Patriots Rally for America V: Liberty Weekend in Washington DC Sunday March 23
March 16, 2003 | DC Chapter

PATRIOTS RALLY FOR AMERICA V: Liberty Weekend in DC March 23

The D.C. Chapter of Free Republic invites all patriotic Americans, including Freepers and lurkers in good standing, to join us at the east front steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC Sunday, March 23, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to Rally for America.

This rally is organized by the DC Chapter of Free Republic as a part of the Free Republic community and is held in conjunction with Free Republic Network's rallies nationwide next weekend.

We will be making a patriotic moral stand against the marchers' anti-Americanism and willful silence about the barbaric, terrorist regime of Saddam Hussein.

We will also be sending a message of support to our men and women in uniform fighting the war on terrorism overseas and on the home-front.

Bring your American flags and show our troops -- including the many active duty military that may be hard at work at the Pentagon and other places in our immediate community -- that we support and respect their hard work.

When: Sunday, March 23rd, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Lincoln Memorial, the foot of the east steps (facing the reflecting pool and monument)

Directions: Closest Metro stop is Foggy Bottom on the orange line. Detailed driving directions for people coming from out of town will be posted below in this thread.

Rules: We have obtained the proper permits for this peaceful rally and we do not expect any counterprotests. As always, the D.C. Chapter's rules for protesting will be in effect. Briefly, they are: No violence, no profanity, no racism, no provocations, obey the law and treat all law enforcement officers with respect.

Bring: American and Gadsden flags (large and small), along with signs bearing messages supporting our troops, President Bush, America and the war on terror.

Weather: Too soon to tell, but it's been beautiful here recently. Mostly sunny, temps in the low 60s, this weekend. Cherry Blossom Festival will be upon us next weekend, although the trees may not yet be in full bloom.

If you're coming from out of town, send any message/question you have to our out-of-town contact guide for this rally (that would be me, FreeTheHostages).

We had a great rally this last weekend and gots lots of national news broadcasts to our beloved troops that we support them. Let's do it again! Do it for the Troops!

Wow, so soon after our last rally, huh? Don't put away those American flags just yet! I just had to get this announcement up. When the cat's away (attending today's Philly rally), the mice will play.

This is a great location for a rally. Parking is available around the Mall, but Metro is best. BTW, Foggy Bottom Metro station is served by the Blue and Orange lines. For more info about public transportation, Click Here.

Thanks, Kristinn. You beat me to it. (I was drafting a Freepmail to a certain someone pleading for him to do us a nice eagle graphic for our own rally -- I had to borrow the Liberty Weekend one but I'd love to have our own Patriots Rally V.

Thanks for posting the announcement for Patriots Rally for America V (and for everything else you do even when you are not feeling well).

Let's get as many people as we can out to support our troops, President Bush and this great country we all love and make the weekend of March 22-23 a huge RALLY FOR AMERICA.

Lincoln Memorial itself will have inspirational guidance on our national situation.
We can succeed only by concert. It is not "can any of us imagine better?" but, "can we all do better?" The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occassion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. . . . Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. . . . The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.
-- Abraham Lincoln, December 1, 1862 Message to Congress

My Heart and Soul will be with you guys and gals. But my body will be flying out on JetBlue to link up with a cruise ship. Maybe I can rally up the cruise ship people and have a FReepers rally on the ship Monday. I'll be handing out Bush2004 stickers at least.

ROFL! W04man, you remind me *so much* of my Dad, who also had not retired "quietly." :) And you didn't need to tell us you'd be handing out Bush2004 stickers on the cruise: we already *knew* that! :)

Directions from out of town

By car: Interstates 66 and 395 provide access to the Mall from the south. Interstate 495, New York Avenue, Rock Creek Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, and the Cabin John Parkway provide access from the North. Interstate 66, Route 50 and 29 provide access from the West. Routes 50, 1, and 4 provide access from the East. You may want to park in a commercial parking garage north of the mall and then take a lovely walk along the national mall to the west to get to the Lincoln memorial.

Map of site: This pdf map will let you zoom in to see the environs around the Lincoln memorial, which is the center (just to the left and lower) of the map, near the Potomac River. http://www.nps.gov/linc/ppmaps/namamap1.pdf

By metro: You may want to park elsewhere and then just take the Metro to the Foggy Bottom stop(orange and blue line). Then walk south about 6 blocks -- you'll go past the Vietnam memorial on the way to the Lincoln memorial if you proceed south on 22nd street or thereabouts.

The Lincoln Memorial is a lovely place for a Support Our Troops rally.

It is a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln and the nation he fought to preserve during the Civil War (1861-1865).

The Lincoln Memorial was built to resemble a Greek temple. It has 36 Doric columns, one for each state at the time of Lincoln’s death. A sculpture by Daniel Chester French of a seated Lincoln is in the center of the memorial chamber.

Inscribed on the south wall of the monument is the Gettysburg Address. Above it is a mural painted by Jules Guerin depicting the angel of truth freeing a slave. Guerin also painted the unity of North and South mural on the north wall. Etched into the north wall below the mural is Lincoln’s second inaugural speech.

It will be open during the rally, absent some security precaution in the event of war. It's normal hours are 8 a.m. to midnight. It is located on 23rd Street, NW, just against the Potomac River. Its facilities include exhibits, a bookstore, restrooms, and concessions where you'll be able to get things like water, hot dogs, and ice cream. This is a family friendly venue.

I will be in Richmond next Sunday. Some members of our Church want to go. I am making up a sign with this on the top of it.

God Bless the USA!

It will look something like that.

I assume from our website you have a list of email people that normally you would set about notifying. We've got a lot of new contacts recently. Would it be a fair statement that we should get together a committee of 3 or 4 and have a set of administrative tasks assigned to so that the administrative work doesn't fall just to you or me? I volunteer for membership.

Sorry I missed you today. I had a free morning for a change, so I went looking here for today's Freep plans. Finding nothing, I headed downtown anyway, just to see what I might find. When I saw the commotion along PA Ave, I figured there must be sumthin' up... I was thrilled to see the Saint Patrick's parade!

I headed out of town at 1:30 so as to listen to the President on my way out.

I ended up yesterday evening in Columbia, MD after work to help a friend move. I had an hour to kill before he arrived, so I wandered about. I came across two young hippie-wannabe's carrying a sign. "Where's the protest, dude?" I asked. "Dude, they're a bunch of professors from the college up the street." [Howard County Community College]. When I found them, around 5:30, they were breaking up. I decided to join them, anyway, to see what fun I could have. By the time I parked and got over, they were all gone. So I held a one-man Freep. I wrote out "Go USA! Go Bush" on the back of a cardboard shirt box.

No sooner than my little sign was up and I got the middle finger from some girl, about college age. That was the only one for my 45-minute freep. The rest of the time was all honks and thumbs up.

A skateboard carrying 15-year old kid showed up and started to chat. He was of the indoctrinated, but he was very bright and attentive. Poor kid, he got a thirty-minute Nicollo lecture on American history and geo-politics. I brought him round from the reason the condos across the street are ugly and McDonald's are everywhere, to why we're going to war (answer: because the American people will it). Getting there we visited the American Founding, Alexis de Tocqueville, the Civil War, the Civil Rights movement, the Cold War, and the distrous whatz-hiz-name President from the mid-1990s. At the end, the kid said, "Thanks for a different perspective." I hope he takes it to heart, if just a little bit.

Sorry I missed you guys at the Lincoln. What a place to be on this beautiful day!

You are not the first one to admire it. I wish I could remember where I got it, it just kinda fell in my lap.

:) You're entitled to your opinion. I personally think he's a great American hero. But even if you don't like him, he was a great orator. And those words ring true in our time.

Wow, sounds like a great FReep of one!

Nope, you didn't miss us at the Lincoln Memorial. We'll be having that Freep next Sunday at 1 p.m. (It's my personal hope that we'll at least see the beginning of some cherry blossoms, but they may come out later this year, they say.)

So come join us next weekend and keep up the good work! We speak for the majority of our citizens.

Hey, Angelwood, I'm getting some Freepmails about parking, and I'm telling out-of-towners its best to park in one of the commercial parking garages in city central north of the mall and then walk or cab to the Lincoln Memorial. Especially since this is Cherry Blossom weekend. Do you guys think this is good advice? Is there anything more specific we want to say on parking?

Some great quotes from Lincoln, apropos of nothing:

No matter how much cats fight, there always seems to be plenty of kittens.

The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.

No man is good enough to govern another man without the other's consent.

What a quotable guy Lincoln was:

What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself.

If I care to listen to every criticism, let alone act on them, then this shop may as well be closed for all other businesses. I have learned to do my best, and if the end result is good then I do not care for any criticism, but if the end result is not good, then even the praise of ten angels would not make the difference.

Seriously, do you have some woman's work of the administrative variety that you want to pass on to me? I'm back in the game and well, we women have to do the work, y'know. :)
"I have never studied the art of paying compliments to women; but I must say that if all that has been said by orators and poets since the creation of the world in praise of women were applied to the women of America, it would not do them justice for their conduct during this war. I will close by saying, God bless the women of America!"

I see in the news that President Bush may give Saddam a 72-hour ultimatem or thereabouts. I imagine the Mall might have special security during wartime. People shouldn't be bringing large, unwrapped packages to the rally and such, and they should be willing and prepared for any extra security checks LEO want to do if they go up to visit the Lincoln Memorial itself.

My best suggestion for parking for the out-of-towners -- don't. Instead, hit the the Metro's website and find out which Metro stops have parking garages. I know for a fact that Vienna/Fairfax and New Carrollton do, and I suspect Shady Grove does as well. Park there and Metro in. I mean it -- driving in D.C. is bad on the best of days and between the rally and the Cherry Blossom festival, you'll save yourself a lot of grey hairs taking Metro.

It looks like we'll be going to war Wednesday night. The leftists will have a spasm early on while we're at work. Sunday will be a great day for us to show our support for American men and women in harms way.

Please let your friends, family, co-workers and e-mail chains know about this rally. This is for the troops.
