Well I think im gonna turn in for the night, It looks like this thing isnt going to hit Tulsa, and Fox and MSNBC are refusing to cover the Oklahoma City tornado. There are some storms just starting to develope just south of me in Northern Kansas that might wake me up in an hour or so though.........goodnight all.

Thank God your family is safe. We have a funnel that keeps dropping and retreating in the Jenks-Bixby areaabout 10 miles from where I am.

Right now it looks like this storm is passing to the south in Bixby. I have friends there and swinging north into Broken Arrow. So far, Tulsa not struck by more than heavy rain and quarter sized hail.

At the top it says "DBZ." What's that mean?

"dB" stands for deciBells. A way to express a ratio. 1 bell = log (ratio) so the decible value ( deci meaning 1/10) is 10*log(ratio) where the ratio can be of two things, or of one thing to a standard. Radio and radar folks use dBW, where the "W" means relative to 1 Watt. "Z" is a meausre of reflectivity per unit volume. It has units of square meters per cubic meter (equivalently less instructive, 1/meters) In the case of rain, or snow, or chaff, it's a mesure of how much stuff is in that cubic meter of volume. In this case how much rain. But remember it a logrithmic scale so while 10 DbZ is 10 times more stuff than 0 db (log(1) = 0) 20 db is 100 times more. and 30 dB is 1000 times more. Hope that helps. Had to refresh all that a few years ago when I was modeling the AWACS radar for a simulator/trainer for the back end crew members.

Tulsa has been spared, at least for the moment. Kids out of the bathtub and back in bed. Whew. Weatherman pinpointed our neighborhood for a moment...ugh. I'm exhausted. Thanks to all for the prayers. They worked. Prayers for those still in the path of this storm. It seems to be breaking up a bit. Good night, Freepers. You are all wonderful.

Yes I did., right off the top of my pointy head. Been using the stuff for so long, it would be easier to forget how to tie my shoes, although that time is approaching I'm sure.

BTW, that is a base 10 logrithm. For any fossilised FORTRAN programmers out there, LOG10(). Can't do subscripts here but it's usually written as log10 where the "10" should be a subscript. "Bell" is after Alexander Graham, as in the "baby Bells", which is why it should be capitilised. (Spelling is my weak point, especially at 2 AM) Nite all.

Anybody else still here? Anything else happening with these storms? This once that dropped the tornado earlier is coming closer to home (where my family is) than the others..and it looks to me like it was almost turning a bit south for just a bit...anyway, I'll probably be up watching for a while; please let me know if you are hearing anything else about this on tv (I don't have a tv). Thanks!

Good morning! We all huddled in the back hall for 1/2 hour, but it passed south. What a year already!

Hope everyone else is fine this morning!

Legend has it that Norman is protected by an Indian blessing. My mom nor I have never seen a tornado in Norman itself--though just outside...
