WILL THE REAL TURKEY STAND UP?

Which is it? Airspace and airbases? Airspace alone? Chance of airbases? Both? Either Or?

Come on, Turks. We’re in a war. Time’s a premium.

Recep Tayyp Erdogan, Turkish Prime Minister, stated to media on Wednesday that his country will indeed not permit the use of its military bases by the United States. However, Turkey will permit the use of its airspace for US military attacks against Iraq.

So now you have it. Right?

Not quite. There is yet parliamentary approval needed concerning Turkey’s airspace. Okay. So then Erdogan’s promise is yet to be a time span away, that is, we have to wait for parliament to discuss the matter. All the while, it could be that the US-led troops would be a quarter of the way through the war, half way through the war, a fifth of the way through the war, or by the time parliamentary discussion comes to a vote, the war could be over. Right? Right.

Got it? Clear, isn’t it?

Not quite. On Wednesday at a press meeting, Turkish Justice Minister Cemil Cicek, an official voice for the Turkish government, said that his country would allow US warplanes to enter Iraq via Turkish bases. Clear? Not.

Erdogan underlined that that chance is a negative. Turkey, he said, will not allow its bases for US even for refueling. So there. The decisive word has been penned to paper.

According to the Kyodo News, an understatement was printed. KN stated that “Turkey and the US appear to be having difficulties working out a US aid package in return of the use of military bases.” Oh, so that’s the hitch, is it? A US aid package in return of the use of military bases.

I wonder if Erdogan and Cicek realize that as the nub of the “difficulties.”

Oh, how easy it all could be for the US-led militia. If Turkey did permit the use of airspace, US warplanes parked in nations like Romania would reach Iraq “at the minimum distance.”

Yet, to make simple matters difficult, the Turks late February agreed to accept the max of 62,000 US troops, 255 warplanes and 65 helicopters for six months. But that agenda was sliced through on March 1 after an outcry from legislators doused it. The ruling Justice and Development Party said Nix.

So, now you have it — plain and simple.

Mrs. Smith was a hypochondriac. Dr. Jones was fed up with her constant
complaints about non-existent illnesses, so he started palming her off with
a mild sedative to keep her happy.

One day she complained about chest pains and the doctor prescribed his usual
treatment. This time however, the pain was real and Mrs. Smith died of a
heart attack.

On hearing of her death, Dr. Jones was so upset he died of shock. Mrs.
Smith and Dr. Jones were buried next to each other in the cemetery.

The next morning, Dr. Jones heard a tapping on his coffin, followed by a
voice saying, "Dr. Jones, this is Mrs. Smith. Do you have anything for
worms?"

The temperature had taken an overnight plunge, and Minnesota yet again
affirmed its reputation as one of the nation's coldest states.

Despite a wind chill of minus 40, we steelworkers erecting a TV tower in a
Minneapolis-St. Paul suburb, showed up for work. By 9AM a tall Texan climbed
down from the tower and entered the office trailer. He took his lunch pail
from the shelf and headed for the door.

"What's up?" the foreman asked. "You sick?"

"Nope," the Texan replied. "Goin' home to get my jacket."

"Where's home?" the foreman persisted.

"Dallas," said he.

A Final Thought ...

"I never failed to convince an audience that the best thing they could
do was to go away."

- Thomas Love Peacock (1785-1866), English author
