OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Mississippi is ending its search for a new on-field mascot, citing poor participation in its online poll and lack of consensus for either proposed mascot.
Of the approximately 40,000 Ole Miss fans who were qualified to vote, some 2,400 participated in the poll, preferring Rebel Bruiser over Rowdy Rebel by a margin of 2,080 to 344.
"It is clear from the responses received and from general public discussion that there is no community support for either of the proposed mascots," said Chancellor Robert Khayat. "Therefore, the matter is closed."
Athletics Director Pete Boone agreed.
"Based on the number of votes, declining participation and opinions gathered from several sources, continuing the polling makes very little sense," Boone said.
"There is not a clear mandate from our students or fans to accept either of the images," he said. "Therefore, I cannot recommend either mascot to represent Ole Miss Athletics."
Although there will be no on-field mascot, the University will continue to license merchandise bearing the Colonel Rebel logo.
"More important to the teams than any mascot is the support of our Ole Miss family," Boone said.
"I regret that this has become such a divisive issue," he said. "It is now time to move forward."
Said Khayat, "This is Homecoming Weekend, and we want all Ole Miss people to enjoy the weekend without being distracted by this issue."

Does this mean Col. Reb stays?
Just another stupid question from me today.
I've been trying to avoid these, but, sheesh, I must just be having a low IQ day. I'm glad they didn't got with that totally homo mascot, as someone correctly described it.
Talk about laughingstock, ohmigod, even the guys at the gay bars watching college football would have been laughing at that one!

Ah yes Ole Miss' way of saying accept the ruling of the dictatorship. Now gay hitched upped Ole Miss fans in red sweater vests can continue to bend over and take it from the administration.

When I was at Ole Miss that was the gayest thing about Ole Miss. The red sweater vest fans with their official UM hats, khaki shorts pulled up to their armpits, as they yet again stand there in awe while the Rebels are smeared by Auburn and Alabama on the football field. And if you ever criticized the team, they would yell "come on man, support the team."
As long as Cutcliffe and Boone are there Ole Miss will never be better than 6-5 or 7-4 in a good year.

The only thing missing from Bruiser Brute's outfit is a purple triangle.

He lost a lot of my respect when he didn't fire Cut after the Kentucky fiasco, and he's lost way more with this mascot idiocy.
Very difficult--nigh impossible--to imagine it happening at this point, but perhaps the worst thing that could happen to Ole Miss football right now would be a 9-3 or 10-2 season. That would almost certainly get Cutcliffe another extension and doom us for the next many years.

I can't say a friggin' thing. My Bulldogs are 1-4 with losses to Houston and Tulane.
