All weekend long, ABC promos warned that Barbara Walters was going to ask Sen. Hillary Clinton some very tough questions last night.Walters didn't disappoint. She began the interview by marveling at the willingness of New York's junior senator to work with her erstwhile critics and then hit her right between the eyes: "Are you a saint?" Walters demanded.
Clinton replied that she is not. But, of course, modesty is one of the qualities of a saint.
So, too, is innocence. And not since Richard Nixon's Checkers speech has there been a more innocent politician on prime-time television.
"You made investments in the commodities market," said Walters. "You dealt in real estate, Whitewater, you worked for the Rose Law Firm, all of which at the time you thought were very innocent. All of these things came back to haunt you. Was there anything you could have done differently?"
No, said the senator. She had emerged from the rough-and-tumble of Arkansas with her virtue intact. She was merely the victim of bad public relations.
But what about the White House years? "There was Travelgate," said Walters, "there was Whitewater, there was the handling of [White House counsel] Vince Foster's death, there was the health care bill, there was everything ... "
Clinton replied beatifically that every aspersion cast against her was "without basis in fact." Her only real regret is that bystanders had been hurt by the calumnies.
Clinton's Christian forbearance was especially apparent in her treatment of her husband. Of course we already knew - through an avalanche of leaks, press releases and magazine excerpts from her new book - that she forgives her husband his marital trespasses. But last night we learned that this forgiveness is not the product of some '60s permissiveness.
In fact, she reached peace with the help of a theologian who explained that her husband was guilty of "sins of weakness."
"I don't think people know how strong your faith is," Walters remarked. "It's all through the book. It must have helped you."
Yes, Clinton replied. "I've relied on prayer ... ultimately I had to get down on my knees and I had to pray and I had to look for answers that only could come to me."
So maybe Barbara Walters was right. Maybe Hillary Clinton is a saint. At the very least, she's got that Old Time Religion.
In fact, not since Jimmy Carter's Sunday-school presidency has there been a Democrat who is so obviously full of it.

With the exception of Pravda on the Hudson ( the N.Y. Times, for those who don't know that phrase ), I doubt that Hitlery! is going to get favorable reviews for her " show ".
Lots of us try to understand Bill and Hillary in terms of a normal marriage. I don't think this abnormal pair ever even contemplated a normal marriage. Marriage under the law is a contract. Bill and Hillary's contract has some very differnet provisions.
The first, and probably the last, time I agree with slick.
The Bible teaches that all who call upon the name of Jesus Christ as their Lord, are Saints .
I guess all those sermons Hillary heard at church never taught that. Or perhaps she doesn't fit those qualifications for saint that God's Word lays down.
Both clintons got what they wanted out of their "deal". He got the trappings (and all the sexual opportunities that went with them) and she got the power, which is what she craved and knew she'd never get on her own.
I do believe hillary! was furious at slick when the Monica thing broke, but only because he was stupid enough to get caught.
That is my opinion too.
Yeah, here's an example of one of those "hardball" questions.
You made investments in the commodities market," said Walters. "You dealt in real estate, Whitewater, you worked for the Rose Law Firm, all of which at the time you thought were very innocent. All of these things came back to haunt you. Was there anything you could have done differently?"
Baba Wawa dismisses it all with the question, no need for much of an answer. Hint for you, Bawa, they weren't innocent!
You are forgetting abc, the network owned by the rat with people traps on both coast.
Reality mode back on... after all, this *is* the mainstream media...
