What Bush really said about Iraq -- excerpt from Bush's SOTU (REMINDER)(w. my major points about it)
White House ^ | January 28, 2003 | President George W. Bush

Posted on 07/15/2003 3:05:37 PM PDT by FairOpinion

Here is the one sentence in Bush's SOTU speech, referring to Iraq's seeking uranium from Africa:

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

And here is the section of the speech dealing with Iraq. This should be reprinted on the front pages. Bush gives a lot of good reasons for the war against Saddam, not as the Democrats would have people believe, that we went to war based on that one tiny shred of information.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/01/20030128-19.html

"A brutal dictator, with a history of reckless aggression, with ties to terrorism, with great potential wealth, will not be permitted to dominate a vital region and threaten the United States. (Applause.)

Twelve years ago, Saddam Hussein faced the prospect of being the last casualty in a war he had started and lost. To spare himself, he agreed to disarm of all weapons of mass destruction. For the next 12 years, he systematically violated that agreement. He pursued chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, even while inspectors were in his country. Nothing to date has restrained him from his pursuit of these weapons -- not economic sanctions, not isolation from the civilized world, not even cruise missile strikes on his military facilities.

Almost three months ago, the United Nations Security Council gave Saddam Hussein his final chance to disarm. He has shown instead utter contempt for the United Nations, and for the opinion of the world. The 108 U.N. inspectors were sent to conduct -- were not sent to conduct a scavenger hunt for hidden materials across a country the size of California. The job of the inspectors is to verify that Iraq's regime is disarming. It is up to Iraq to show exactly where it is hiding its banned weapons, lay those weapons out for the world to see, and destroy them as directed. Nothing like this has happened.

The United Nations concluded in 1999 that Saddam Hussein had biological weapons sufficient to produce over 25,000 liters of anthrax -- enough doses to kill several million people. He hasn't accounted for that material. He's given no evidence that he has destroyed it.

The United Nations concluded that Saddam Hussein had materials sufficient to produce more than 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin -- enough to subject millions of people to death by respiratory failure. He hadn't accounted for that material. He's given no evidence that he has destroyed it.

Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent. In such quantities, these chemical agents could also kill untold thousands. He's not accounted for these materials. He has given no evidence that he has destroyed them.

U.S. intelligence indicates that Saddam Hussein had upwards of 30,000 munitions capable of delivering chemical agents. Inspectors recently turned up 16 of them -- despite Iraq's recent declaration denying their existence. Saddam Hussein has not accounted for the remaining 29,984 of these prohibited munitions. He's given no evidence that he has destroyed them.

From three Iraqi defectors we know that Iraq, in the late 1990s, had several mobile biological weapons labs. These are designed to produce germ warfare agents, and can be moved from place to a place to evade inspectors. Saddam Hussein has not disclosed these facilities. He's given no evidence that he has destroyed them.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in the 1990s that Saddam Hussein had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb. The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production. Saddam Hussein has not credibly explained these activities. He clearly has much to hide.

The dictator of Iraq is not disarming. To the contrary; he is deceiving. From intelligence sources we know, for instance, that thousands of Iraqi security personnel are at work hiding documents and materials from the U.N. inspectors, sanitizing inspection sites and monitoring the inspectors themselves. Iraqi officials accompany the inspectors in order to intimidate witnesses.

Iraq is blocking U-2 surveillance flights requested by the United Nations. Iraqi intelligence officers are posing as the scientists inspectors are supposed to interview. Real scientists have been coached by Iraqi officials on what to say. Intelligence sources indicate that Saddam Hussein has ordered that scientists who cooperate with U.N. inspectors in disarming Iraq will be killed, along with their families.

Year after year, Saddam Hussein has gone to elaborate lengths, spent enormous sums, taken great risks to build and keep weapons of mass destruction. But why? The only possible explanation, the only possible use he could have for those weapons, is to dominate, intimidate, or attack.

With nuclear arms or a full arsenal of chemical and biological weapons, Saddam Hussein could resume his ambitions of conquest in the Middle East and create deadly havoc in that region. And this Congress and the America people must recognize another threat. Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of al Qaeda. Secretly, and without fingerprints, he could provide one of his hidden weapons to terrorists, or help them develop their own.

Before September the 11th, many in the world believed that Saddam Hussein could be contained. But chemical agents, lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained. Imagine those 19 hijackers with other weapons and other plans -- this time armed by Saddam Hussein. It would take one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known. We will do everything in our power to make sure that that day never comes. (Applause.)

Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option. (Applause.)

The dictator who is assembling the world's most dangerous weapons has already used them on whole villages -- leaving thousands of his own citizens dead, blind, or disfigured. Iraqi refugees tell us how forced confessions are obtained -- by torturing children while their parents are made to watch. International human rights groups have catalogued other methods used in the torture chambers of Iraq: electric shock, burning with hot irons, dripping acid on the skin, mutilation with electric drills, cutting out tongues, and rape. If this is not evil, then evil has no meaning. (Applause.)

And tonight I have a message for the brave and oppressed people of Iraq: Your enemy is not surrounding your country -- your enemy is ruling your country. (Applause.) And the day he and his regime are removed from power will be the day of your liberation. (Applause.)

The world has waited 12 years for Iraq to disarm. America will not accept a serious and mounting threat to our country, and our friends and our allies. The United States will ask the U.N. Security Council to convene on February the 5th to consider the facts of Iraq's ongoing defiance of the world. Secretary of State Powell will present information and intelligence about Iraqi's legal -- Iraq's illegal weapons programs, its attempt to hide those weapons from inspectors, and its links to terrorist groups.

We will consult. But let there be no misunderstanding: If Saddam Hussein does not fully disarm, for the safety of our people and for the peace of the world, we will lead a coalition to disarm him. (Applause.) "

On June 11, I posted the following thread regarding the President's address to the UN on 9/12/02. Here's the link [click here].

In that speech, the President layed out the case for overthrowing the Hussein regime. He also listed a series of FIVE demands for Hussein. Had Hussein met those demands, no war would have occurred. In the spirit of your excellent thread, which is to remind people of what the President ACTUALLY said, here are those five demands.

PLEASE NOTICE THAT ONLY ONE OF THOSE DEMANDS HAD TO DO WITH WMD. The media — yes, including the so-called conservative media — keeps repeating the LIE that we attacked Iraq solely because of the WMD issue.

[BEGIN EXERPT FROM BUSH 9/12/02 UN SPEECH]

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately and unconditionally forswear, disclose, and remove or destroy all weapons of mass destruction, long-range missiles, and all related material.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately end all support for terrorism and act to suppress it, as all states are required to do by U.N. Security Council resolutions.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will cease persecution of its civilian population, including Shi'a, Sunnis, Kurds, Turkomans, and others, again as required by Security Council resolutions.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will release or account for all Gulf War personnel whose fate is still unknown. It will return the remains of any who are deceased, return stolen property, accept liability for losses resulting from the invasion of Kuwait, and fully cooperate with international efforts to resolve these issues, as required by Security Council resolutions.

If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately end all illicit trade outside the oil-for-food program. It will accept U.N. administration of funds from that program, to ensure that the money is used fairly and promptly for the benefit of the Iraqi people.

We need to keep this front and center. The media is allowing the Democrats to totally distort and misrepresent what was actually said.I have been in self imposed exile today from the media-are the conservative talk show hosts stepping up to the plate? Any members of Congress stepping up? Hopefully, the White House is getting their ducks in a row.President Bush needs to come out swinging and take this away from the angry villagers with the torches, over at the DNC.

Thanks Wolfstar for adding more perspective to this outright sham that the rats have tried to electronically lynch our president with.

Perception and deception are the points they [the Left] live by and unfortunately the media is complicit in this endeavor.

Truer words were never spoken — or, in this case, written. However, we need not just accept this status quo, or sit back and take the hits. We can fight back through a variety of means:

For those who are so inclined, there are any number of ways to make a difference.

"Our biggest enemy is stupidity, the most formidable of them all. "

--

Stupidity and gullibility of the public is what the Democrats are counting on. They are taking a page from Hitler and Stalin of the "big lie" approach: keep repeating the lies as facts all the time, until it goes into the people's consciousness as fact.

The internet helps to bring the truth to the people, but we need conservative columnists to keep hammering on the truth, and point out the Dems lies.

"...are the conservative talk show hosts stepping up to the plate?"

The ones I've heard here in the L.A. area are doing a weak to poor job. We here on FR actually seem to have come up with more useful info than they have, which is why emailing the talk jock of your choice would be a good idea.

Excellent! I guess it's GMTA. :)

I missed your thread, but this is exactly what we need to do, keep pointing out the truth and hope that some of the columnists lurking (or even posting) on FR will be inspired to write articles based on the truth we are reminding them of.

. We all need to keep this thread handy to go on the offensive against the
attackers/anti-Bush posters on here!

I'll toss some relevant items (some I've posted previously) just to consolidate

The one guy who should be on with all the talking heads 24/7 on this issue is
(please sit down first) Kenneth M. Pollack, a Clinton administration official.
He is the author of The Threatening Storm: The Case for Invading Iraq
It's at this URL at amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375509283/qid=1058313906/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-6916356-9635322

He also wrote an article for The New York Times (a month ago?) that summed up
a lot of his main points that NEED TO BE HAMMERED.
(I heard these summarized on The Laura Ingraham Show)

Main Point #1:
Pollack said that even in the time leading up to Operation Iraqi Freedom,
he attended international arms control meetings with the likes of representives
from China, Russia, France, etc.
THERE WAS NO DOUBT or DISAGREEMENT as to whether Saddam had WMD programs; the only
point of disagreement was "How do we get rid of or neutralize Saddam?"

Main Point #2:
Saddam was keeping his WMD program going as a (in VOA's words) "capability-based"
program.
What this means is that he simply did all he could to poise his country's infrastructure
to make chem/bio WMDs as quickly as possible when needed/desired.
Thus he got permission to build plants for producing pharmaceuticals after
Gulf War I...but of course these could be rapidly re-configured to be cranking
out chem/bio WMDs and loaded into shells for the front.

Now...back to my (VOA's) view. Pollack just makes too much sense. It probably explains why
he's not on TV all the time.
And, even if only half of what Pollack says is true, it means Saddam, Uday,
Quasy, and all the Saddam-ites were just ticking time-bombs.

To paraphrase the old motor-oil commercial:
We were going to have to take 'em out sooner or later.
(and sooner was probably going to be a much cheaper job in the long haul)

Exactly. And this is precisely what Bush said in the SOTU address:

"Before September the 11th, many in the world believed that Saddam Hussein could be contained. But chemical agents, lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained. I agree with what you say, but it is tough to come to grips with the fact that the vote of The Stupids counts as much as the vote of the well-informed, truth-seeking Freepers. I would like to see our side go more and more on the offensive about the causal relationship between ignorance and Democratic voters. LBJ used to actually brag about how ignorant people voted for him. I think it would help our cause to hammer home the idea that Democrats are flat out stupid. It ticks off the hardcore Dems, but may get some independents thinking they don't want to be associated with gullible morons. And the moron vote will always be considerable. I don't really think there is a Republican equivalent to the Rats useful idiots like union members and uneducated minorities.

A concise summary works wonders. The limited attention spans of sheeple tend to drift after 20 words or so . . .

He definitely does. President Bush has been doing a great job.... but "darn good intelligence" just isn't going to cut it in this case. I quickly flipped through the cable shows tonight and the rats are foaming at the mouth everywhere. I just didn't have the stomach to watch any of it. The Republicans aren't even putting anybody good out there to put the rats in check. The DNC thinks it has finally found an issue and with the help of the liberal media they are going to keep it front and center. The republicans need to get some heavy hitters out into the maintream media to get the truth out there.

Like I tell some friends "sitting on the fence":
I wouldn't want doing an archeological dig in Iraq.
Saddam made many of the prime archeological sites "off limits", as he turned them
into mass burial grounds.

I'm not going to be shocked when the first bunch of archeologists die coughing
up their lungs due to anthrax...that one of their spade kicks up in the air
when it strikes a sealed, buried fruit jar full of weaponized anthrax spores.
