Vincente Fox Calls for More Immigration, to Tell Bush at Upcoming Meeting

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Now that the Iraqi war is over and nearly two years have passed since the September 11 attacks, it is time for the United States and Mexico to focus on immigration issues, Mexican President Vicente Fox (news - web sites) said.

In an interview published in the Washington Post, Fox recalled the death of 19 illegal immigrants from Mexico in a stifling truck trailer earlier this month, saying this was a sign of the need to make the flow of Mexican workers into the United States more "safe and orderly."

"To see people die following their dream is very sad," Fox told the daily in his office in Mexico City. "Something must be done."

He criticized members of the US Congress who consider increased immigration from Mexico a threat to US security, calling their concerns "thinking from 50 years ago", and urged US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) to make good on commitment to normalize the status of an estimated four million illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States.

"It's understandable that the worry exists, but we must be pragmatic and objective in evaluating the situation: No terrorists have come from Mexico, and none has been a Mexican," said Fox.

Fox, who will meet Bush informally this weekend at the meeting of the Group of Eight industrialized nations in Evian, France, said he did not believe Mexico's opposition to the US-led war on Iraq (news - web sites) had caused irreparable damage to US-Mexican relations.

He said Mexico had gone to great lengths to cooperate with the United States on border security and anti-terrorism measures.

Now, he said, "we will be insisting on our priority, which is migration."

Bush and Fox were making progress on immigration rules when the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks put the issue on the back burners.

Fox proposed a "sector-by-sector" approach, first granting work visas to nurses and bilingual teachers, who are in short supply some parts of the United States.

The majority of Mexicans who travel to the United States, Fox said, have "a clear dream to work," adding that they were "reliable people" who have helped drive the successful US economy in recent years.

It's unbelievable that a leader of a nation as large of Mexico would not be ashamed to make such a statement. Why won't Mexico make the effort to straighten out its own system so that it can employ its own citizens? I say that the US needs to clamp down hard on illegal immigration from Mexico, including requiring proof of valid US residency from any company's employees and imposing massive fines on companies who continue to employ illegals.

Could it be that he wants us to assume to costs of caring for these people so that he doesn't have to?

Plus his economy gets cash and the Mexican ruling elite gets increasing political influence in the States.

Whats not to like?

You may wonder what most Americans get in exchange. I mean, besides 1$ a head for lettuce or affordable yard care.

As a whole, there are fewer Mexicans crossing the border, according to a few articles I've read on the news.

I'm sure that certain routes become favorite from time to time, so your neck of the woods might be experiencing an increase, due to the game we play at the border called "wack a mole."

No, but a good deal of them coming illegally from Mexico have been murderers, drug dealers and thieves. Then there are the ones who come here and immediately learn how to suck off of social programs. Emergency rooms aren't easily accessible to American citizens anymore.

Vicente, this country owes you nothing. Fix your own problems and stop trying to shove your criminals and uneducated off on us. We have problems enough of our own; we don't need to import additional ones.

Hey Mr. Fox. When are you sending us your check to reimburse the United States for providing health care, schooling, etc. for all your citizens that you have cast off on us?

Oh, man, my blood pressure is up now! How about fixing your corrupt country so that your people can follow their dreams there, you clymer! You should be ashamed to admit that they have to leave to do well. Keep your people home. We have been freeloaded on enough.

In my humble opion we should just shoot anybody trying to sneek in here and leave their rotting corpseon the border for all to see. For those who are here already put a bounty on their head and let the public deal with it!
I have NO problem with people getting here the right way, but when you get here you have to follow our laws!
Mr.Fox should keep his people there and fix his problems & not want us to fix it for him.
Hire a illigal and loose your company!

OK, for every Mexican citizen admitted to the USA, there must be an American citizen admitted to Mexico with the same rights, including the right to buy land and hold secure title to same.

Excellent idea!

If this were done, in twenty-five years, there would be no Mexico.

In 25 years, there will be no USA.

I've tried explaining this to my friends, how mass birthrates/immigration is the new form of warfare. Imagine if during WW2, instead of fighting wars the germans had just had tons of kids and sent millions of illegal immigrants into smaller neighboring countries. Its conquest without a war, but still conquest.

We are being conquered, invaded, eradicated, destroyed. This is genocide.

How about cleaning up your own country to make it their dream to stay in Mexico?

The Bush administration has not been forceful in controlling our borders - and doesn't seem to give any indication that they are concerned about the illegal situation.

That's true - except when showing such "concern" gives them an excuse to flex some police-state muscle. Other than that, you're right that they're not terribly concerned.

Absolutely correct. Some mega fines for repeat offenders are required along with directorship prohibitions and jail time for personnel managers. This is a ntional disgrace. Look at LA thinking about closing public libraries etc to save $80 MIL but spending $340 million annually on health care for undocumented illegals. It makes me sick

Once there's enough of them here, they won't be our laws anymore. Eventually they will vote (amnesties, fraud, etc) and the laws will become "theirs". It's already like that in California -- one of the major reasons we have the problems we do (the "Latino Caucus" is about 25% of our legislature, even though "Latinos" only make up about 10% of the electorate).

This is the real reason to limit immigration of all kinds. The ultimate goal of the socialists encouraging this immivasion is to bring in enough voters to vote in the kinds of politicians who will change the laws. Limited immigration will make the assimilation process work, because the immigrants will never be a significant portion of the electorate.
