I recently took my two teenage sons to a talk by Frank Kravetz, a 90-year-old World War II veteran who survived Hitler’s Nuremberg prisons. Frank published his story in a memoir, Eleven Two: One WWII Airman’s Story of Capture, Survival and Freedom. Frank’s ordeal began in November 1944 during a bomb-run over Germany. He took his regular position, crammed into the tail of a B-17. The target was Merseberg, a major industrial area. He flew amid an air armada of 500 heavy bombers—each carrying eighteen 250-pound bombs—escorted by 900 fighter planes. While the Americans were ready for business, so was...

"See the days of pioneer Appalachia brought to life by local families as the Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center hosts two days of living history, with adults and children dressed in 1800s period costumes, showcasing almost every facet of life in these mountains 200 years ago. Cooking simple food in a stone fireplace, crafting wood furniture with hand tools, blacksmithing in a coal-fired forge, one-room schoolhouse classes covering the Appalachian “three Rs” (Readin’, ‘Ritin’, and Religion), short church services, a quilting bee, plenty of old-time kids’ games (everyone is invited to join in), live traditional music — all of these...

Sarah Palin has been using her political action committee to buy up thousands of copies of her book, "Going Rogue," in order to mail copies of the memoir to her donors, newly filed campaign records show. The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate had her political organization spend more than $63,000 on what her reports describe as "books for fundraising donor fulfillment." The payments went to Harper Collins, her publisher, and in some instances to HSP Direct, a Virginia-based direct mail fundraising firm that serves a number of well-known conservative politicians and pundits. When Hillary Clinton said, way back in New Hampshire, that Vladimir Putin "doesn't have a soul," I figured that would be the sort of thing the Russian wouldn't be pleased about. But when I called the foreign ministry the next day for comment, it was Orthodox Christmas, and I let it slide. He was asked about the remark at his press conference yesterday, however, and indeed wasn't pleased. The former KGB lieutenant colonel appeared to lash out at U.S. Sen. Americans Made Here By James Riley As I have told dozens of the teachers who visit our farm, when we first began conducting Revolutionary War field trips on Riley's Farm, I thought we would perform--if we were lucky--perhaps 10 or 20 tours a year. I thought my own passion for 18th century history, and the whole story of universal human rights on display in the story of Lexington and Concord, would have--at best--a limited audience. Hillary Clinton made it personal against President Bush yesterday, accusing him of winning her husband's old job by hiding his "extremist agenda" in 2000. "We've made a hard right turn to pursue an extremist agenda that was certainly not advertised by the campaign President Bush ran," the former first lady, told the Austin (Tex.) American-Statesman. In Texas for a fund-raiser and to sign her book "Living History," Clinton said Bush is trying to undo everything her husband's administration built over eight years. "I took that kind of personally," she said. The Bush policies also cut into years of work by...

A friend of mine just told me that, at the Barnes and Nobles website, if you search out the book written by our most recent former first lady (the one the only Brunhilda), it will indicate that, far from being in the top 100 best sellers for the year, it is listed as 172. This may not be breaking news, but it is certainly important news, IMO.

Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 1:03 p.m. EDTHarry Wu: Hillary's Account of My Release Untrue Human rights activist Harry Wu is accusing New York Sen. Hillary Clinton of inflating the role she played in winning his release from a Chinese jail in 1995. In an interview with WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg, Wu said Sunday that Mrs. Clinton had mischaracterized his past statements by saying he gave her credit for winning his release. In her book "Living History," Mrs. Clinton wrote: "Some media commentators, and Wu himself, were convinced that the United Sates had made a political deal with the Chinese:...

When it was discovered that Chinese censors had fiddled with politically sensitive passages in the translation of Senator Clinton’s autobiographical book, “Living History,” the former first lady said she was “amazed” and “outraged.” That’s exactly how a leading Chinese human rights activist — the same person who figures heavily in the deleted portions — says he felt after reading Mrs. Clinton’s book, which he says presents a misleading portrait of the circumstances behind his release from a Chinese prison in 1995. Harry Wu, the Chinese dissident, is disputing passages from “Living History,” including ones that were censored in China. He...

Hillary Clinton 'outraged' by Chinese censor By David Rennie in Washington and Richard Spencer in Beijing (Filed: 25/09/2003) Senator Hillary Clinton said yesterday she was "amazed and outraged" to learn that the official Chinese edition of her best-selling memoirs has been extensively censored. The former First Lady has demanded that the Chinese state-run publishers entrusted with translating Living History into Mandarin recall the bowdlerised version, and replace it with one faithful to the original. "Unbelievable! I was amazed and outraged that they would censor me again," Mrs Clinton said, adding that her American publishes, Simon & Schuster, was setting up...
