President Bush's upcoming meeting with the Urban League, coupled with his snubbing of more-militant black groups, mirrors his outreach to moderate Palestinians while ignoring Yasser Arafat.

In both cases, Mr. Bush hopes to turn nearly hopeless relationships into constructive dialogues with groups not known for their fondness of conservatives.

Most Freepers are delighted every time they run across a conservative or moderate conservative black, particularly one that is articulate, on this site or elsewhere. The most famous conservative black commentators and policy wonks receive almost nothing but universal praise on this site. Surely you know that.

That matter is different from whether or not Bush will get much payoff courting the black vote. I think Bush should because it is right to do so, because they are citizens, irrespective of the payoff. I also think the GOP is blowing it by not financing local black Republicans in local races they are sure to lose, at least for the next few election cycles. That is very short sighted of the GOP. The most effective tool for giving the black community a more balanced message is when they hear it from local black politicians, and hear it again, and again, and again. JMO.

You are confusing the principle with the practical.

Yeah...principles mean nothing.

Spoken like a true neocon.

It all went right over your head. Stop whining, stop name calling, and grow up.

Care to elaborate? The original poster's point was very clear - the values held by many in the black community are much more in line with conservative views than with liberal views. The vast majority of the middle class black families that I've known (and I grew up in a town with, at the time, a nearly 45% black population) hold conservative views about family, education, and religion. They vote Democrat because, like many other liberal voting bases, they buy into the Democrats' caricature of conservatives as racist WASPs who only care about the rich. Illustrating the harm that liberal policies (including, unfortunately, many enacted or propped up by our current "conservative" President") have done to the black community is a sound strategy.

I quess I do know alittle more than you I, can spell wasting.

You can't, however, spell (or at least use in the correct context) "what" (what's), "they're" (their), "woman" (women), "fathers" (father's), or "guess" (quess). The next time you decide to play the grammar card in lieu of an actual argument, you may want to make sure that, at the very least, there isn't a misspelled word and two other grammatical errors in the sentence you're using when you play it.

No, you are not. The Black Americans who turn to President Bush and the Republican Party are those who learn that success goes to those who work for it and not for those who sit on their butts and wait for it to be handed to them.

The RATS will always get the votes of the minorities who expect the free ride. They are the ones the "workers" leave behind in the ghetto when they move out and up.
