WHAT ABOUT SNACKS...

you can just change your definition of snack..

It's all in your head, and thats where it belongs. We have this notion that something has to be naughty to be good! We perceive anything usually used in a different context and readily available to be blasé, or boring.

I have been skirting, and circling this issue in countless other venues, and here on FR for a long time.. Your mind craves satisfaction, something to change the subject and wake up the senses!

Your senses need a drastic change,. a jump start to wake them up, so they can tell the brain that something is happening to pay attention. You need, SPICE, BURN, FREEZE, CRUNCH, GOOEY, STICKY, SOUR, and yes SWEET!

Dips that are piping HOT as H%LL, frozen, and BITTER lime juice, cheap low carb baked wheat thins, with Habañero, or Jalapeño cheese dip, ..slowly eating only a few of these thingys will satisfy your hunger because they get the glands, and taste buds jumping. Use your imagination.. Strips of cold roast in one of those dips with burn you mouth for a moment and cause you to drink a gallon of ice water.. GOOD!  That'll fill you up! A touch of lemon on the tip of you tongue will pucker you up as well! Get the picture??

Lets see if you can post some of your own ideas!.. waiting.. tapping my fingers... looking at my watch.... whistling..... ZZZZzzz

I'm on day two of Atkins, done right for the first time ever.

It is the weirdest feeling.

Two of my favorite snacks:

Antyime snack: Take 1/2 cup 1% fat cottage cheese, and stir in 2 teaspoons Swiss Miss Sugar Free Hot Cocoa mix.

Bed-time snack, or breakfast: A serving of FiberOne cereal with a carton of fat free, sugar free yogurt stirred in.

DH had a piece today and was licking his fingers afterwards. (I had ordered it medium, instead of hot!)

I make my own turkey sausage for a morning snack. Lots of red pepper, sage, garlic, thyme and a little nutmeg. A turkey pattie with a dollop of natural applesauce is a great morning snack. Low fat and low carb but more than satisfying.

Good evening carlo. Do you know anything about this product? (WheyLow sugar substitute)

It is supposed to have the same properties as sugar. I'm hoping to use it in homemade locarb ice cream.

One of my favorites.........raw jicama spears and cucumber sticks drizzled with fresh lime juice and sprinkled with chile powder. Crunch, spice and flavor! And easy.

Okay, I'll take your challenge. Here is a "snack" I've had several times over this past summer:

I call them "jalapeno poppers" and they are hot if you aren't used to them. But I like hot. And they make me drink lots of water. Also, the capsaicin in the hot peppers help "speed up" your metabolism and has other positive effects on your body. Believe it or not, hot peppers like jalapenos are great for your digestive system.

Best of all - no carbs.

Good idea to have spicy hot snacks followed by much water. Multo bene!

I try to follow the Zone diet: very little starch, nothing with wheat, not even many potatoes. Only meat, fish, fruits, veggies. I sneak in some rye krisp. So boring. Thank God for Tobasco sauce, a staple at my house.

Here's a recipe I copied from the Washington Post ..have not tried it yet, but it does sound yummy and fits nicely into the Zone guidlines. You think it has possibilities?

Rib-eye with Plum Sauce

For the rib-eye steaks:

3 garlic cloves -- peeled
2 plums, pitted -- and cut up
3 tablespoons bottled steak sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup red vermouth
4 boneless rib-eye steaks, -- 6 oz each

For the plum compote:

1 small onion -- finely chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 plums, pitted -- and cubed
1 tablespoon lime juice
2 teaspoons chopped fresh ginger
1 tablespoon bottled mango chutney
1/4 cup apple juice
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves -- chopped

Prepare a charcoal fire.

For the rib-eye steaks, puree, in a blender or food processor, the garlic, plums, steak sauce, olive oil and vermouth. Pour over the steaks, cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes. (The beef can marinate for up to 3 hours.)
For the plum compote, cook the onion in the oil in a small saucepan over low heat until softened, about 5 to 6 minutes. Combine the plums, lime juice, ginger, chutney, apple juice, cilantro and onion mixture in a small mixing bowl; set aside. When the coals are white-hot, grill the marinated steaks for about 6 minutes on each side for medium-rare meat, or longer if desired.
Transfer the steaks to a platter and spoon the fruit compote over each steak.
Note: The same amount of chicken broth or apple juice may be substituted for the vermouth. (Chicken broth better for Zone dieters than that sweet stuff.)
Per serving: 493 calories, 23 gm carbohydrates, 84 mg cholesterol, 285 mg sodium, 40 gm protein, 25 gm fat, 6 gm saturated fat

Snacks? You want snacks? A snack you'll get!RJayne beat me to it with Oven Cheese Crisps, but the one I do is in the m'wave. I don't know if it originated with Atkins, but South Beach does it with lo-fat cheese.

Use the cheese you wish, and put about 1/4 cup on an oiled microwavable plate and nuke for 45 seconds to 1 minute or more. It will melt, bubble and then firm up. Let it get just a little tan color to it. When it cools, it will be crisp.(Factor in the power of your m'wave and the amount or kind of cheese you use.)

2% cheddar shreds take about 1 1/2minutes in my m'wave, while non-fat takes about a minute. You can make a large chip, or little round ones.


Here is a link to a more descriptive recipe. I don't bother with all the paper, I just spray the dish with Pam and nuke away.

For cocktail sauce, I use Estee brand Ketchup (no added sugar). It is usually found with Diabetic foods in the stores, here in NJ.

I simply mix some hot horseradish and Worcestershire sauce in it. Wanna get it real hot? Go for the tabasco!

I am stuck on sugar free jell-O with canned whipped low fat topping. (No carbs in it)

My favorite meal is Halibut Steak. I have been buying the frozen ones at Costco.

I mix Saffola Mayonaise with some Dijon mustard then coat the Halibut. I then sprinkle all over it with Parmesan Cheese and some Dill Weed.

Melt some butter in a glass baking dish put the Halibut in and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Yum! Yum!

For the very first time in my life I find I should lose weight. Apparently I'm not burning enough calories. So I've decided to take up the hobby of pushing cars uphill.

That way I don't have to diet, right?

Been doing the quick, cheap and fast dinners. Took some cleaned shrimp added a few spoons of oilve oil and some old bay spice. Stirred the oil and old bay up and then tossed the shrimp in to marinate for a few hours .

Grilled and served up with a "cold" pasta salad and some sun tea.........garlic bread and yellow doll watermelon optional !

My mind craves chok-lit!! My tastebuds crave chok-lit!! LOL!!! And since I'm one of the fortunate ones (please don't hate me for it. *giggle*) who has a high metabolism, I satisfy those cravings with......chok-lit!

I pretty well eat a good balanced diet but when it comes to snacks....... Nobody's perfect. :-)

Do you have a good BBQ sauce recipe--also ranch dressing?

Here's a good one for chicken. My family has loved this dish for years and little did I know--it is also low carb.

8 chicken breasts
3-4 oz. dried beef
8 slices bacon
1 cup sour cream
1 can cream of mushroom soup

Divide dried beef into 8 portions. Roll a chicken breast around each portion and wrap a slice of bacon around the chicken breast. Place into a 9 x 13 baking pan. Mix sour cream and mushroom soup together and spread on top of chicken. Sprinkle all with parsley or paprika for color. Bake uncovered at 350º for about 1 hour. This is easy to prepare for a large crowd. The "gravy" is excellent over rice for your carb eating family members. Delicious left over and freezes well. A good winter time selection.
