WASHINGTON (AP) -President Bush will travel to California next week to talk about the economy and national security and spend the night on an aircraft carrier as it returns from the war in Iraq, the White House announced today.

Bush will fly to San Diego and make a speech Thursday aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for nearly nine months, longer than any U.S. carrier group now on duty. On Friday, he will leave the ship and travel to Santa Clara, where he will make remarks on the economy and national security.

If we can't park in the Costco lot, then it'll be tough for us to get to the right location. Brokaw and Coleman will be blocked off for obvious reasons. Foot access is not good getting across those tracks. There are five good looking flags across from the location and that would be ideal for us.

Bus service is also extremely limited. One can catch the 304 Express in the morning to Coleman/Brokaw, but getting back, there's not a southbound bus until the evening commute.

Plan D, then.

Let the protesters Drown like Rats... and watch it all from a pub! ;-)

I am probably going to stake out Moffett Field somewhere.

The airport location is a tough one to work around, let the anti-war nuts have at it.

I don't think the businesses in the area are going to be to thrilled being shut down for a few hours.

Some more info... Another map and also clarification of what section of DelaCruz/Coleman is closed to traffic during the visit.

Per the Mercury News and a small note about the visit and what roads are affected...

Coleman Road will be closed from the 880 Freeway to Reed Street(the d in DeLaCruz Blvd is where Reed St is) which is the street just North of the yellow interlaced roads. Depending on the weather, it may be possible to hoof it in but you are looking at 1/2 mile or so of a hike, that is , if supporters are allowed in.

The red star is the 1205 Coleman address.

This may also mean forget about Moffett as it would appear that AF1 will fly into Mineta San Jose airport directly and not Moffett.

I'm not sure whether the SJC airport can handle a 747 - the minimum runway length Boeing specifies is 10,000 feet, or 8,500 feet with a 10-knot headwind. If I'm remembering correctly, the longest runway at SJC is about 10,000 feet.

AF1 WILL land at Moffett Field.

See advisory below.

The following is a TRaffic Advisory from the San Jose Airport

Airport Logo

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

On Friday, May 2, 2003, President Bush will visit United Defense, which is located in close proximity to the westside of the Airport.

President Bush will arrive at Moffet Field at approximately 9:00 AM. He will be visiting United Defense from approximately 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The following road closures will occur between 8:00 AM and 11:00AM:

  • East and westbound vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Coleman Avenue from Highway 880 to the De la Cruz Boulevard overpass. Off-ramps from Highway 880 to Coleman Avenue will be closed.
  • De la Cruz Boulevard, south of Reed Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Airport staff recommends that passengers and Airport employees plan extra time to get to the Airport during this period. The recommended route to access the Airport is Route 87 to Airport Parkway.

Moffet's just down the street from me here at my office - I can look out the window and see the blimp hangars. What I can't sort out is why he wouldn't just take Highway 101 as a straight shot down from Moffet and get off at the Trimble/De La Cruz exit?

Perhaps they're going up Highway 237 since that tends to have less traffic, and then south on 880 to Coleman. But even that doesn't make much sense, since 880 south of 237 is one of the worst highway bottlenecks in the entire state.

Or maybe this is just a security-related misdirection.

Thanks for keeping me posted. This is getting too complicated for me, I have to confess. Plus, with the traffic closures---I think I might have to pass.

Good luck to any and all who make it!

I just saw the KNTV 5 PM news and they said that DeLaCruz from 101 all the way down to the other end where it turns into Coleman and hits 880 is going to be closed. This conflicts with the Airport info.

I have a feeling waving at AF1 at Moffett may be the best and safest and easiest way to show our support.

Or, as you alluded, it may just be more of the "non-existent" Disinformation Agency at work. ;-)

Keep those little protesters standing around in the rain for nothing. LOL. Whatever happened to compassion? LOL ;-)

There will be other days to show our support as the 2004 elections draw ever closer. The sights of today's landing and reception on the Abraham Lincoln are heart-warming enough.

Besides, the Rats who will be out protesting are in more need of a good drenching then you or I. LOL :-)

Thanks for the info.

Last night or today on Channel 3 or one of the channels, I think they mentioned and showed a Marshall park on Lafayette St as the anti-war yahoos congregating area and said a certain number of them will then be bussed by police to a designated viewing area. I'd like to see 'em load up the whole damn lot and take 'em to Elmwood for a few days. I'm series :-) LOL

I wonder if this is very close to the Bush supporters and their gathering area or the same even? !8-?
