FRIEDMAN FOR ARNOLD:
Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman of Stanford University's Hoover Institution told HUMAN EVENTS' John Gizzi on August 21 that he would be endorsing Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor of California. "My impression is that he is fundamentally a small- government libertarian, although that is belied to some extent by the proposition he got through last year [providing tax dollars for after-school programs]," said Friedman. He added that he and wife Rose were "favorably impressed" with Schwarzenegger when they met over dinner and discussed the free market more than twenty years ago.
*NO NEW TAXES? When asked about Schwarzenegger's refusal to flatly rule out raising taxes, Friedman said "it's foolish for anyone to rule out anything under any circumstances. I didn't trust [the elder] George Bush when he said 'no more taxes' in 1988." But Friedman added that Schwarzenegger "should not have said education should not be on the table" when he discussed budget cutting. Asked about the influence of Schwarzenegger adviser Warren Buffett (who opposes tax cuts and most of the things Friedman stands for), the economist responded that Schwarzenegger was "a tough individual who won't be influenced by Mr. Buffett." Friedman also disputed the assertion that Buffett disagreed with him on everything, quipping: "I stand for making money and at least he's done that!"

Mr. Friedman has not let age and experience interfere with his eternal optimism that this latest politician will meet his low-tax expectations.

Milton Friedman would not allow politics to dictate his support of a particular candidate. From the time that I heard Arnold was a follower of Friedman's, I hoped this economic giant would lend his support and expertise, and it appears that he has done so. Bravo, Mr. Friedman!

Bump for Arnold!!!

I wonder why Friedman thinks Schwarzenegger is "a tough individual who won't be influenced by Mr. Buffett," since Schwarzenegger hired (and has not yet fired) Buffett.

Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman of Stanford University's Hoover Institution Anybody who wins a Nobel prize, and spends all his time on a college campus, is so far out of touch with real working men and women, its not even funny.
Arnold and elitist crew, just what California doesn't need.
If your a Republican, Tom McClintock is the only person with a real plan for the common man. Vote for Cruz or Arnold, and the special interest highway just gets wider.

Maybe I'm going to have to re-evaluate. Friedman is the one guy I trust. If he were running, I'd move back to my native homeland just to lend him my support. So, while I am still in the McClintock camp, this is the first good argument I've seen for Ahnold so far.

One of America's greatest pro-capitalist economics minds supports Arnold now? Oh, man, the RINO-hating national socialists on FR are going to really hate Arnold now!

Without someone like Milton, Regan probably would not have been president, and the GOP would probably be opposed to cutting taxes.

I think Ted Rall gets a lot of his column ideas and "facts" from the FR paleos.

Anybody who wins a Nobel prize, and spends all his time on a college campus, is so far out of touch with real working men and women, its not even funny. As opposed to someone who has spent almost all his adult life at the state capitol in Sacramento? McClintock, as fine a legislator as he may be, has never run a business, met a payroll, driven a cement truck or designed and written computer programs.
Frankly, after seeing the ordinary people who waddle out of Wal-Mart with Hillary's book, I wonder if the sainted "real working men and women" aren't out of touch with their own roots.

If Milton Friedman is for Schwarzenegger so am I. I think Mr. Friedman is the smartest man alive.
To: KurtChicago
Friedman says there's "no such thing as a free lunch," but he seems to think that Schwarzenegger will bring the "free lunch" fiscal conservatives like he are seeking. I predict it won't happen once Governor Schwarzenegger is inaugurated. It will be the same-ol' same-ol' with a little libertarian rhetoric to please Friedman and the other nominal Republicans.
