Capitol Hill Blue Sold

Capitol Hill Blue, the oldest daily news site on the Internet, has been sold to a group of working Washington journalists.

Doug Thompson Media, owner and operator of the web site since its debut on the Web on October 1, 1994, announced today that it has agreed to sell the site to Capitol Hill Journalism Partnership.

"Capitol Hill Blue is a pioneer in web-based journalism," said partnership spokesman William J. Lowrey. "We intend to honor that tradition and improve upon it."

The partnership is composed of working, Washington-based journalists who work for print, broadcast and web-based media outlets.

"We intend to use Blue as a test bed for new techniques and concepts for web journalism," Lowrey said.

Capitol Hill Blue first appeared on the web on October 1, 1994, as a one-page weekly newsletter published by veteran journalist Doug Thompson. He expanded publication to daily on January 1, 1995, and the site gained fame during the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals of the Clinton administration.

Thompson left the publication earlier this month to pursue new opportunities.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The new owners will take control of the web site on April 1, 2003.

I don't recall anything in The Who song about McAwful or Carville. Fred Flintstone either, for that matter, although I find that parallel to be less offensive. Why you would compare me to Democrat muckrakers is beyond me. Perhaps you can elucidate a bit. It might be educational.

How did I come to be involved in this fiasco? I was reading a thread, and something set my proverbial spider-sense tingling. So I posted a challenge to the person who put the thread up and was taking it at face value. The discussion went from there. Probably, had not so many people been on the thread seemingly pushing Thompson's story, I never would have pulled the string. But I did, and found nothing to make me think there is a Terrance Wilkinson, I posted a thread about it and made a blog entry about it, and everything unfolded from there. If you follow up from that post on my blog, you can get a pretty good feel for how things flowed.

You are way off base by insinuating William is anyone other than who he is.

So instead of insinuating I am drinking (drunk) because I question who is who and what, in this CHB fiasco, post your reasoning/facts for the above statement instead of thanking gawwd you are going to go get your nails done.

I think it would be far more "educational" if you perhaps could elucidate on the above selling of CHB statements. WHO OWNS Capitol Hill Blue at the present time? Who was the deceptive party in this fiasco?

And what exactly does this mean?

"We intend to use Blue as a test bed for new techniques and concepts for web journalism," Lowrey said.

Thank-you, for your time in response.I will go read the links you posted to possibly start to answer my questions figuring out this fiasco.

Seeing as you have found two threads I posted some months ago, it appears to me you have at least looked at what I post and what I say. Perhaps you can share what it is about me that has you suspicious of me? I am curious.

Is it my choice of screen name? I'll defend McKinley any day of the week and twice on Tuesdays.

Is it something in my opinions expressed on Free Republic? If so, challenge me on them, here or on those threads.

Is it the type of Free Republic thread I prefer?

Is it something from my blog?

Bueller? Bueller?

"The American Spectator was sold?"

The Spectator is back, in all it's cynical glory. You may know this already, but for anyone who doesn't and missed it, check it out. At the same old address www.spectator.org

Also back from cyber-limbo is the wonderful word game ACROPHOBIA. I highly reccomend it to all. Chat with lovely folks (for the most part) while you make up phrases based on radom letters and catagories. For example, catagory: Politics, letters: IHH possible winning answer: I Hate Hillary! currently available at www.flipside.com Registration required to play, I believe.

Do you have any info about William J. Lowrey other than the ID above? I couldn't find him on Google.

I think it would be far more "educational" if you perhaps could elucidate on the above selling of CHB statements. WHO OWNS Capitol Hill Blue at the present time? Who was the deceptive party in this fiasco?...

And what exactly does this mean?

"We intend to use Blue as a test bed for new techniques and concepts for web journalism," Lowrey said.

Brings to mind the U2 lyrics, If I could, you know I would If I could, I would. I am confused why you think I would know this, any more than you would. I am not associated with CHB, and had never even visited that website until I started getting suspicious about the article which I saw posted here.

Who owns CHB? I have no clue, other than a recent statement where Doug Thompson said he is still the editor (posted to the Madman thread), and his statements on these threads that make it sound like he is still running it, and the DNS records for the domain name which still list him as the owner. My best guess is that Doug Thompson owns it.

What does that imply about the "Sold" story? Either the sale fell through, or it did not and Doug still gets to run the place. I have no idea which.

As for the comment by 'Lowery' about 'new techniques', I have no idea. I cannot read minds, especially of people I have never met, know nothing about, and am not even sure exist.

Since I have answered your questions to the best of my ability, how about returning the favor. Why on earth do you seem to be under the impression that I am associated in any way, shape, or form with Capitol Hill Blue?

I do not. There apparently are or has been more than one William J. Lowery. I do not know if the above one is the same one (and I said so up there), and I do not know if the person Thompson quoted is really named William J. Lowery, and I do not know if the person Thompson quoted even exists.

Everyone's guess is as good as mine.

Doug has said in some of these threads (not sure where, sorry), and he has said to me in emails, that he will not be answering any questions at the advice of an attorney, and if he did it would be an exclusive for his own website.

Convenient, eh?

Well, I don't know how you could get confused. I mean we have Wilson and Wilkinson, Thomspson who may or may not own Capitol Hill Blue, on-again off-again sales, a site owned by someone that we aren't sure about, unnamed sources, truthout.org (not to be confused with moveout.org), and about a gazillion posters all chiming in on Free Republic. I myself am having trouble keeping track without a written list. Ha!

And I am supposed to be out weeding the yard, and thus must go for a while. Perhaps while I am pulling out thistles and dandelions I will be struck with inspiration about this mystery.

Before I leave, this "advice of an attorney" thing is really strange. Thompson has things posted on his web site, and he has posted stuff here which is archived. Why all of a sudden the secrecy?

Seems to me that there is something we are missing, or at least something he doesn't want us to discover.

Donning my tin-foil chapeau, I now am going out to weed and think.

I hear ya and get why Thompson is scape-goating and hiding behind his lawyer but every journalist is due a retraction, Thompson apparently did... so what is the problem in him explaining more he retracted, why does he need a lawyer?

And don't forget the aptly named misleader.org

Actually, their web names are hilarious. Truthout, where the truth is out the window. Misleader, no one misleads better than them.

Seems to me that there is something we are missing, or at least something he doesn't want us to discover.

Doug Thompson says that he has pulled six Capitol Hill Blue articles because they were based on Wilkinson as a source.

Do you know what those six articles were? Did any of them appear on FreeRepublic? (They might still be in Google's cache too, although they'll undoubtedly disappear soon.)

Knowing what disinformation or information Wilkinson fed Thompson earlier could be quite revealing.

[Maybe someone has already posted what the six stories were? The threads on this topic are long, and I could easily have missed it.]
