Iraq is the least explored, least developed of the Mideast oil states. Not since the 1970s, using now-antiquated techniques, has an inventory of its oil reserves even been taken. Even so, Iraq is reckoned to possess 120 billion barrels in proven reserves, second only to Saudi Arabia's 250 billion barrels.

Iraqi exile nationalists insist it would be compromising to a new government to be seen favoring U.S. and British oil companies.

No it wouldn't. It would be viewed as legitimate payment for their liberation. If France, Germany, or Russia wanted to pout about it, it would take a simple reminder of the a past 3 months to put them in their place. Screw 'em.

Actually, what Chalabi (head of Iraqi opposition in exile) said recently was somewhat different. If the U.S. took over administration of Iraq, he said, people would claim favoritism if even 10 percent of the oil contracts were to go to U.S. companies. But if a government formed by Iraqis were allowed to form, then nobody would bat an eyelid if 50 percent of the business went to the U.S.

Quite a display of moral blackmail, actually, although of course cleverly wrapped in "helpful advice". As someone else wrote, Chalabi thinks he can pull a de Gaulle and ride into Baghdad behind Allied tanks.

I hope Colin Powell slapped the ungrateful so-and-so down afterward.

Anyway, merely replacing Chirac and the CEOs of French oil companies isn't enough. I believe I am more lenient towards the French than most Freepers are; however, now that they have gone and carried out their obstructionism to the max, I feel that their punishment needs to be severe. In other words, hit them in the portemonnaie, where it hurts!
