RACINE, Wis. -- A Racine woman is sentenced to nine months in jail for fatally stabbing her newborn as she gave birth at home.

Racine County Circuit Judge Wayne Marik sentenced Sandra Joncas, 44, following a hearing that lasted most of the day.

Joncas earlier pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and failing to report the death of a child in an agreement with prosecutors.

Joncas was formerly known as Melnik until her divorce following the crime.

The woman is accused of stabbing her baby as she gave birth in her home on April 22, 2001, then tossing the body in a garbage bag.

The baby had stab wounds to the head and abdomen. Joncas had stab wounds to her genitals.

Joncas had faced up to 47 years in prison and 23 years of extended supervision.

This is really sick but in this abortion condoning culture I'm surprised she got any time at all. Sentences are usually reduced so what does she end up with in the end, a couple of months? So sorry for you little baby that you had to be born to such a fiend. My goodness, why couldn't she give the poor little guy up for adoption?!!!!? It's better to kill them than to let someone else have them. Like another poster said, GOD can't be smiling at the way we are going in this country.

Nine months? Nine MONTHS? I'd like to believe this is a mistake not caught by an imperfect editor. Sadly, it's more likely a crime ignored by a immoral judge. Nine months is an insult to life itself.

I can vividly remember my feelings when I first saw my oldest son seconds after he was born. How even the thought of harming such a precious being could cross a woman's mind is beyond me.

I've said it before, and here it is again; in our society, children have become disposable. We've had many child murders, by the mother or her boyfriend, in this area, and they receive very light sentences.

Unfortunately, I see no difference in what David Westerfield did, than any mother killing her child--murder is murder.

The thing that pi$$es me off is that if I were her next door neighbor and went over and killed her daughter, I'd be looking at 25 years to life!

Not to mention, if I killed the family dog or cat in cold blood, Id prolly get at least 3 years.
