Ex-Clinton aide reveals Bill lost the nuclear codes
U. S. News and World Report ^ | 03/15/2003 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 03/15/2003 8:58:30 AM PST by GeneD

Former President Clinton lost the codes to nuclear war the day the Monica Lewinsky affair broke, was MIA in the fall of 1998 when a decision was needed on the killing of Osama bin Laden, and was "too busy watching a golf match" to OK a 1996 bombing mission in Iraq, says a blockbuster new book by Clinton's former military aide. Lt. Col. Robert Patterson, who carried the nuclear "football" from May 1996 to May 1998, crosses a line no other "mil aide" has before in condemning his commander in chief in Dereliction of Duty: The Eyewitness Account of How Bill Clinton Compromised America's National Security. "This story had to be told." But a Clinton national security aide, William Danvers, tells us Clinton was never "unavailable for key" decisions and didn't jeopardize U.S. security. One story: The day the Lewinsky scandal broke, Clinton was to trade in his "biscuit" with the nuclear launch codes. But they were missing. "We never did get them back," says Patterson. Then there's bin Laden: Clinton ducked calls from the Situation Room to ok a Tomahawk attack in 1998, then waffled until it was too late.

Where was 'Buzz' when this was going down? He shoulda dropped the dime on Bubba when it really counted.

I'm glad he finally wrote the book, though.

Imus just might interview the guy.....seems his (Imus) love for Bubba has waned.

Sounds like a book I need to read.

Just one more to add to my "Clinton Library".... It will join titles such as: Slick Willie I & II, High Crimes and Misdemeanors (The case against Bill Clinton, by Ann Coulter), The Starr Report, Hell to Pay (by our beloved and sorely missed FReeper, Barbara Olson), The Case Against Hillary Clinton (Peggy Noonan), Year of the Rat : How Bill Clinton Compromised U.S. Security for Chinese Cash (by Edward Timperlake, et al), Betrayal : How the Clinton Administration Undermined American Security (by Bill Gertz), etc. etc. etc.

Cheers, CC :)

OK. Somebody help me put this into perspective. What exactly do the codes do? Are they to verify that the person ordering the strike is indeed the president? Is the "biscuit" the thing these codes are stored on? Do the codes change on a schedule, explaining why he is talking about trading in the biscuit, or if somebody steals the biscuit, can they start a war?

Not that I am defending the slimey-one, but I would hate to over-react to this. We tend to have that reputation, here.

This guy just might be credible enough to weather the storm.

Even if he's squeaky, they'll just make stuff up. I assume that the guy to carry the football would be one of the most investigated, checked, anal-probed guys on earth. I bet he's clean.

I would love to get this book for my father. I would need a large print edition. I searched Amazon and couldn't find anything about one. Does the large print editions usually come later on?

It's a tough call, but I'm beginning to think that Carter was the worst president in American history.

When his Liebury is complete, can we test another MOAB on it? Just to make sure it is working okay? Preferably, with both Clintons inside.

I am sure the mainstream MEDIA will NOT touch this story, save Fox News and Talk Radio.

This is U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT! That's about as 'mainstream' as it gets.

This author has credibility galore. If he didn't, this book would not have seen publication, and it certainly wouldn't be being written about in this publication.

This is devastating for the Clintons.

One nice thing about them NOT being in power is that they don't have the resources of the entire US Government to lean on when they attempt to smear people, nor do they have the automatic attention of the press just because they want to say something. And even if the press gives them attention, it's not at the same level as if it came from the Oval Office (or orifice, in Clinton's case).

They also have to deal with the altermative media, which though by no means dominant, has a lot more influence now than 5 years ago.

Also, being a military guy, I would think the author did extensive opposition research on HIMSELF before releasing the book.

But a Clinton national security aide, William Danvers, lying to cover Clinton's ass, tells us Clinton was never "unavailable for key" decisions and didn't jeopardize U.S. security.

Add from spokesman: "Well, he wasn't exactly 'unavailable'. Actually, he WAS there, technically speaking, that is. You know, somebody can be 'available' if they aren't there, physically, and even if they are. So he was never actually 'unavailable' even though he may have been there, or even if he wasn't. We hope this clears things up."

If you have some patience and your father has a computer, maybe you can wait a couple of months for the e-book. I think with an e-book you have control over the size of the fonts, or the page, or both.

I can't find anything about a large-print edition either. (The book doesn't even appear yet on Regnery's own site.) My best hunch is that you should e-mail Regnery at editorial@regnery.com.

You're so right - and I believe x42's constant negative spewing has come home to roost.

These people believe they can do anything with impunity - their lust for power has blinded them to reality.

Yes, one is really never alone if there is at least one other person somewhere in the universe.
