Franken was on during the Chase, Akroyd, Radner, Beloushi years.

The only really funny SNL people were: Ackroyd, Curtin, Morris, Radner, Murphy, Lovitz, Hartman and of course Fr Guido Sarducci.

LOL. I recall the time Father Quido was talking about his trip to the Holy Land. Seems a fellow offerred to sell him the original menu to the Lord's Supper. Father Quido said, "He wanted $500, but I "presbyteried" him down to $250".

Two, among many, other classics were of him selling "Pope" buttons prior to the Pope visiting the U.S. and find the "Pope" in the pizza contest. He was also the source via Chicago of the Pepsi-Pepsi-Cheezeburger-Cheezeburger.... bit.

I really miss getting the inside "scoup" from Salvaltoria Romana the Vatican Newspaper.

He's exactly as funny as Chris Rock and Bill Maher added together and divided by 0.

I can only agree with Gilda Radner and Phil Hartman. I would also add Bill Murray and Martin Short, who is more of an SCTV guy anyway (and SCTV was a superior show, by far.

Franken could ONLY have been with the talented ones just before they all left.....I watched during those years...I don't remember Franken being WITH the funny ones.

Always wondered what Lorne Greene saw in Big Creepy Al.

Lorne Greene was the star of Bonanza, Battle Star Galactica and Alpo commercials. Lorne Michael was SNL's executive producer, but I'm sorry I have no idea what Lorne saw in Fat Al either.

The only thing of his I thought was funny was when he was a "medical correspondent" for Weekend Update, and he was doing a story on then President' Reagan's upcoming prostate surgery.

Ah, the irony of calling Rush a "big fat idiot".

One SNL skit/newscast has stuck with me... After the ''me decade'' (the 70's) he declared the 80's the ''Al Franken decade''. It could have been funny if he didn't actually believe it.

This is late, but you're right about SCTV. The funniest show ever. SNL is not even close.

I remember one skecth I found funny during the first Gulf War, where he was a network reporter out in the desert with some big backpack satellite uplink thing with a dish mounted on a helmet. As the Weekend update people keep going back to him, he becomes more and more overcome by the heat and eventually passes out with a vulture pecking at his head.

I don't know why, but his very deadpan delivery was very funny to me.
