Radio Australia reported the Chinese SARS totals as now 3106 cases and 139 deaths. From AFP:

(snip) China was keeping nearly 9,000 people under quarantine as SARS claimed new victims in Asia and Canada, while Vietnam became the first country to successfully contain an outbreak of the disease.

China reported nine new SARS deaths Monday and 203 new cases, the health ministry said.

The fatalities were recorded in Beijing (three), Hebei (three), Shanxi (one), Inner Mongolia (one) and Gansu (one).

The cumulative nationwide death toll now stands at 139, according to the ministry.

Indonesia also reported its first suspected death from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. (snip)

The new virus first emerged in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong five months ago and has since spread around the world killing nearly 330 people and infecting over 5,000 (snip)

Nearly 8,000 people in Beijing and 128 medical facilities are quarantined in Beijing, the worst hit city in China with at least 67 deaths, while over 1,000 people in the eastern province of Zhejiang have also been isolated.

And after closing down all public entertainment venues in Beijing over the weekend, the authorities in the northern province of inner Mongolia also shut libraries, museums, Internet cafes and cinemas.

The WHO has warned against travel to SARS blackspots Beijing, Guangdong, the northern province of Shanxi, Hong Kong and the Canadian city of Toronto in a bid to prevent further spread of the disease.

But in a positive development, the WHO and the Vietnamese authorities Monday formally declared an outbreak of SARS which killed five people and infected 63 under control after no new cases emerged for 20 days.

(snip) But in Indonesia, which has remained largely free of SARS despite a severe outbreak in its northern neighbour Singapore, the health ministry said a 56-year-old Taiwanese businessman suspected of suffering from the respiratory illness had died.

(snip) Taiwan suffered its first SARS death on Sunday and promptly barred visitors from affected countries. In Singapore, where another two fatalities brought the toll to 21, visitors were banned from public hospitals.

Hong Kong reported 12 more deaths on Sunday, equalling its highest one-day toll, and taking the total death toll in the territory to 133.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the US has successfully contained several outbreaks of SARS.

RE #2

In the mean time, many buildings in Beijing went into lock-down mode to keep suspected SARS patients from venturing out.

BTTT with a math note:

China reported nine new SARS deaths Monday and 203 new cases, the health ministry said.

The new virus first emerged in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong five months ago and has since spread around the world killing nearly 330 people and infecting over 5,000 (snip)

So, as of presstime yesterday there were ~5000 global cases and as of presstime today another 203, or ~5% of the cumulative global total were reported by the Chinee.

Critique my math, blam?

I don't know if it's quite right to say that isolating a single person with probable SARS (as has occurred several times) is "containing an outbreak". Or even two or three. Every definition I've seen of outbreak implies more than one or a few afflicted individuals.
