Iranian Alert -- July 30, 2003 -- LIVE THREAD PING LIST
The Iranian Student Movement Up To The Minute Reports ^ | 7.30.2003 | DoctorZin

Posted on 07/30/2003 12:10:14 AM PDT by DoctorZIn

The regime is working hard to keep the news about the protest movment in Iran from being reported.

From jamming satellite broadcasts, to prohibiting news reporters from covering any demonstrations to shutting down all cell phones and even hiring foreign security to control the population, the regime is doing everything in its power to keep the popular movement from expressing its demand for an end of the regime.

These efforts by the regime, while successful in the short term, do not resolve the fundamental reasons why this regime is crumbling from within.

Iran is a country ready for a regime change. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a nation. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary.

Please continue to join us here, post your news stories and comments to this thread.

Thanks for all the help.

US 'more ferocious' than Saddam, Iran leader says

ABC 7.30.2003

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told thousands of Islamist militants on Wednesday that the United States was "a more ferocious wolf than Saddam's regime".

"The United States, despite its pretence of saving the Iraqi people, is a more ferocious wolf than Saddam's regime," state television quoted Khamenei as saying.

"Hateful US action in different areas, particularly Iraq, can no longer deceive public opinion, as every day the world's hatred of the United States increases.

"Unacceptable pressure, installing a foreign ruler, demanding resources (from Iraq), anarchy ... have exposed the true brand of human rights and democracy offered by the United States to the people of the Middle East," he said.

Denouncing what he called a US propaganda campaign against Iran, Khamenei said "the United States, by way of propaganda and media complexes ... pretends their opposition to Islam stems from the call for holy war, terrorism and hate ... but it's a big lie, because Islam is exonerated from all such accusations.

"The source of differences between the United States and the Islamic republic is the Islamic regime's wish to be independent and govern according to the will of the Iranian populace and not according to the will of oppressors," he said.

"The new Iranian generation's mastery of modern science fired our enemy's anger, and to disguise it, he resorted to propaganda and uproar (in the media) and wrongly accuses Iran of seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction."

The international community, suspicious that Tehran has a secret weapons program, is pressing it to sign an additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty allowing the International Atomic Energy Agency to carry out no-notice inspections of the country's installations.

I just posted an interesting aticle on Arab reaction to the new Iraqi council. It's not about Iran, but it shows what we are up against in the Arab world.

SUM OF ARAB FEARS: Hypocritical Arab reaction to the new Iraqi Governing Council.

Iran's Role in Iraq ''Not Always Helpful'' - UK Envoy

July 30, 2003
Reuters
MSNBC News

TEHRAN -— Britain's outgoing envoy to Iraq John Sawers said on Wednesday neighbouring Iran's role in Iraq had ''not always been helpful'' since a U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein's government.

Using more diplomatic language than that employed by U.S. officials who have accused Iran of stirring up anti-U.S. sentiment in Iraq, Sawers said Iran must respect Iraq's territorial integrity.

''Of course Iran has friends, including political friends in Iraq, but there are limits to what will contribute to promoting stability in the country and there are cases where we think these limits are not being respected,'' Sawers told a news conference during a visit to Iran.

He said Iran's role had ''not always been helpful'' but declined to elaborate, saying only that he had raised the issue during ''constructive'' meetings with senior Iranian foreign and intelligence ministry officials.

''Iran has a legitimate interest in what happens in Iraq and we in the coalition want Iran to use its influence'' to promote stability in Iraq, he said.

U.S. officials have accused Tehran of sending armed security agents into the country, funding Shi'ite Muslim parties opposed to U.S.-led occupation of Iraq and of moving some border posts into Iraqi territory.

Iran has denied all the accusations and has called for a rapid withdrawal of U.S.-led troops from Iraq.

Sawers has just ended a three-month stint as Britain's special representative to Iraq and was visiting Iran on his way back to London, which sent troops to join the invasion.

He said Iranian officials had raised with him the fate of two Iranian documentary film makers who were arrested by U.S. forces in Iraq three weeks ago. He said Saeed Abutaleb and Soheil Karimi had been arrested while ''filming the activities of coalition forces.''

''They have been detained and questioned and I expect they will be released when that process has been completed,'' he said.

Some 162 Iranian parliamentarians wrote to President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday, calling on him to secure the release of the film makers, who were arrested on July 1.

Bush Calls for World Response to Iran Nuclear Aims

July 30, 2003
Reuters
Reuters.com

WASHINGTON -- President Bush on Wednesday urged the international community, especially Europe, to join the United States in a concerted effort to discourage Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

"I believe the best way to deal with the Iranians at this point in time is for others to join us in a clear declaration that the development of a nuclear weapon is not in their interests," Bush said at a news conference.

"I really believe that we can solve this issue peacefully, but this is an issue that's going to require a concerted effort by nations around the world to work with the United States, particularly in Europe, to speak clearly to the Iranian administration," Bush said.

US confirms Iran has deployed missile capable or reaching Israel, Russia

WorldTribune, BACKGROUNDER:
Compiled by Bill Gertz 7.30.2003

U.S. officials have confirmed claims by Iran that its military has deployed the new Shihab-3 long-range missile with the Islamic shock troops for the first time.

Iran's official Voice of the Islamic Republic Radio reported July 20 that the missiles were turned over to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). Also supplied were Su-25 jet fighters and transport and attack helicopters.

The deployment represents a major advance in Iran's power projection since the country previously had only short-range missiles similar to 180-mile Scuds.

The Shihab-3 ballistic missile (Shihab in Farsi means meteor shooting star) is a road mobile medium-range missile with a range of up to 930 miles. It is believed capable of carrying a 2,200-pound warhead. The missile is based on the design of the North Korean Nodong missile.

Bush: We Stand on the Side of Those Who are Desperate for Freedom in Iran

July 30, 2003
The U.S. Department of State
Washington File

President Bush, in a July 30 press conference in the White House Rose Garden, said that Iran's development of nuclear weapons is "not in their interests," and that concerted international effort is needed to dissuade Iran from its nuclear weapons program.

In response to a reporter's question about "a march to war in Iran," Bush warned that "all options remain on the table," but that he believed a peaceful solution was possible.

"I believe that the best way to deal with the Iranians at this point in time is to convince others to join us in a clear declaration that the development of nuclear weapons is not in their interests," Bush said.

"We're making progress there. I really believe that we can solve this peacefully, but this is an issue that's going to require a concerted effort by nations around the world to work with the United States, particularly in Europe, to speak clearly to the Iranian administration," he said.

Bush also said that he believes a free Iraq will have an affect upon the lives of Iranians. "The people of Iran are interested in freedom, and we stand by their side. We stand on the side of those who are desperate for freedom in Iran," Bush said. "We understand their frustrations in living in a society that is totalitarian in nature."

Bush noted that Iran has admitted to holding Al Qaeda members, and urged Iran to respond to the requests of neighboring countries to turn the Al Qaeda members over to them. "It would be very helpful for the Iranians to make that decision," Bush said.

Following is an excerpt from President Bush's July 30 press conference in the White House Rose Garden:

(begin excerpt)

Q: I wanted to ask you about Iran, one of your other countries in the axis of evil. One of the things we learned from that march to war is that when you start warning countries, they better pay attention. Are we now in the early stages of a march to war in Iran? Or are they more like in the category of North Korea?

THE PRESIDENT: No, I -- look, Hutch, I remember right after Iraq the first thing that happened out of -- out of some writers' pens was that, oh, no, they're getting ready to attack either Syria or Iran. You know, the march to war is just a campaign that's just going to march everywhere.

I -- all options remain on the table. I believe that the best way to deal with the Iranians at this point in time is to convince others to join us in a clear declaration that the development of a nuclear weapon is not in their interests. I believe a free Iraq will affect the lives of Iranians. I want to thank the Diaspora here in the United States, particularly in L.A. -- which reminds me, my last question is going to Ed. And -- so you can prepare for it, Ed. We've got a lot of our fellow citizens who are in e-mail contact, phone contact with people who live throughout Iran. And I want to thank them for that.

Interestingly enough, there's a TV station that I think has been -- people have read about that is broadcast out of L.A. by one of our citizens. He's -- he or she has footed the bill. It's widely watched. The people of Iran are interested in freedom, and we stand by their side. We stand on the side of those who are desperate for freedom in Iran. We understand their frustrations in living in a society that is totalitarian in nature. And now is the time for the world to come together, Ron, to send a clear message.

And so I spent time with Prime Minister Berlusconi on the ranch, and I talked to him about the need for the EU to send a very clear message, along with the United States. As you know -- some of you have been on the trips with me to Russia, and you remember me talking with my friend Vladimir Putin about the need to be mindful of the Iranians' desire to have nuclear weapons. We're making progress there. I really believe that we can solve this peacefully, but this is an issue that's going to require a concerted effort by nations around the world to work with the United States, particularly in Europe, to speak clearly to the Iranian administration.

The other thing that's interesting about Iran is that they do have Al Qaeda. They've admitted they got Al Qaeda. Now, that's positive, that the Al Qaeda is not talking to anybody. I mean, I would rather them be held somewhere other than moving around, plotting and planning. And I would just hope the Iranians would listen to the request of countries in their neighborhood to turn them over. In other words, some of the countries of origin for these Al Qaeda operatives have asked for those Al Qaeda detainees to be sent back to the country of origin. It would be very helpful for the Iranians to make that decision.

"He said Iranian officials had raised with him the fate of two Iranian documentary film makers who were arrested by U.S. forces in Iraq..."

Their fate? Well, we know they won't be treated like U.S. film makers arrested by Iranian forces.
That's For Sure!

Hahaha. I'm a regular here.
I noticed usually when you "post", it's with a "Bump" or "thanks for the ping".

This time you didn't write anything.
That's why I said "You're slipping"

Just kidding. Although I have wondered about you.

Sometimes I "mark" the thread (to remind myself where I read to, or to be able to find a thread easier later on)
It's also easier than typing...btrl (bump to read later)

nothing to wonder about here
