Texas Republican Party Platform Thread 143 (Teacher Insurance Funding)
Brown County GOP Website ^ | June, 2002 | Republican Party of Texas

The Republican Party of Texas Platform has been MUCH in the news of late because it is a CONSERVATIVE document and, as such, VERY controversial. I thought it would be an instructive exercise, for those of us who wish to do so here, to go through it plank by plank and see where we stand on these issues. Pursuant to that, I will post ONE plank of the Platform, every few days and anyone who wishes to can state their views as to that particular part of the platform.

Today, under the heading Strengthening The Economy Of Texas And America we find the following plank :

Teacher Insurance Funding - The Party opposes the state's taking over the responsibility of providing insurance for public school employees. These employees are not employees of the state, but of the local school districts. The benefits and the costs of providing those benefits should be determined and paid for by the employer of those employees, the local school district, which ultimately is responsible to the local community for its actions.

I have decided to score myself by assigning a score of between 0 and 10 points to each of the planks! 10 means I agree with EVERYTHING in it. 0 means I agree with NOTHING in it.

I KNOW this one is controversial but I agree with it!

10 more points brings my running score to this point to 1296 of a possible 1430. (One more and WE ARE DONE!)

I concur with it. I tried in vain to prevent the state from instituting this program.

The state only pays a $1000 a year toward each teacher's insurance. There are plenty of other areas that could be cut before this.

Teachers are certified by the state, so that makes them at least quasi-state employees.
