Twenty-four years after farm invasions began in Zimbabwe it was time for me to go back to my farm again and have a look. Surely 24 years later, there would be something to see to support the legend that what happened on commercial farms was productive and beneficial to the people and the country. ... So what did I see when I went back to my farm last week? I did not see a thriving, productive farm. I saw houses, lots of houses, built on the most fertile fields, the lushest pastures and the livestock handling pens. ...

-Mining workers and villagers near the Bikita Minerals lithium mine in Zimbabwe accuse the government and Chinese mining company Sinomine Resource Group of sidelining environmental and social standards in the scramble for lithium. -After a series of displacements, spills, labor abuses, a death, and little action by authorities, locals and experts accuse the government of failing to enforce its own laws and letting bad mining practices run loose. -According to industry experts, in theory, Chinese investments come with an increasingly robust set of ESG standards, but in practice these aren’t followed if host countries “shy away” from making such demands...

Buckle up, because Zimbabwe’s going for a wild ride down Gold Lane, ditching the US dollar like it’s out of fashion. Under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime, this southern African gem is shaking up its monetary system yet again. This time, they’re pulling a bold move by introducing a new gold-backed currency.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe’s powerful vice president said the government will block a university scholarship for young LGBTQ+ people, a move that human rights groups described Friday as a perpetuation of the African country’s homophobic practices. The state university scholarship for people between the ages of 18 and 35 is sponsored by GALZ, a membership organization for LGBTQ+ people in Zimbabwe. The association started offering it in 2018 without incident. But a recent online advertisement inviting applications attracted a harsh response from Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, a self-proclaimed devout Catholic and former army commander. In a strongly worded statement...

Zimbabwe's Cabinet decision to abolish the death penalty, announced on Wednesday, is being hailed by human rights advocates, but not all Zimbabweans are in favor of the move. Amnesty International — one of the rights groups which has pushed for the abolition of capital punishment in Zimbabwe — welcomed the announcement this week by Harare. "Zimbabwe has taken the right step towards ending this abhorrent and inhuman form of punishment that has no place in today's justice system," said Roselina Muzerengi, campaigns coordinator at Amnesty International in Zimbabwe. "Now that the Cabinet has given its nod, Parliament must ensure the...

Drought in Hwange national park was the cause of most of the deaths, and wildlife experts fear the climate crisis could make such events look normal One of the 160 elephants that died in late 2023 in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park as drought hit the region. Photograph: Courtesy of Bhejane Trust At least 160 elephants have died as drought conditions hit Zimbabwe, and with hot, dry weather likely to continue, conservationists fear there could be more deaths to come. The elephants died between August and December last year in the 14,651 sq km Hwange national park, which is home to...

Man, this is great stuff, I don't care what race you are. Miss Universe Zimbabwe — that's in Africa, y'all — is a white woman, and the internet is not happy. Well, at least the half of the internet that's always crying about something. They're mad. That's Zimbabwe native Brooke Bruk-Jackson, and while she doesn't look the part, she is now the representative for Zimbabwe in this year's Miss Universe competition. She's beautiful and so were all the other candidates, but what's really got the internet upset is the fact that she's white. Because apparently you can't be white and...

What is the difference between South African politician Julius Malema, who led chants of "Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer" during a recent rally of the Economic Freedom Fighters, the political organization that he chairs, and U.S. Air Force general C.Q. Brown, nominated as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, whose goal as CJCS isn't to increase the combat capability of the Armed Forces, but to ensure that white male officers become a minority at the Pentagon? Same clown, different uniform. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the secretary of defense used to be...

Biden is surrendering American power. The erosion of American power caused by Biden's policies is irreversible. Even if Trump wins the America he will receive will be as powerful as Zimbabwe By Ezequiel Doiny Harvard Belfer Center reports China is winning the economic race with the US. This represents a victory of tyranny over freedom. Inaction has its price. Truman's inaction against China during the Korean war made the World a much more dangerous place since China assisted both Pakistan and North Korea to obtain nuclear weapons; China consolidated its takeover of Tibet causing much suffering. Lives could have been...

Zimbabwe has banned all lithium exports after the government said it was losing 1.7 billion euros from exporting it as a raw mineral and not processing it into batteries in-country. Lithium is so valuable as a component of electronic batteries - mostly for cars mobile phones and computers - that it’s known as “white gold.” The price has gone up by 1,100 percent in the past two years alone. Zimbabwe has the largest amount of the mineral in Africa and has enough of it to supply a fifth of the world’s needs, the government says. Whilst it’s on track to...

I was in 6th grade in 1976 during America’s Bicentennial. I played Abraham Lincoln in the school’s celebration, my family parked next to the Pentagon to watch the fireworks above DC and our class visited the newly opened Air and Space Museum. And of course, TV commercials were chock-full of patriotic themes from morning until stations signed off with the national anthem. It was a good time to be an American. Looking back, I lived in a cocoon of security that comes with knowing that the world was as it was supposed to be as if God had our backs....

Zimbabwe's central bank will start selling gold coins later this month to try and tame inflation by providing a store of value to the country's plunging currency and giving the population an alternative to the U.S. dollar. The one troy ounce 22-carat gold coin will be called 'Mosi-Oa-Tunya' and will be available starting July 25. The name means "Smoke that Thunders," referencing Victoria falls. "Each coin will have a serial number," Zimbabwe's central bank said in a press release. "Upon purchase, the buyer shall take physical possession of the coin and be issued with a Bearer Ownership Certificate. The buyer...

[In] “Ariel Phenomenon,” director Randall Nickerson looks at one of the most famous cases of the second type involving both craft and occupants: the 1994 mass sighting at the Ariel School in Zimbabwe, Africa. It is a portrayal of a potentially “alien” event, told from a decidedly human angle, including the powerful feelings such an event often leaves behind in those touched by the experience. *snip* Nickerson spends a significant amount of the film’s 100+ minute run time exploring the negative side of the Ariel School experience for many of the witnesses, particularly feelings of trauma. This includes students who...

Massive flocks of the red-billed quelea bird — a notorious African crop pest — have decimated grain harvests across farms in western Zimbabwe in recent weeks, causing fears of a local food shortage in the near future, the online newspaper New Zimbabwe reported Monday. “Farmers in Umguza and Bubi farming areas in Matebeleland North province are struggling to contain a massive outbreak of quelea birds which are feasting on their crops, mainly small grains,” the publication reported on May 16. “As a result of the invasion, the farmers, say they are now spending most of their time clanging metal objects...
