DEAN WANTS TO CLEAN: EYES CHANGES AT DNC, MCAULIFFE

Presidential contender Howard Dean has confided to associates how he desires a fresh course for the Democratic National Committee, including a dramatic change in its leadership, specifically chairman Terry McAuliffe, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Sources close to the early-Democratic frontrunner reveal how Dean has bitterly complained about McAuliffe and the lackluster job he has done for the party.

"We'll make a change there immediately [after the New Hampshire primary]," a top Dean source said of the DNC leadership. "I think it is important, as does Howard, to make a new beginning, cut ties from the past."

"Oil and water, those two," said one Washington observer of Dean and McAuliffe.

"I was watching Terry going quietly mad, almost to the point of steam coming out of his ears, as Dean greatly exceeded the 2-minute time limit at the candidates' dog & pony show last week at the Mayflower Hotel."

It gets even more interesting. Who fed Drudge the report and why? I'm thinking McAuliffe did it himself, with the blessing of the Clintons.

Dean is picking up WAY too much steam. Shock waves are starting to resonate in the DNC. Something has to be done to stop Dean.

I read that Kerry claims to have enough ammo on Dean to sink him in a hurry. If Kerry has that kind of stuff, then the Clintons do as well.

Dean's about to get a mud bath. I wonder if he will get dirty enough that his rabid supporters will abandon him, or if the mud will only endear him to them even more. If the latter is the case, watch for full blown panic to set in and for Her Hillaryness to join the race and "save" the party.

The liberal Democrats I know love Howard Dean. They think the other candidates "might as well be Republicans" because they were all for the Iraq war, and they are all for the Beltway status quo.

Given what's going on in the Dem camp, I wonder if maybe attacking Hillary! too strongly is bad strategy for our side?

I think we should also keep in mind that the Dems enjoy watching us attack each other just as much as we enjoy watching them...

I think Drudge has been had. How exactly is Dean going to remove McAuliffe after New Hampshire? Even if he wins New Hampshire, which should be between him and Kerry because it's a regional state for the both of them.

Even Dean, I think is not stupid enough to think that Democratic Party Rules allow the winner of a primary in a small state to remove the party chair.

Anyone who knows anything about how the DNC works -- knows that there is no way any of the candidates for president could have any impact on the DNC chairmanship -- least of all the Dean Campaign. Particularly in the days following the New Hampshire primary regardless of the result. No one from the Dean Campaign leaked anything to Drudge -- this report is like a National Enquirer headline proclaiming "Martians surprised that George Bush is our leader"
