does it on purpose: makes people cry. I would be more tongue-tied upon meeting her than meeting the president.

Thats what I first thought but on re read it brings the humanity of the whole thing home ...we forget Hitler put his pants on one leg at a time as did the people who died putting him and his monstrous regime 6 feet under

Except Jersey Man should have been listening to Ted Nugent.

it brings the humanity of the whole thing home

Sorry, this is just weird fantasizing. If she wants to bring the "humanity" of it "home" (whatever that means), let her tell the tale - after it actually happens.

Great Peggy! I think you are wrong. Tom Sizemore debates about playing the only CD he has...the CD "the old guy" gave him. It wasn't his choice, it was all he had and he wanted music, any music to mark the moment.

Peggy always makes me cry, she knows how to get me every time. What a great article.

She left out Osama's little friend, stuffed "Bert" from Sesame Street.

Really, he don't leave home without it!

Did you go back and reread it? I know;>) I am reading too much into the article. Peggy makes me dig deep.

Grenada, West Indies. When I first joined FR, I was living in....Grenada. Then, as it is now, FR was my bastion of sanity. I live in New Orleans now. Truthfully, Grenada and New Orleans are quite similiar.

Oh, I have no doubt this piece would garner a respectable grade in "Creative Writing 101." However, Noonan is a fine professional writer, and this is the Wall Street Journal. The bar is quite a bit higher. She misses.

I loved this piece

I did too. It does add humanity to this whole situation. I really don't mind if it is called a creative writing 101 exercise

I know that if I were one of those commanders and I was in that position, I would be blasting some heart pumping Rock & Roll like Ted Nugent or on second thought for irony, I would have blasted a Barabara Streisand tune.

Keeping with the tone of the article "Sky Pilot", but what do I know.

I have never hired by enron as a consultant.

Not that I mind reading what she has to say about liberals, and abortion, and Catholicism all the time, but this was a welcome break with tradition anyway.

Peggy is like a lot of us. As you get older you lose touch with pop culture. Why wouldn't a guy from Jersey actually be listening to Springsteen.

You didn't read it carefully! The guy from Jersey was playing something that belonged to the 'Old Man'. The lyrics sure seemed to fit!

Neither was she, she did a quick job for them, they didn't like it, she went her merry way. She's talked about it before. She made public her supposed 'ties' to Enron when others who were closely involved with the company did not, but still continued writing supposed objective news stories about them.

Quit trying to minimize her efforts by smearing her with some corporate bashing brush.
