Group Says It Will Keep Up Fight If Holiday Swap Is Approved
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The leaders of the Greenville County NAACP said Friday that they will not accept a compromise proposal on establishing a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in the county.
A committee appointed by County Council recommended two plans Wednesday, one that would add a new King holiday for workers and one that would replace an existing holiday with a King observance.
On Friday, Greenville National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President Paul Guy, flanked by the chapter's executive committee, said that his group will continue to fight unless the county adopts the new holiday.
Guy said that the county should join the city of Greenville and the state in creating an additional holiday honoring King.
The county's decision will determine the perception of Greenville for years to come, Guy said.

I don't see what the problem is. I think an MLK Civil Rights Day would be fine, why the necessity for it to be an extra holiday? I'd like to see kids taught more about civil rights than just MLK. I'd also like to see them taught something about civic responsibility, ethics, and morality and their relationship to civil rights.

You don't dare overlook Mao's birthday in China, and you'd d*mn well better not overlook King's birthday in the U.S.

I'm not sure what their beef is? Isn't it already a federal holiday? Not that it bothers me any since I've never worked for a company that gave it as a day off.

NAACP doesn't compromise. They're interested in getting their way, and they'll use scorched earth tactics if necessary.
I'm waiting for the day someone stands up and calls THEM racist.

The report left out the fact that there are some on County Council, according to WYFF TV News reports, that won't vote for any of the Plans that include "MLK" in the verbiage.
Perhaps the County Council should pass a Civil Rights Day Resolution. They could assign a certain day in January to observe this special Day, if the County Employees so choose.
If the County Employees choose to celebrate this Day, then they will be using one of their "floating holidays" to do so. If the County Employees choose to come to work to honor Civil Rights on that Day, they may do so.

I would like to be around when these individuals explain to the Hispanics that the money for reparations will come from money Hispanics are paying in taxes.

How about this. Extend Abraham Lincoln's birthday to 2 days, he's the guy who freed the slaves. Oops, this is Dixie, that won't fly either...

They're already boycotting your entire state...what more can they do? It seems to me you've got them by the shorthairs.

If I am not mistaken, King has a national holiday, and here in west Tennessee, he has an extra holiday for school kids.
Geesh, he has more then Christ!
Maybe they should just declare a whole month for him. Thats what they would really like.

I really don't understand the nitpicking, but apparently they want an official no-work paid holiday, which the county says it can't afford.
As for the month, already a month has been appropriated that kids learn next to nothing (anyone who thinks they actually learn any Black history during Black History Month is sadly mistaken).
