Miss UNC-Pembroke must give up her title until assault charges against her are resolved, university officials said.

Aja Locklear, 19, was charged with simple assault, assault with a deadly weapon and damage to real property over the weekend, said Scott Bigelow, spokesman for the university.

Platform - Domestic Violence: Breaking the Cycle

" I want to help the students, faculty and the Pembroke community
become more aware of the cycles of violence through outreach programs."

During my reign, I would like to establish "A New Way to Grow" Foundation. Ideally, this organization will address issues of Domestic Violence using educational programs among these are, distingushed speakers, videos, fundraisers, and educational courses such as self-defense.

Education
Major course of study at UNCP: Business Management
Minor course of study at UNCP: Substance Abuse

Goal for the Future:
I have hopes of becoming an ambassador and leader in the world of business and technology.
I plan to continue my education. I want to obtain an MBA and a PhD.

From what I hear, they are like those Haliwa girls around Hollister [up near Medoc Mountain, near the VA border & Lake Gaston].
When I was single and used to go out to bars a lot, you'd see some of them around.

I once saw a guy get beat like a rented mule by two of 'em at once, outside a club. Unreal!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (an unnecessary admonition on this forum!), but I believe UNC-Pembroke is the only state-supported "historically Native American") college in the U.S. It was founded specifically as an "Indian" school, just as Winston-Salem State, North Carolina Central, and other state colleges were founded as "black" colleges. They are now all nominally integrated (significantly so in the case of some graduate programs, as NCCU's law school).

For readers who don't know, Pembroke is located in Robeson County, which has a large concentration of the controversial Lumbee Tribe (controversial in terms of their origins, their "legitamacy" as a bona fide tribe deserving a seperate identity, and even with regard to their ethnic "purity" -- some Lumbees have blue eyes).

When you rope yourself a filly like this, you've got a right to be proud!

I think the prior Miss NC had her crown revoked as well. Something about her ex-boyfriend had pictures of her in the buff.

It's definitely the only "historically Native American" college in NC, but I think there are others out west.

Yep, it was Rebekah Revels. I think she was also from this area.

The woman in this story only ran for Miss NC; she was Miss University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

I think I'd better get a 2nd cup of coffee before posting anything else. I wonder what I said in that gay marriage thread?

For those who may not know, Robeson County is where they surrounded a KKK rally with pickup trucks and shotguns and ran the Klan out. That was in the late 50's/early 60's.

Used to live in that area (Little burg called Littleton) back in the Mid 80's, and I can honestly say some of my best popcorn moments were watching the women kick the living cr*p out of a boyfriend/Husband because he stayed at the bar too long or gave another woman "That look" :) Sometimes I miss the 80's, LOL.
